Mineral content and antioxidant potential of Pu-erh tea of different storage periods

Pu-erh tea is a health-promoting beverage that is consumed in many countries; however, the nutritional value of the tea is significantly affected by various factors including processing and storage. The objective of this study was to investigate the mineral contents and antioxidant potentials of 2-, 9-, and 21-year-old Pu-erh teas. The results demonstrated that the total mineral content of fermented tea (FT) was higher than those of raw tea (RT) after 9 years and 21 years. The 9-year-old FT had the highest K content, while the 2-year-old FT had the lowest K content among the FT samples. In contrast, the 2-year-old RT had the highest K content, while that of the 21-year-old RT was the lowest among the RT samples. Interestingly, the 9-year-old RT had the highest Na, Ca, Mg, and Cu contents among the all of the sampels . Overall, these results reveal that Pu-erh tea stored for 9 years would be the most beneficial with regards to the mineral content and antioxidant potential. Furthermore, this study provides valuable insights into the changes that occur in the nutrient content of Pu-erh tea during storage.
Autophagy Regulates Formation of Primary Cilia in Mefloquine-Treated Cells

Primary cilia have critical roles in coordinating multiple cellular signaling pathways. Dysregulation of primary cilia is implicated in various ciliopathies. To identify specific regulators of autophagy, we screened chemical libraries and identified mefloquine, an anti-malaria medicine, as a potent regulator of primary cilia in human retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells. Not only ciliated cells but also primary cilium length was increased in mefloquine-treated RPE cells. Treatment with mefloquine strongly induced the elongation of primary cilia by blocking disassembly of primary cilium. In addition, we found that autophagy was increased in mefloquine-treated cells by enhancing autophagic flux. Both chemical and genetic inhibition of autophagy suppressed ciliogenesis in mefloquine-treated RPE cells. Taken together, these results suggest that autophagy induced by mefloquine positively regulates the elongation of primary cilia in RPE cells.
Semicircular Horizontal Approach in Breast Reduction: Clinical Experience in 38 Cases

Background Various techniques are used for performing breast reduction. Wise-pattern and vertical scar techniques are the most commonly employed approaches. However, a vertical scar in the mid-lower breast is prominent and aesthetically less pleasant. In contrast, a semicircular horizontal approach does not leave a vertical scar in the mid breast and transverse scars can be hidden in the inframammary fold. In this paper, we describe the experiences and results of semicircular horizontal breast reductions performed by a single surgeon. Methods Between September 1996 and October 2013, our senior author used this technique in 38 cases in the US and at our institution. We used a superiorly based semicircular incision, where the upper skin paddle was pulled down to the inframammary fold with the nipple-areola complex pulled through the keyhole. Results The average total reduction per breast was 584 g, ranging from 286 to 794 g. The inferior longitudinal pedicle was used in all the cases. The average reduction of the distance from the sternal notch to the nipple was 13 cm (range, 11-15 cm). The mean decrease in the bra cup size was 1.7 cup sizes (range, a decrease of 1 to 3). We obtained very satisfactory results with a less noticeable scar, no complication such as necrosis of the nipple or the skin flap, wound infection, aseptic necrosis of the breast tissue, or wound dehiscence. One patient had a small hematoma that resolved spontaneously. Conclusions This technique is straightforward and easy to learn, and offers a safe, effective, and predictable way for treating mammary hypertrophy.
Effects of Glycerol Concentration on Viability of Frozen-thawed Canine Spermatozoa

Glycerol is the cryoprotectant most frequently used to freeze semen in several of species. The objective of the present study was to compare the effect of three different glycerol concentrations (4, 6 or 8%, v/v) on frozen-thawed dog sperm survival rate. Ejaculates from 9 dogs collected by digital manipulation were pooled and assessed by macroscopic and microscopic criteria. Semen was divided into 3 aliquots, which were centrifuged and the sperm pellets rediluted with first Tris-glucose-citric acid extender. After 1 h cooling at , second extender containing 4, 6 or 8% glycerol was added, respectively. The semen was loaded into 0.25 ml straws and frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen and thawed. Sperm vigor, live:dead spermatozoa ratio using HOS test, and sperm morphology using stain were evaluated. After thawing, there were no significant differences among groups in vigor, viability and morphology. In conclusion, the three glycerol concentrations (4, 6 or 8%) can be used successfully in cryopreservation of canine semen. Therefore the use of 4% glycerol in the extender has less toxic effect and reduces of freezing injuries.

