Instuments in the Hand of God : Missionary Women in Malaya, 1815-45
Christine DORAN Ewha Womans University Press 2004 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.10 No.1
Most previous research on female missionaries in the Asia-Pacific region has dealt with the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and/or has concentrated on American women. In contrast, this article explores the motives and experiences of British women who were actively involved in mission stations in the Straits Settlements in Malaya, working under the auspices of the London Missionary Society; and it examines the early period of missionary activity in the region, from 1815 to 1845. The paper focuses on a key, but previously neglected issue: the women's motives for becoming involved in missionary endeavor. These women created a notional space for themselves as mission workers, firstly by means of ideas about being useful instruments in God's work; and secondly by asserting a direct relationship with their God, unmediated by male missionaries or the officials of the missionary society. This conceptual strategy gave them scope for maneuver within gendered power structures and thus some degree of social and political leverage.
Behind the Lines : Women in the History and Literature of the Philippine Revolution
DORAN, Christine Asian Center Women's Studies Korean Women's Instit 2001 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.7 No.3
This paper examines women's participation in the Revolution of 1896-1902 in the Philippines, and considers how women have been represented in both histories of the rebellion and in literature. The paper begins by outlining women's involvement in this process and noting their absence from the mainstream histories of the revolution. Nevertheless, knowledge of women's contributions has been preserved in more marginal texts, and efforts have recently begun to construct revisionist histories, including those of women. The second part of the paper analyzes depictions of revolutionary women in recent literature in the Philippines. Although limited in their representations of women, some of these works indicate a reassessment of the interrelations between gender and the revolutionary ethos, which is still central to the national psyche. Although revolutionary women remain virtually invisible in most histories and have received little recognition in recent literature, there are signs of change in both these areas of cultural production.
Soil-pile interaction effects in wharf structures under lateral loads
Doran, Bilge,Seckin, Aytug Techno-Press 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.51 No.2
Wharfs are essential to shipping and support very large gravity loads on both a short-term and long-term basis which cause quite large seismic internal forces. Therefore, these structures are vulnerable to seismic activities. As they are supported on vertical and/or batter piles, soil-pile interaction effects under earthquake events have a great importance in seismic resistance which is not yet fully understood. Seismic design codes have become more stringent and suggest the use of new design methods, such as Performance Based Design principles. According to Turkish Code for Coastal and Port Structures (TCCS 2008), the interaction between soil and pile should somehow be considered in the nonlinear analysis in an accurate manner. This study aims to explore the lateral load carrying capacity of recently designed wharf structures considering soil-pile interaction effects for different soil conditions. For this purpose, nonlinear structure analysis according to TCCS (2008) has been performed comparing simplified and detailed modeling results.
The Helix-Loop-Helix Factors Id3 and E47 Are Novel Regulators of Adiponectin

Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived cytokine with beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and the development of atherosclerosis. Id3 is a helix-loop-helix factor that binds to E-proteins such as E47 and inhibits their binding to DNA. Although the helix-loop-helix factor sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP)-1c is a known activator of adiponectin transcription, this study provides the first evidence of a role for Id3 and E47 in adiponectin expression. Decreased Id3 in differentiating adipocytes correlates with increased adiponectin expression and forced expression of Id3 inhibits adiponectin expression. Moreover, Id3-null mice have increased adiponectin expression in visceral fat tissue and in serum. We demonstrate that E47 potentiates SREBP-1c-mediated adiponectin promoter activation and that Id3 can dose-dependently inhibit this action via interaction with E47. Mutation of a consensus E47 binding site results in nearly complete loss of promoter activation. Furthermore, we demonstrate E47 binding to the endogenous adiponectin promoter both in vitro and in vivo by chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis. Binding is not detected in undifferentiated cells which express Id3 but peaks during differentiation in parallel with Id3 decline. This promoter binding can be completely abolished by the overexpression of Id3 and is enhanced in adipose tissue null for Id3. These data establish Id3 and E47 as novel regulators of SREBP-1c-mediated adiponectin expression in differentiating adipocytes and provide evidence that Id3 regulates adiponectin expression in vivo.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is an antibiotic used for the treatment or prophylaxis of Pneumocystis pneumonia and other infectious conditions. Sulfonamide derivatives have been reported to cause delayed hypersensitivity reactions, resulting in switch to less effective second-line antibiotics. Although desensitization is traditionally known to be effective in patients with imme¬diate hypersensitivity, it is also applied to the treatment of delayed hypersensitivity in recent years. A 66-year-old female who had a history of repeated TMP-SMX-induced delayed hypersensitivity presenting as whole body rashes needed to take prophylactic dose of TMP-SMX (80/400 mg daily) before initiation of chemotherapy for multiple myeloma. Intravenous rapid desensitization was per¬formed by using a 11-step, 4-bottle protocol from 1:1,000 to 1:1 solution for 3 hours to reach the target dose for prophylaxis. After successful rapid desensitization of TMP-SMX, 1-month prophylaxis was completed without any complications until the patient re-covered normal immunity. We herein reported a case of delayed hypersensitivity reaction to TMP-SMX in an about-to-be immuno¬compromised host with planned chemotherapy who successfully completed 1-month prophylaxis with the drug without any com¬plications through rapid desensitization.(Allergy Asthma Respir Dis 2015;3:155-158)

This paper comparatively analyses the discursive construction of women’s societal roles in twoonline Korean English language newspapers. It addresses the question; how are women repre-sented in English language ‘broadsheet’ online news journals of record in South Korea; and howdo those representations of women maintain the social conditions which sustain gender inequal-ities? Linguistic data was gathered from The Korea Herald and the Times of Korea over a twoday period based upon headlines that had a direct reference to ‘women’. A Critical DiscourseAnalysis approach (CDA) was used drawing on various theories of discourse analysis, pragmat-ics, and cognition. The findings pointed to an ideological predisposition towards representingwomen in traditional roles in line with a socio-cognitive legacy of Confucian values. There wasalso a notable confusion in the language which reflects the discord between these Confucianvalues and modern globalised values
