2021년 EBS 연계교재와 대학수학능력시험의 듣기 및 읽기 지문의 어휘 범위

        강동호 ( Kang¸ Dongho ) 한국중등영어교육학회 2021 중등영어교육 Vol.14 No.2

The present study aims to investigate lexical coverage of General Service List (GSL)/Academic Word List (AWL), 2015 Basic Vocabulary of Ministry of Education, and 10 BNC/COCA word frequency lists in 2021 EBS-linked textbooks and CSAT. For the purpose of the study, AntWordProfiler was used to analyze the data. First of all, the word tokens in CSAT included higher percentage of GSL than those in EBS books in both reading and listening corpora, but the word tokens in both EBS and CSAT had high percentage of AWL(7-9%) in the reading corpora. Secondly, the word tokens in the reading corpora of both EBS and CSAT cover between 94% and 96% of 2015 Basic Vocabulary of Ministry of Education, and those in the listening counterparts also cover between 97% and 98%. Finally, Korean high school students need to know 4,000 and 6,000 word families of BNC/COCA to understand the reading corpora of EBS textbooks, compared with 2,000 and 3,000 families in the CSAT counterparts respectively, based on 95% and 98% figures. On the other hand, based on 95% and 98% lexical coverage figures, they need to know 3,000 and 4,000 word families for listening comprehension, while they need 2,000 and 3,000 word families respectively. Findings and implications are discussed at the end.

Impact of Written Corrective Feedback vs. Reformulation on L2 Learners’ Uptake in Writing

        ( Dongho Kang ) 글로벌영어교육학회 2024 Studies in English education Vol.29 No.1

The study seeks to answer if there are any differences in the first uptake after receiving two types of feedback (WCF vs. reformulations) and in the second uptake after participating in the whole-class discussion and Q&A session. The participants were thirteen Korean adult EFL learners with low or intermediate English proficiency. The findings indicated that the 2nd uptake was significantly higher than the first one, regardless of feedback type. Regarding the categories of uptake, student uptake primarily occurred in lexis and form in both 1st and 2nd uptake. Secondly, the student uptake in the reformulation condition significantly exceeded that in WCF, regardless of their proficiency levels. In addition, the student uptake was more evident in form and mechanics in the WCF condition, but in lexis and discourse in the reformulation condition. Finally, the intermediate-level students exhibited a higher uptake compared to the low-level students. The intermediate-level students demonstrated relatively higher uptake in lexis, form, and discourse while the low-level students showed more uptake in mechanics. The study concludes with pedagogical implications based on the findings.

A Study of Meaning-focused and Form-focused Tasks on L2 Vocabulary Acquisition of Low and Intermediate Levels

Dongho Kang 한국영어학회 2023 영어학 Vol.23 No.-

While the literature extensively discusses the benefits of form-focused instructions for grammatical aspects, there has been limited research exploring the impact of form-focused tasks on second language vocabulary acquisition. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of meaning-focused and form-focused (both non-contrastive and contrastive) tasks on the vocabulary learning of low and intermediate-level students in Korean college settings. The results revealed that the meaning-focused group demonstrated vocabulary learning gains only in the posttest, whereas both form-focused tasks resulted in significant improvement in both the posttest and delayed test. This suggests that students derived greater benefits from the form-focused tasks compared to the meaning-focused task in terms of L2 vocabulary learning. Additionally, the low proficiency group benefitted more from the non-contrastive form-focused task, while the intermediate group benefitted more from the contrastive form-focused task. The study will delve into the theoretical implications and discuss the pedagogical implications arising from these findings.

Role of Input and Output Task-induced Involvement in Korean EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning

Dongho Kang,Tae-Il Pae 한국외국어교육학회 2020 Foreign languages education Vol.27 No.1

The study investigated how task types such as input or output could affect Korean EFL learners’ vocabulary learning at both short- and long-term periods after treatment. Forty two college students in Korea were randomly assigned to one of the four tasks. Based on Involvement Load Hypothesis, each task induced the same or different involvement loads: Read without glossary (Input), Gap with glossary (Input & Output), Gap without glossary (Input & Output), and Sentence and write (Output). Receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge was measured right after the treatment and a month later. The output-oriented tasks were found to be more effective than the input-oriented tasks regardless of type of vocabulary knowledge. The current study concluded that modalities such as input or output other than task-induced involvement load can contribute to Korean EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. The pedagogical discussion will be made at the conclusion.