A new kidney bean cultivar, “Noghyeob 1” was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2005. “Noghyeob 1” was selected from a cross between KLG50074 and KLG50063. It has determinate growth habit, white flower, green pod color, oval shape of crossed section of pod at the harvesting time for edible pod, white seed coat and middle seed size (21.1 grams per 100 seeds). The average yield of edible pod of “Noghyeob 1” was 24.25 M/T per hectare in the yield trials which were carried out at the green house in spring and autumn in 2005. It was 7 percent higher than that of the check cultivar “Kangnangkong 1”.
GTVseq: A Web-based Genotyping Tool for Viral Sequences

Genotyping Tool for Viral SEQuences (GTVseq) provides scientists with the genotype information on the viral genome sequences including HIV-1, HIV-2, HBV, HCV, HTLV-1, HTLV-2, poliovirus, enterovirus, flavivirus, Hantavirus, and rotavirus. GTVseq produces alternative and additive genotype information for the query viral sequences based on two different, but related, scoring methods. The genotype information produced is reported in a graphical manner for the reference genotype matches and each graphical output is linked to the detailed sequence alignments between the query and the matched reference sequences. GTVseq also reports the potential 'repeats' and/or 'recombination' sequence region in a separated window. GTVseq does not replace completely other well-known genotyping tools such as NCBI's virus sequence genotyping tool (http://www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/projects/genotyping/formpage.cgi), but provides additional information useful in the confirmation or for further investigation of the genotype(s) for the newly isolated viral sequences.

기계이앙과 무논점파재배시 간단관개가 벼의 생육, 쌀수량과 미질에 미치는 영향과 물절약 효과를 구명하고자 2009년과 2010년에 시험한 결과는 다음과 같다. 관개량은 기계이앙이 801mm, 무논점파재배가 717mm로 기계이앙이 더 많았다. 관개방법별로는 기계이앙재배에서 관행관개가 899mm, 간단관개가 703mm이었고, 무논점파재배에서는 관행관개가813mm, 간단관개가 621mm이었다. 간단관개는 관행관개에비해 22~24%의 관개수를 절약할 수 있었으며, 이에 따른 단위 관개량당 쌀수량인 물생산성은 기계이앙과 무논점파재배모두 간단관개가 높게 나타났다. 초장, 간장, 수장은 간단관개와 관행관개에 차이가 없었으나, 분얼수는 간단관개에서 다소높았다. 수량 및 수량구성요소 모두 관개방법별 유의적인 차이가 없었으며, 완전미 비율, 단백질 함량도 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 이상의 결과에서 간단관개를 하여도 관행관개방식에 비해 벼의 생육 및 수량, 그리고 미질에 차이가 없었던 반면 물생산성을 높이는 결과를 보였다. 따라서 벼 재배시용수절약 측면에서 간단관개의 적용이 가능할 것으로 보인다.간단관개를 포함한 종합적인 재배기술을 연구하여 관개비용의절감이나 수량의 증대 같은 이익적 요소들이 제공된다면 농가에서도 관심을 갖게 될 것으로 생각된다. To verify the effect of intermittent irrigation on water saving, two irrigation regimes, inter-mittent irrigation (II) and conventional irrigation (CI), were applied to machine transplanting (TP) andwet-hill-seeding (WHS) in 2009 and 2010. In intermittent irrigation plots, alternate flooding was appliedfrom 20 days after transplanting and from 30 days after direct seeding. Conventional irrigation wasimposed by continuous flooding including broken irrigation. The amount of irrigation water in II plotswas 22% and 24% lower than that in CI plots of machine transplanting and wet-hill-seeding cultivation,respectively. Water productivity of intermittent irrigation plots ranged from 0.73 and 0.79. There wereno significant different in plant growth and milled rice yield between the irrigation methods.
