        Jacques Perret: Visionary Architect, Practical Engineer, or Connoisseur?

        This research started from the premise that Jacques Perret, “Savoyard gentleman” of the 17th century - whose only legacy consists of Des fortifications et artifices, a book of fortified town designs - is still an elusive figure in the history of architecture and deserves to be further investigated. In particular, attention needs to be paid to the lack of any attempt by scholars to define his actual professional status and cultural background: was he an architect, an engineer, a professional or an amateur? The intention of this paper is therefore to shed some light on this question by examining selected contents of his book describing five projects of fortified towns. Plates and descriptions are carefully analyzed related to the engineering (defensive structures) and architectural (city layouts, buildings) content. The figure that emerges is that of an articulate personality who does not fit either in the architectural or in the military engineering professional world. In the field of engineering, he simultaneously demonstrated the competence of a professional and the naivety of an immature technician, while in the field of architecture he showed an advanced creativity alongside several technical and theoretical misunderstandings. From the analysis in this study, the assumption is formulated that Jacques Perret was a connoisseur, i.e. an erudite without any direct involvement in real professional activity. This work is intended to provide a hypothesis for further researches that, hopefully, will deepen our understanding of several other aspects of Perret’s complex identity and work.

        A Study of Milanese Architectural Officers in the 15th Century: the Engineers of the Municipality of Milan

        The research started from the consideration that, although many aspects of the Milanese Early Renaissance are well known today, thanks to a vast literature, only few studies, so far, have paid attention to the ordinary world of architectural work - and its obscure protagonists - of this area and this period. Moving from the belief that this topic is crucial for a complete understanding of the 15th century architectural world, characterized by a progressive overlapping of roles and responsibilities in the worksites, this study aims to provide a contribution to expand the understanding of this matter, by focusing on a particular aspect of it: the role of the public administration in the architectural activity. In particular, the paper analyzes the characteristics of the "Office of the engineers of the Municipality of Milan", one of the major public architectural institution of the Duchy of Milan in the 15th century. Through an extensive archival survey, conducted in the major archives of Milan and Lombardy, the research achieves two main findings: a) the reconstruction of the complete Office staff throughout the 15th century and, b) an outline of the role and identity of the Office and its officers, through the elaboration of data collected. In particular, professional roles, technical duties, cultural background and tasks of the officers, together with Office management, appointment procedures and salary conditions are highlighted. This research, not meant as an ultimate study on the topic discussed, is intended to provide some material and reference points for further researches that will aim to expand the understanding of this matter.

        A Comparison between Francesco Borromini's Architectural and Structural Design - Focusing on the Churches of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza -

        This study aims to contribute to better understanding of the Baroque architect Francesco Borromini, and, as a consequence, of the Baroque period itself. Recognizing that historical studies have focused mainly on the architectural (i.e., formal) aspects of Borromini's work and largely neglected the technical (i.e., structural) issues, and that the relationship between the architectural and structural worlds in Borromini's activity has consequently never been studied in depth, this research set as its objective the study of this relationship, and has developed a comparative analysis of Borromini's attitude toward architectural problems and questions of tectonics. The investigation has been conducted on two meaningful case-studies in Rome: San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza. The analysis has highlighted a strong dichotomy between Borromini as an architectural designer and Borromini as a structural designer. While Borromini's design is experimental, innovative, and nonconformist, his structures are cautious, tested, and validated by trustworthy tradition. His unprejudiced use of constructive solutions from different historical periods, regions, and cultural areas allows the definition of his approach to tectonics as "constructive eclecticism." The analysis has also highlighted the independence between the architectural and structural aspects of his work, as the two do not interfere with or limit each other. The dichotomy between form and structure in Borromini's work may reflect the "theatrical" tendency of Baroque culture, where what is shown on the face is often different from what is hidden behind.

        Architectural ornament and structure: a study on the links between contemporary ornamental trends and traditional ornament, focusing on the relation between decoration and tectonics

        This research began by considering that, although architecture and architectural culture of the last two decades seem to have rediscovered ornament and some recent studies have reconsidered the ornamental issues of contemporary buildings, there is currently some difficulty in providing a synthetic investigation of this topic, because of the complex nature of the contemporary architectural situation. Following this premise, this research provides some reference points for further studies that will aim to expand the understanding, and attempt to classify and hypothesize the future of contemporary ornamental phenomena. Based on the assumption of the historical continuity of ornamental problems, and adopting the relation - both technical and aesthetic - between ornament and structure as one of the crucial issues to link past and present problems, the study firstly defines two categories and two sub-categories concerning the relation between ornament and structure, namely: a) ornament integral with the structure and b) ornament applied to the structure; a1) ornament visually expressing the structure and a2) ornament not visually expressing the structure. The study then reviews the historical development of ornament from ancient times to the present in the light of the above mentioned categories, and finally discusses the principles of traditional and modern ornament thus analyzed in relation to contemporary ornamental trends, as identified in selected case studies. Some common points between past and contemporary experiences are revealed in order to facilitate further investigations. In particular, the analysis shows a certain trend in contemporary architecture for a strong link between ornamental treatment and the structure of the building and a current tendency among contemporary designers to keep the exterior appearance of the building project separate from the design of the rest of the construction.
