Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of associating calcium butyrate with tannin extract, compared to an antimicrobial on the growth performance, incidence of diarrhea, intestinal histology, immune-expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in piglets. Methods: Seventy-two piglets (36 barrows and 36 gilts) weaned at 28±2 d and initial body weight of 7.17±1.07 kg were allocated to 3 treatments in a randomized complete block design with 8 replicates per treatment and 3 animals per experimental unit. Treatments were composed of NC, negative control: basal diet without additives; PC, positive control: basal diet + 40 mg/kg of colistin sulfate; or BT, basal diet + calcium butyrate + tannin extract. The butyrate and tannin inclusion levels were 0.15% in the pre-starter phase and 0.075% in the starter phase. Incidence of diarrhea was monitored daily, and on d 14 and 35 of experiment, 1 animal from each experimental unit was slaughtered to collect intestinal samples. Results: No significant differences were observed for growth performance. The butyrateand tannin-based additive resulted in reduced (p<0.05) incidence of diarrhea in piglets during d 1 to 14 and d 1 to 35 in comparison with the other treatments. Piglets that consumed the diet containing the calcium-butyrate and tannin showed a lower (p<0.05) crypt depth in the duodenum than those receiving the NC treatment at 14 d of experimentation. The BT treatment provided a lower (p<0.05) immune-expression of COX-2 at 14 d and TNF-α at 35 d in the duodenum. Conclusion: Association between calcium butyrate and tannin extract resulted in a significant decrease in the incidence of diarrhea and inflammatory process in the duodenum of piglets. Therefore, calcium-butyrate combined with tannin could be a part of an alternative program to reduce the use of antimicrobials in the diet of weaned piglets. Plasma membrane Ca^2+ ATPases are P-type pumps imortant for intraceooular Ca^2+ homeostasis. The extreme C termini of alternatively apliced "b"-type Ca^2+ pump isoforms resemble those of K^+ channels and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunita that interact with channel-coustering proteins of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase(MAGUK)family via PDZ domains. Yeast two-hybrid assays demostrated strong interaction of Ca^2+ pump 4b with the PDZ1+2 domains of serveral mammalian MAGUKs. Pump 4b and PSD-95 could be co-immunoprecipitated from COS-7 cells overexpressing these proteins. Surface plasmon resonance revealed that a C-terminal pump 4b peptide interacted with the PDZ1+2 domains of hDlg with manomolar affinity(K_D=1.6nM), whereas binding to PDZ3 was in the micromolar range(K_D=1.2μM). In contrast, the corresponding C-terminal petide of Ca^2+ pump 2b interacted weakly with PDZ1+2 and not at all with PDZ3 of hDlg. Ca^2+ pump 4b bound strongly to PDZ1+2+3 of hDlg on filter assays, whereas isoform 2b bound weakly, and the splice variants 2a and 4a failed to bind. Together, these data demostrate a direct physical binding of Ca^2+ pump isoform 4b to MAGUKs via their splicing within the family of plasma membrane Ca^2+ pumps. Alternative splicing may ditate their specific interaction with PDZ domain-containing proteins, potentially influencing their localization and incorporation into functional multiprotein complexes at the plasma membrane.
RECENT GALAXY MERGERS AND RESIDUAL STAR FORMATION OF RED SEQUENCE GALAXIES IN GALAXY CLUSTERS

<P>This study explored the Galaxy Evolution Explorer ultraviolet (UV) properties of optical red sequence galaxies in four rich Abell clusters at z <= 0.1. In particular, we tried to find a hint of merger-induced recent star formation (RSF) in red sequence galaxies. Using the NUV - r' colors of the galaxies, RSF fractions were derived based on various criteria for post-merger galaxies and normal galaxies. Following k-correction, about 36% of the post-merger galaxies were classified as RSF galaxies with a conservative criterion (NUV - r' <= 5), and that number was doubled (similar to 72%) when using a generous criterion (NUV - r' <= 5.4). The trend was the same when we restricted the sample to galaxies within 0.5 x R-200. Post-merger galaxies with strong UV emission showed more violent, asymmetric features in the deep optical images. The RSF fractions did not show any trend along the clustocentric distance within R-200. We performed a Dressler-Shectman test to check whether the RSF galaxies had any correlation with the substructures in the galaxy clusters. Within R-200 of each cluster, the RSF galaxies did not appear to be preferentially related to the clusters' substructures. Our results suggested that only 30% of RSF red sequence galaxies show morphological hints of recent galaxy mergers. This implies that internal processes (e.g., stellar mass loss or hot gas cooling) for the supply of cold gas to early-type galaxies may play a significant role in the residual star formation of early-type galaxies at a recent epoch.</P>

<P>Aims. In the effort to understand the link between the structure of galaxy clusters and their galaxy populations, we focus on MACSJ1206.20847at z ~ 0.44 and probe its substructure in the projected phase space through the spectrophotometric properties of a large number of galaxies from the CLASHVLT survey. Methods. Our analysis is mainly based on an extensive spectroscopic dataset of 445 member galaxies, mostly acquired with VIMOS at VLT as part of our ESO Large Programme, sampling the cluster out to a radius ~2R200 (4 h70−1Mpc). We classify 412 galaxies as passive, with strong Hδ absorption (red and blue galaxies), and with emission lines from weak to very strong. A number of tests for substructure detection are applied to analyze the galaxy distribution in the velocity space, in 2D space, and in 3D projected phase-space. Results. Studied in its entirety, the cluster appears as a large-scale relaxed system with a few secondary, minor overdensities in 2D distribution. We detect no velocity gradients or evidence of deviations in local mean velocities. The main feature is the WNW-ESE elongation. The analysis of galaxy populations per spectral class highlights a more complex scenario. The passive galaxies and red strong Hδ galaxies trace the cluster center and the WNWESE elongated structure. The red strong Hδ galaxies also mark a secondary, dense peak ~2h70−1 Mpcat ESE. The emission line galaxies cluster in several loose structures, mostly outside R200. Two of these structures are also detected through our 3D analysis. The observational scenario agrees with MACS J1206.20847 having WNWESE as the direction of the main cluster accretion, traced by passive galaxies and red strong Hδ galaxies. The red strong Hδ galaxies, interpreted as poststarburst galaxies, date a likely important event 12 Gyr before the epoch of observation. The emission line galaxies trace a secondary, ongoing infall where groups are accreted along several directions.</P>
