This study examines whether environmental disclosure and environmental performance variables express distinct constructs using canonical correlation analysis technique and analyses secondary data in Cong and Freedman (2011) article as a case example. The analysis find that the environmental performance variables express different dimensions of the performance construct, and the variables differ in their expression of the construct. This study applies canonical correlation analysis to the published Cong and Freedman (2011) article using the statistical mean, standard deviation, and the correlation table published in that article and examined using SPSS syntax outlined by Abeysekera (2014) article. The canonical correlation results indicated that MHPR and RRR variables express another dimension of the environmental performance construct. The MHPR variable contributed very little in 2003 and 2005 but contributed sufficiently in the 2004 year to the performance construct. Overall, the canonical correlation analysis of the data published by Cong and Freedman (2011) revealed that the environmental disclosure variable (SCORE) expresses a different construct from the environmental performance variable (PBR). PBR is the most representative variable of the environmental performance construct.
Cryophotolysis of a caged oxygen compound for use in low temperature biological studies

Mechanistic investigations of biological enzymatic processes require controlled initiation and monitoring of catalytic reactions. A well-known technique to trap and observe reaction intermediates building up along a reaction pathway is the use of low temperature conditions. Here, we report a kinetically competent system for the release of molecular oxygen at cryogenic temperature, using a cobalt-based caged oxygen molecule, (${\mu}$-peroxo)(${\mu}$-hydroxo)bis[bis(bipyridyl)cobalt(III)] nitrate. Cryophotolysis of this compound was induced using 266 nm laser light and monitored by absorption microspectrophotometry. Furthermore, to verify that photo-fragmentation was accompanied by release of the active caged molecule, the production of dioxygen during cryophotolysis was directly visualized. This work lays the foundations for the use of low temperature reaction triggering as a tool to prolong the lifetime of normally unstable intermediate states in oxygen-dependant enzymes.

Background: Nanoparticles of gold and silver are offering revolutionary changes in the field of cancer therapy. N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes possess diverse biological activities and are being investigated as potential chemotherapeutic agents. The purpose of this study was to examine the cytotoxicity and possible mechanisms of action of two types of newly synthesized nanofiber composites containing BIAN N-heterocyclic gold carbene complexes in two types of human cancer cells, namely breast cancer (MCF7) and liver cancer (HepG2) cells and also in normal human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293). Materials and Methods: Cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT cell viability assay and oxidative stress by checking the total glutathione level. Results: Both compounds affected the cell survival of the tested cell lines at very low concentrations (IC50 values in the micro molar range) as compared to a well-known anti-cancer drug, 5 fluorouracil. A 60-80% depletion in total glutathione level was detected in treated cells. Conclusions: Reduction in total glutathione level is one of the biochemical pathways for the induction of oxidative stress which in turn could be a possible mechanism of action by which these compounds induce cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines. The in vitro toxicity towards cancer cells found here means that these molecules could be potential anticancer candidates.
