Nitrate is one of the most important chemicals in agricultural and environmental management. Most methods for NO_(3) analysis. however, require expensive equipment or compliccated procdures. The objective of this study was to develop a simple rapid accourate procedure for NO_(3) analysis that can be conducted in laberatories worldwide whithout the need for specialized equipment We vased our studies on a colorimetric method that involves electrophilic aromatic substitution(nitration) between nitronium and salicylate. The simpligied procedure was tested for NO_(3) analysis of water, soil, and resin extracts. Only 1 ml. of sample containing 0 to 4 mg NO_(3)-N I is required and a single solution (TRI solution made as a mixture of sodium salicylate 2-hydrocybenzoic acid monosodium salt, NaCl and anmonium sulfamate sulfamic acid monoammonium salt is used for color develpment, The detection limit is 0.1㎍NO_(3)-N with ilnearity up to 4㎍ NO_(3) in a final volume of 11 ml Evuporation of the sample may be done in serveral wats to remove water fromreactants as long as the temperature for requried neutralization with 2 M Na()ll prior to analysis and soil extracts from 1M KCl provided more uniform results than from 2 M KCl Results from all types of solution samples were highly signigicatly correlated wuth those by the automated Cd-reduction method. This simple reproducible and it requires only inexpensive equipment.
