Photosynthesis is a highly robust process allowing for rapid adjustment to changing environmental conditions. The efficient acclimation depends on balanced redox metabolism and control of reactive oxygen species release which triggers signaling cascades and potentially detrimental oxidation reactions. Thiol peroxidases of the peroxiredoxin and glutathione peroxidase type, and ascorbate peroxidases are the main peroxide detoxifying enzymes of the chloroplast. They use different electron donors and are linked to distinct redox networks. In addition, the peroxiredoxins serve functions in redox regulation and retrograde signaling. The complexity of plastid peroxidases is discussed in context of suborganellar localization, substrate preference, metabolic coupling, protein abundance, activity regulation, interactions, signaling functions, and the conditional requirement for high antioxidant capacity. Thus the review provides an opinion on the advantage of linking detoxification of peroxides to different enzymatic systems and implementing mechanisms for their inactivation to enforce signal propagation within and from the chloroplast.

Hyoid excursion during the swallow in stroke survivors

Purpose: The purpose of the investigation was to examine whether duration, distance or velocity of hyoid excursion was associated with aspiration in post-stroke survivors. Methods: Duration, distance and velocity of hyoid excursion were calculated using videofluoroscopic swallowing examinations (VFSEs) of 39 post-stroke survivors. Statistical comparisons were made using a two-way repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) with between subject variable being aspirators and non-aspirators, and within subject variable being bolus volume (5 mL and 10 mL). The significance level was set as p<0.05. Results: The duration of hyoid excursion in aspirators was significantly slower than in non-aspirators. There were no significant differences in hyoid velocity or distance between aspirators and non-aspirators. Conclusions: Slower hyoid excursion duration may put stroke survivors at risk of aspiration. It is necessary for the clinician to design the intervention strategies to compensate for or rehabilitate from slow hyoid excursion in stroke survivors.
Enhanced iron oxidation to improve AMD treatment

Fe(II) and acidity are the most commonly encountered contaminants in acid mine drainage (AMD). Passive treatment for AMD involves addition of alkalinity, aerobic processes that result in oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) oxides, and anoxic treatments in which sulfate is reduced to sulfide with consequent precipitation of Fe(II) sulfides. Alkalinity is usually provided by dissolution of limestone in passive treatments or by addition of lime or caustic in active systems. This paper focuses on the chemistry of AMD treatment, the mechanisms and the rates of oxidation of Fe(II) to produce Fe(III) oxides and strategies that can be used to manipulate the treatment chemistry in order to control the rate of oxidation and the quality of the residual Fe(III) oxides.
Measuring Hearing Aid Benefit in Nicaragua using Cultural Considerations

Purpose: Hearing aid outcome measures often do not account for cultural differences among patients. The purpose of the current study was two fold. First, outcomes on the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) for individuals in rural Nicaragua were compared to reported results from other countries. Second, interviews were used to develop a culturally relevant tool that could be appended to the IOI-HA to assess hearing aid benefit for patients fitted with amplification in rural Nicaragua. Methods: The IOI-HA was administered and qualitative interviews were conducted. Interview respondents were asked about sounds that are part of their everyday lives. Using the data from the interviews, areas were identified in which success with hearing aids should be assessed. Results: Responses on the IOI-HA for adults in the current study were comparable to reported results from other countries. Interview responses from over half of participants fell into four broad areas: speech (in quiet and noise), traffic sounds, listening to music, and birds. Conclusions: Nicaraguan responses on the IOI-HA were similar to previous reports from other countries. However, it was difficult for patients to complete the questionnaire independently, supporting the need for a culturally relevant assessment tool. Based on the literature review and the responses of participants, a hearing aid benefit tool was constructed for use with amplification recipients in Nicaragua.
