      • Making Sense of Loss and Belongingness: Korean Transracial Adoptees' Journey from Europe to Korea

Favre, Beatrice,Park, Hye Jun Korean Association of Child Studies 2016 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.1 No.1

From 1953 to 2015, approximately 200,000 children born in Korea were adopted into foreign countries. Many studies have focused on Korean adoptees growing up in the US, as the majority of these children were adopted by American families. In comparison, research on Korean transracial adoptees raised in European countries is limited. Thus, the current study aims to highlight the journey of Korean transracial adoptees from Europe to Korea. Three participants narrated their life stories as adoptees in two separate interview sessions. The findings of this study call attention to the adoptees' ongoing reconsideration of their identity as they assimilate life experiences within two disparate cultural settings in Europe and Korea. The study found that ambiguous loss faced by the adoptees from their childhood in Europe continued to their adulthood in Korea. Major themes of the participants' narratives in their journey from Europe to Korea focused on their feelings of loss and the lack of belongingness. This study found that the sense of loss and the lack of belongingness changed over time. Participants were active agents in the process of their journey from Europe to Korea, as they constantly worked to adapt to and improve their situation in face of adversity.

Measurements of plasma parameters in capacitively coupled radio frequency plasma from discharge characteristics: Correlation with optical emission spectroscopy

        B. Bora,H. Bhuyan,M. Favre,E. Wyndham,H. Chuaqui,C.S. Wong 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.7

Plasma parameters from the discharge characteristics of a 13.56 MHz capacitively coupled radio frequency Ar plasma are evaluated on the basis of homogeneous discharge model for wide range of operating pressure. The homogeneous discharge model of capacitively coupled radio frequency discharge is modified to take into account the nonlinear plasma series resonance effect. The effect of drift velocity of the electron due to change in radio frequency electric field and operating pressure is also considered. Considerable dependent of plasma parameters on the drift velocity of the electron as well as on the plasma series resonance effect are observed in low pressure. An irregular variation of calculated plasma density with operating pressure is observed, which is reconfirmed with optical emission spectroscopy.

Effect of ambient gas species on the formation of Cu nanoparticles in wire explosion process

        C.S. Wong,B. Bora,S.L. Yap,Y.S. Lee,H. Bhuyan,M. Favre 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.5

In this paper, the effect of ambient gas species on the characteristics of the produced nanoparticles in wire explosion process is reported. Cu wires with a diameter of 125 mm and length of 6.1 cm were exploded in different ambiances of Ar and admixtures of Ar and N2 at 500 mbar pressure. Immediate formation of arc plasma is observed for Ar ambiance. On the other hand, considerable delay in formation of arc plasma is observed for the admixtures of Ar and N2. The arc plasma formation time is found to increase with increasing N2 concentration in the admixture. Transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the produced nanoparticles. Among the nanoparticles produced in different ambient gas species, the nanoparticles produced in Ar ambiance have higher particle size compared to admixtures of Ar and N2. The particle size is found to reduce with increasing N2 concentration in the ambiance. Difference in arc plasma formation time is probably the factor that gives rise to the difference in the particle sizes.
