Poisson’s Ratio Measurement Using a Pair of PVDF Ultrasonic Transducer
Enrique Vargas,Sergio Toral,Vicente Gonzalez 한국비파괴검사학회 2009 한국비파괴검사학회지 Vol.29 No.6
This work presents a simple technique to determine the Poisson’s ratio of homogeneous solid material using a pair of low cost PVDF ultrasonic transducers. It is based on transducer’s property of generating longitudinal and transversal waves depending on the excitation frequency. Mechanical tests were conducted to validate the proposed method, resulting in a good agreement between ultrasonic and mechanical techniques.

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are considered as extragonadal if there is no evidence of a primary tumor in the testes or ovaries. GCTs can be classified as seminomas, non-seminomatous, mature teratomas, and immature teratomas based upon histology. Mature teratomas are generally found in prepuberal children. Less than 1% of them have been reported in the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Liver teratomas are extremely rare. There are only 11 cases reported in adults up to 2018. Isolated liver metastasis of ovarian teratoma is also very rare. We present a case of a late metachronous recurrence of liver cystic teratoma with gliosis peritonei in a female adult treated by a right extended hepatectomy along with a literature review.

Transsexual individuals with gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder are rare, with a prevalence reported to range from 0.002% to 0.014%. Studies have shown that mastectomy yields significant improvements in body image and self-esteem in female-to-male transsexual patients. In patients with grade III breast ptosis, mastectomy with a nipple-areolar complex (NAC) graft is the most commonly used technique, although it has several disadvantages. In the case described herein, a bilateral mastectomy preserving the NAC in an inferior pedicle was performed. Additionally, a thin superior thoracic dermal-fat flap was preserved and eventually sutured at the previous inframammary fold, preventing an inverted T scar. This case shows the advantage of this technique for preserving the blood supply and innervation of the NAC, with a low hypopigmentation risk. Furthermore, in this technique, the patch effect does not impair the results of the NAC graft, and there is no need to use an inverted T scar that may result in thoracic feminization.

Objective To find the safety of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) compared to each other, and/or placebo in the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) and/or schizoaffective disorder (SZA).Methods We performed a systematic review and a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the safety of LAIs versus other LAIs or placebo in adults diagnosed with SCZ or SZA. The primary outcomes were treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs), serious treatment emergent adverse events (STEAEs), and deaths. The secondary outcomes included treatment discontinuations due to adverse events and all-cause discontinuations. Results Seventeen RCTs were included (n=7,908). There were no significant differences between LAIs and placebo in the risk of presenting TEAEs. LAIs had a significant lower risk of presenting STEAEs except for aripiprazole. No significant differences in deaths were found. LAIs showed a significant protective effect against all-cause discontinuation, except for haloperidol. Only aripiprazole had a significantly lower risk of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events. Conclusion We found no significant differences in the risk of presenting TEAEs between LAIs and placebo. The majority of LAIs had a significantly lower risk of presenting STEAEs than placebo. Development of international guidelines for the report of safety outcomes related to antipsychotics especially for LAIs in clinical trials could minimize report and interpretation biases and improve the accuracy of posterior meta-analysis.

<P>ABSTRACT: </P><P>The genetic contribution of 51 broodstock, comprising 29 females and 22 males, reared at Hiroshima City Marine Products Promotion Center for the production of stocked black sea bream was monitored during two consecutive years using seven microsatellite DNA loci. The high discrimination ability of these markers was reflected in the polymorphic identification content (<I>PIC</I> = 0.831), the exclusion probability (<I>Q</I> ∼ 1), and the low probability of identity index (<I>I</I> = 3.635−10). The total number of breeders contributing to the mating process was estimated at 32 (62.7%) in 2000 and 30 (58.8%) in 2001. On pedigree reconstruction, 69.3% of the offspring were successfully assigned to a single broodstock pair. Loss of alleles accounted for 16.9% during seed production; nevertheless, 90.9% of males and 69.0% of females participated in the mating process. Based on microsatellite genetic tagging, 58.9% of the fish sampled during the two months after release were identified as hatchery stock, presenting no significant differences from wild conspecifics in either fork length or body weight.</P>

The aim of this research is the partial characterization of proteases extracted from B. karatas; the isolation and purification of proteases from B. karatas fruits were achieved using precipitation, separation by size exclusion chromatography and anion-exchange chromatography; molecular mass (MM) was determined, and the effect of inhibitors, reducing agents and heat on enzyme activity was analyzed. These proteases were compared with proteases from Bromelia pinguin (B. pinguin) and evaluated under similar conditions. The isolation procedure was adequate; only a few protein bands are present in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, zymogram analysis showed protein bands with enzyme activity. Inhibitors, reducing agents and heat were unable to inactivate the proteases extracted from B. karatas and B. pinguin. The semi-purified extracts are a set of proteases with a MM of 66 kDa, but different isoelectric points (3.5–6.5 for B. karatas and 5–9 for B. pinguin), which are found in quaternary structures with proteolytic activity. When denatured, they segment into fragments of approximately 20 and 10 kDa. The data indicate that these plants could be used as sources of proteases since they present good proteolytic activity (21.93 UT for proteases from B. karatas and 43.58 UT for proteases from B. pinguin) and that B. Karatas has potential applications comparable to B. pinguin in the food and health industries.

Space-telescopes placed in the Sun-Earth second Lagrange point (L2) observe the sky following a scan strategy that is usually based on a spin-precession motion. Knowing which regions of the sky will be more observed by the instrument is important for the science operations and the instrument calibration. Computing sky observation parameters numerically (discretizing time and the sky) can consume large amounts of time and computational resources, especially when high resolution isrequired. This problem becomesmore critical if quantities are evaluated at detector level instead of considering the instrument entire Field of View (FoV). In previous studies, the authors have derived analytic solutions for quantities that characterize the observation of each point in the sky in terms of observation time according to the scan strategy parameters and the instrument FoV. Analytic solutions allow to obtain results faster than using numerical methods as well as capture detailed characteristics which can be overseen due to discretization limitations. The original approach is based on the analytic expression of the instrument trace over the sky. Such equations are implicit and thusrequiresthe use of numeric solversto compute the quantities. In this work, a new and simpler approach for computing one ofsuch quantities(mean observation time) is presented. The quantity is first computed for pure spin motion and then the effect of the spin axis precession is incorporated under the assumption that the precession motion is slow compared to the spin motion. In this sense, this new approach further simplifies the analytic approach, sparing the use of numeric solvers, which reduces the complexity of the implementation and the computing time.
