        Prediction of Overall Survival Based on Isocitrate Dehydrogenase 1 Mutation and 18F-FDG Uptake on PET/CT in Patients With Cerebral Gliomas

        PURPOSE: This retrospective study aimed to correlate F-FDG uptake on PET/CT with isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme isoform 1 (IDH1) mutation in patients with cerebral gliomas. Hierarchical interactions between factors affecting overall survival (OS) were also examined. METHODS: In 59 patients with glioma, the ratio of the SUVmax of a glioma to the SUVmean of the contralateral cortex (G/C ratio) on F-FDG PET/CT and the presence of IDH1 mutation were correlated. The prognostic value of clinicopathologic factors and G/C ratio for OS were assessed using a Cox proportional hazards model and classification and regression tree models. RESULTS: The mean G/C ratio of IDH1-mutant tumors was significantly lower than that of IDH1 wild-type tumors (0.73 vs 1.14, P = 0.004). In multivariate analysis, IDH1-mutant and G/C ratio were significant for OS. The classification and regression tree modeling identified 3 risk groups for OS (group 1: IDH1 mutant [hazard ratio, 0.2]; group 2: G/C ratio ≤0.8 with IDH1 wild type [hazard ratio, 0.83]; group 3: G/C ratio >0.8 with IDH1 wild type [hazard ratio, 1.9]) (overall P < 0.001). The mean OS was 37.0 months in group 1, 28.6 months in group 2, and 20.7 months in group 3, respectively, showing significant differences among the groups (group 1 vs group 2: P = 0.023, group 2 vs group 3: P = 0.049, group 1 vs group3: P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: F-FDG uptake of IDH1-mutant gliomas was significantly lower than that of IDH1 wild-type gliomas. IDH1 mutation was the most important factor in identifying patients with the best prognosis, whereas increased F-FDG uptake provided additional prognostic information for predicting poor OS among patients with IDH1 wild-type gliomas.

        Effect of ammonia (NH<sub>3</sub>) plasma treatment on silicon nitride (SiN<sub>x</sub>) gate dielectric for organic thin film transistor with soluble organic semiconductor

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effect of an ammonia plasma treatment on silicon nitride (SiN<SUB>x</SUB>) gate dielectrics for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with soluble organic semiconductors (OSCs) was studied. Our OTFTs were fabricated by using the soluble derivatives of Poly(bi-thiophene) as the p-type polymer semiconductor material and SiN<SUB>x</SUB> thin films with nitrogen oxygen (N<SUB>2</SUB>O) and ammonia (NH<SUB>3</SUB>) plasma treatments as the gate dielectric. To improve the performance and stability of the OTFT devices, we studied the basic mechanism of the plasma treatment on the SiN<SUB>x</SUB> gate dielectric and the gold (Au) electrode surface. The SiN<SUB>x</SUB>-OTFTs with a NH<SUB>3</SUB> plasma treatment yielded the improved results in terms of a higher field-effect mobility (<I>μ</I><SUB>fe</SUB>) of 0.06 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> S<SUP>−1</SUP> with a lower interface charge trap density of 4.45 × 10<SUP>−11</SUP> (cm<SUP>2</SUP> eV)<SUP>−1</SUP> and a lower contact resistance of 0.384 MΩ-cm. The repulsive force of the soluble OSC solvent was reduced at the edge of the source-drain (S-D) electrode due to the difference between the surface energies of the channel region and Au S-D electrodes.</P>

        The Economic Burden of Cancers Attributable to Metabolic Syndrome in Korea

        Objectives: Metabolic syndrome is an important etiologic factor in the development of certain types of cancers. The economic cost of the treatment of cancer has been steadily increasing. We therefore estimated the economic burden of cancers attributable to metabolic syndrome in Korea. Methods: We reviewed metabolic syndrome-related cancers and relative risk and then calculated population attributable fractions. We analyzed insurance claims data for metabolic syndrome-related cancers in 2012 in order to estimate the direct costs associated with these cancers, including hospitalization, outpatient visits, transportation costs, and caregivers' costs as well as indirect costs such as loss of productivity due to cancer treatment and premature death. Results: In 2012, 18 070 patients in Korea had cancers attributable to metabolic syndrome. The economic burden was USD 199.8 million and the direct and indirect costs were USD 124.5 million and USD 75.3 million, respectively. Conclusions: We estimated the economic burden of cancers attributable to metabolic syndrome in Korea and the efforts are necessary to reduce this burden.