An Exploratory Factor Analysis of L2 Motivational Self System in Korean EFL College Contexts

Dongho Kang 한국외국어교육학회 2017 Foreign languages education Vol.24 No.1

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to find context-specific motivational factors in Korean college contexts within the framework of Gardner’s integrativeness and Dörnyei’s (2005, 2009) L2 Motivational Self System; (2) to examine how those motivational factors explain motivated behavior. For this purpose, motivation data by 787 students was analyzed. The factor analysis revealed eight factors in Korean context: promotional instrumentality, bad learning experience, ought-to L2 self, integrativeness, elusive ideal L2 self, ethnocentrism, intercultural avoidance, and international posture. The regression analysis showed that four motivational factors, bad learning experience, ought-to L2 self, elusive ideal L2 self, and promotional instrumentality, significantly explained the participants’ motivated behavior. The findings indicate that there existed context-specific motivational factors which could better explain success of L2 in Korean EFL college contexts. The theoretical and pedagogical implications were provided at the conclusion.

Noticing and L2 Learning in the Output-based Focus-on-form

        Dongho Kang 팬코리아영어교육학회 2011 영어교육연구 Vol.23 No.3

The claim that L2 acquisition requires noticing is the empirical bases of recent argument for the need of L2 instruction. While the effectiveness of the focus-on-form instruction has been investigated through questionnaires or pre- and post-test design in learning of target forms, few attempts have been made to investigate directly the noticing and L2 learning in the output-based instruction. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the output-based instruction, which is production-oriented practice, can make the target form, English relative clauses, more noticeable and affect learning in terms of L2 learners’ proficient levels. The findings showed that the output-based instruction helped learners notice the target form, which resulted in L2 learning and that the high level students significantly improved after the output-based instruction, while their counterparts were not. In addition, the content-specific knowledge of L2 learners, not the general proficiency, influenced their uptake and learning of the target form.

      • Whitelists Based Multiple Filtering Techniques in SCADA Sensor Networks

Kang, DongHo,Kim, ByoungKoo,Na, JungChan,Jhang, KyoungSon Hindawi Limited 2014 Journal of applied mathematics (JAM) Vol.2014 No.-

Internet of Things (IoT) consists of several tiny devices connected together to form a collaborative computing environment. Recently IoT technologies begin to merge with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) sensor networks to more efficiently gather and analyze real-time data from sensors in industrial environments. But SCADA sensor networks are becoming more and more vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to increased connectivity. To safely adopt IoT technologies in the SCADA environments, it is important to improve the security of SCADA sensor networks. In this paper we propose a multiple filtering technique based on whitelists to detect illegitimate packets. Our proposed system detects the traffic of network and application protocol attacks with a set of whitelists collected from normal traffic.

      • Delayed subdural block after spinal anesthesia for transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) - a case report

Dongho Kang,Yong Sung Ro,Bo-eun Kim,Seong Heon Lee,Hyung Gon Lee 조선대학교 의학연구원 2021 The Medical Journal of Chosun University Vol.46 No.2

A subdural block is a rare complication of spinal anesthesia, and its symptoms usually develop within 30 minutes. We present the case presumed to be delayed onset of subdural block occurring one hour and 40 minutes after normal onset spinal anesthesia. A 52-year-old female patient underwent transurethral resection of a bladder tumor. Ten minutes after spinal anaethesia, the sensory block reached the T12 sensory dermatome level and surgery was uneventful. One hour and 40 minutes after spinal anesthesia, the patient complained of a tingling sensation and numbness in both hands at her ward. Gradually, the numbness went up to the neck, and the motor function of both upper extremities decreased. Nearly 3 h after spinal anesthesia, the patient’s symptoms started to improve and were restored 4 h after spinal anesthesia. Anesthesiologists should be aware of the possibility of unusually delayed onset of subdural block after normal-onset spinal anesthesia.
