      • Influence of Occupational Physical Activity on Anthropometric Profile and Body Composition of Bricklayers in Kwara state, Nigeria

Dominic Olufunmilola Leah(Dominic Olufunmilola Leah ),Etchie Aboyowa Omokwa(Etchie Aboyowa Omokwa ),Seidina Iliasu Yakubu(Seidina Iliasu Yakubu ),Niyi-Odumosu Faatihah Adeyinka(Niyi-Odumosu Faatihah A 사피엔시아 2018 Exercise Medicine Vol.2 No.-

Objectives: Optimal amount of muscle and fat mass has been associated with level of physical activity and are basic determinants of individuals’ health, fitness including occupational performance. The study determined the level of occupational physical activity and influence on anthropometrics, body composition and health of bricklayers in Kwara state, Nigeria. Methods: Descriptive correlational design was used. During the study only three bricklaying sites were functional and all the 45 bricklayers who met the inclusion criteria were purposively selected. Standardized instruments: non-elastic anthropometric tape rule, stadiometre and weight scale were used for anthropometric and body composition measurement while Occupational Physical Activity Questionnaire (OPAQ; r = .72) was used to assess work-related physical activity. Pilot test was conducted to confirm calibration and functionality of body composition equipment. Informed consent was sought from the participants with ethical approval obtained from the Institutional board. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS V20.0 with descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation for analyses of body composition and physical activity while inferential statistics of PPMC and t-test were for analysis of hypotheses at a 0.05 alpha level. Results: Participants performed vigorous intensity occupational physical activity expending an average of 2,699.1 MET-min∙wk-1. Occupational physical activity negatively correlated with their body mass index (N = 45, r = -.06, r2 = .36%, p = .05); Waist circumference (N = 45, r = -.083, r2 = .69%, p = .05) and positively correlated with their bicep circumference (N = 45, r = .61, r2 = 37.2%, p = .001) and chest circumference (N = 45, r = .40, r2 = 16%, p = .007). Conclusions: Bricklaying positively influenced body parameters which might induce health and fitness benefits. However, there is need for health promotion intervention for enlightenment and healthy lifestyle practice among bricklayers to improve overall health and fitness.

Eight Weeks Twenty Meters Walk Aerobic Exercise Improve Cardio-respiratory Fitness and Muscular Strength of Stroke Survivor Outpatients in Tertiary Hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria

( Israel Arogundade Ojo ),( Olufunmilola Leah Dominic ),( Wale Johnson Adeyemi ) 대한물리의학회 2021 대한물리의학회지 Vol.16 No.2

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of an eight weeks twenty meters walk on the cardiorespiratory fitness and strength of the shoulder extensor, hip extensor, and dorsiflexor of stroke survivor outpatients in two tertiary hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria. METHODS: A purposive sampling technique was used to select 21 registered right or left outpatient hemiplegic stroke survivors in a pre- and post-test experimental research design. The research questions were presented using the descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The differences between the mean of the cardio-respiratory indices and the muscle strength were tested by repeated measures analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni post-hoc test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: No significant differences in heart rate were observed at week 0 compared to week 4. A significant decrease was recorded in the parameter at week 8, compared to week 4. Moreover, there were significant decreases in blood pressure and respiratory rate in week 0, compared to week 4, and in the respiratory rate, compared to week 8. In contrast, significant elevations in VO2 max were observed in week 0, compared to week 4, and in the week 4, compared to week 8. Furthermore, significant elevations in muscular strength were documented when comparisons were made at weeks 0, 4, and 8. CONCLUSION: Eight weeks of twenty meters walk aerobic exercise improve the cardio-respiratory fitness and muscular strength of stroke survivor outpatients.

Marked Corridor 20 Meters Brief Walking Aerobic Exercise Improves the Quality of Life and Functional Capability of Stroke Survivor Outpatients in Tertiary Hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria

        Israel Arogundade Ojo,Olufunmilola Leah Dominic,Wale Johnson Adeyemi 대한물리의학회 2022 대한물리의학회지 Vol.17 No.2

PURPOSE: The functional limitations in stroke survivors promote sedentary lifestyles and quality of life inadequacies, but there is increasing evidence that this could be minimized by physical exercise. Therefore, this study examined the effects of physical exercise on the quality of life (QoL) and functional capacity (ability to stand up from a sitting position) among stroke survivors drafted from two tertiary hospitals in Osogbo, Nigeria. METHODS: A purposive sampling technique was used to select 21 registered right or left outpatient hemiplegic stroke survivors in a pre- and post-test experimental research design. The research questions were presented using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the study hypothesis at the .05 alpha level for significance. RESULTS: Compared to the baseline (week 0), there were significant increases in the general quality of life, healthy well-being, physical exercise, pain perception, and environmental domains of QOL among the survivors in week four. Moreover, a significant increase was observed in these indices in week eight, compared to week four, except for the pain perception domain. Compared to the baseline, there was a significant decrease in the time it took the stroke survivors to stand up from a sitting position in week four. A significant decrease was observed in this index in week eight compared to week four. CONCLUSION: Marked corridor 20 meters brief walking exercise for eight weeks significantly improved the quality of life and ability to stand up from a sitting position in stroke survivors in Osogbo, Nigeria.