        Occurrence and diet analysis of sea turtles in Korean shore

        Background: Sea turtles, which are globally endangered species, have been stranded and found as bycatch on the Korean shore recently. More studies on sea turtles in Korea are necessary to aid their conservation. To investigate the spatio-temporal occurrence patterns of sea turtles on the Korean shore, we recorded sampling locations and dates, identified species and sexes and measured sizes (maximum curved carapace length; CCL) of collected sea turtles from the year 2014 to 2020. For an analysis of diets through stomach contents, we identified the morphology of the remaining food and extracted DNA, followed by amplification, cloning, and sequencing. Results: A total of 62 stranded or bycaught sea turtle samples were collected from the Korean shores during the study period. There were 36 loggerhead turtles, which were the dominant species, followed by 19 green turtles, three hawksbill turtles, two olive ridley turtles, and two leatherback turtles. The highest numbers were collected in the year 2017 and during summer among the seasons. In terms of locations, most sea turtles were collected from the East Sea, especially from Pohang. Comparing the sizes of collected sea turtles according to species, the average CCL of loggerhead turtles was 79.8 cm, of green turtles was 73.5 cm, and of the relatively large leatherback turtle species was 126.2 cm. In most species, the proportion of females was higher than that of males and juveniles, and was more than 70% across all the species. Food remains were morphologically identified from 19 stomachs, mainly at class level. Seaweeds were abundant in stomachs of green turtles, and Bivalvia was the most detected food item in loggerhead turtles. Based on DNA analysis, food items from a total of 26 stomachs were identified to the species or genus level. The gulfweed, Sargassum thunbergii, and the kelp species, Saccharina japonica, were frequently detected from the stomachs of green turtles and the jellyfish, Cyanea nozakii, the swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, and kelps had high frequencies of occurrences in loggerhead turtles. Conclusions: Our findings support those of previous studies suggesting that sea turtles are steadily appearing in the Korean sea. In addition, we verified that fish and seaweed, which inhabit the Korean sea, are frequently detected in the stomach of sea turtles. Accordingly, there is a possibility that sea turtles use the Korean sea as feeding grounds and habitats. These results can serve as basic data for the conservation of globally endangered sea turtles.

      • Two-parameter scaling theory of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity in a Weyl metal phase: Chiral anomaly, weak disorder, and finite temperature

        <P>It is at the heart of modern condensed matter physics to investigate the role of a topological structure in anomalous transport phenomena. In particular, chiral anomaly turns out to be the underlying mechanism for the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity in a Weyl metal phase. The existence of a dissipationless current channel causes enhancement of electric currents along the direction of a pair of Weyl points or applied magnetic fields (B). However, temperature (T) dependence of the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity has not been understood yet in the presence of disorder scattering since it is not clear at all how to introduce effects of disorder scattering into the topological-in-origin transport coefficient at finite temperatures. The calculation based on the Kubo formula of the current-current correlation function is simply not known for this anomalous transport coefficient. Combining the renormalization group analysis with the Boltzmann transport theory to encode the chiral anomaly, we reveal how disorder scattering renormalizes the distance between a pair of Weyl points and such a renormalization effect modifies the topological-in-origin transport coefficient at finite temperatures. As a result, we find breakdown of B/T scaling, given by B/T1+eta with 0 < eta < 1. This breakdown may be regarded to be a fingerprint of the interplay between disorder scattering and topological structure in a Weyl metal phase.</P>

      • Direct Synthesis of Polymer Nanocapsules: Self-Assembly of Polymer Hollow Spheres through Irreversible Covalent Bond Formation

        <P>A detailed study of the direct synthesis of polymer nanocapsules, which does not require any template, and core removal, is presented. Thiol−ene “click” reaction between a CB[6] derivative (<B>1</B>) with 12 allyloxy groups at the periphery and dithiols directly produced polymer nanocapsules with a highly stable structure and relatively narrow size distribution. Based on a number of observations including the intermediates detected by DLS, TEM, and SEM studies, a mechanism of the nanocapsule formation was proposed, which includes 2D oligomeric patches turning into a hollow sphere. A theoretical study supports that the formation of a hollow sphere from a disk-shaped intermediate can be thermodynamically favorable under certain conditions. In particular, the effects of various factors such as monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and medium on the formation of polymer nanocapsules have been investigated, which qualitatively agree with those predicted by our theoretical model. An interesting feature of the polymer nanocapsules was that the polymer shell made of a CB[6] derivative allows facile tailoring of its surface properties in a noncovalent and modular manner by virtue of the unique recognition properties of the accessible molecular cavities exposed on the surface. Furthermore, this approach appears to be applicable to any building unit with a flat core and multiple polymerizable groups at the periphery which can direct polymer growth in lateral directions. Other reactions, such as amide bond formation, can be used for the synthesis of polymer nanocapsules in this approach. The representative type was selected to generalize the retrofit of the star - shaped building which is being promoted individually by selecting the representative type of business building by prototype. Future research will attempt to identify the impact of impact factor changes on building energy consumption and reclassify factors that should be considered first in the retrofits.
