      • Waikoropupu Springs

Cody, Ashley The Speleological Society 1998 Journal of the speleological society of korea Vol.7 No.2

This article is a brief study of some properties of Pupu Springs together with comparative comments on nearby rivers and resurgences. The information presented was collected by several people over the period from January 1970 until November 1971, and all analyses were made within a laboratory. “Waikoropupu” is a Maori name meaning “where water bubbles up through a throat.” However the name is more commonly simply 'Pupu Springs. Location is about 7km from Takaka; the outflow from the Springs flowing into the Takaka River at a point within 2km of the town. Grid reference for the Springs is: N.Z.M.S. I, Takaka, S8 (1968) 170819.(omitted)

Pten gene deletion in intestinal epithelial cells enhances susceptibility to Salmonella Typhimurium infection in mice

        Cody Howe,Jonathon Mitchell,Su Jin Kim,Eunok Im,Sang Hoon Rhee 한국미생물학회 2019 The journal of microbiology Vol.57 No.11

Although phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is typically considered a tumor-suppressor gene, it was recently suggested that PTEN regulates TLR5-induced immune and inflammatory responses in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), suggesting an immunomodulatory function of PTEN in the gut. However, this alternative function of PTEN has not yet been evaluated in an in vivo context of protection against enteropathogenic bacteria. To address this, we utilized IECrestricted Pten knockout (PtenΔIEC/ΔIEC) and littermate Pten+/+ mice. These mice were subjected to the streptomycin-pretreated mouse model of Salmonella infection, and subsequently given an oral gavage of a low inoculum (2 × 104 CFU) of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). This bacterial infection not only increased the mortality of PtenΔIEC/ΔIEC mice compared to Pten+/+ mice, but also induced deleterious gastrointestinal inflammation in PtenΔIEC/ΔIEC mice manifested by massive histological damage to the intestinal mucosa. S. Typhimurium infection upregulated pro-inflammatory cytokine production in the intestine of PtenΔIEC/ΔIEC mice compared to controls. Furthermore, bacterial loads were greatly increased in the liver, mesenteric lymph node, and spleen of PtenΔIEC/ΔIEC mice compared to controls. Together, these results suggest that IEC-restricted Pten deficiency renders the host greatly susceptible to Salmonella infection and support an immuneregulatory role of PTEN in the gut.

EXCHANGE CONTROLS , POLITICAL RISK AND THE EUROCURRENCY MARKEY : NEW EVIDENCE FROM TESTS OF COVERED INTEREST RATE PARITY

CODY, BRIAN J. 한국국제경제학회 1990 International Economic Journal Vol.4 No.2

This study employs daily data to examine the effects on Eurocurrency and onshore returns of the May 21, 1981 imposition of exchange controls by French President Mitterand. Prior to this time, transaction costs explain the average onshore deviations from covered parity; however, these averages ignore short-lived political risk premia which emerged just before the imposition of controls. As expected, there is no evidence of political risk on Eurocurrency markets. Yet when exchange controls were in effect, premia in excess of transaction costs surfaced on nonfranc Eurocurrency deposits at the time of devaluations of the franc within the EMS.

Anti-neoplastic cytotoxicity by complementary simultaneous selective “targeted” delivery for pulmonary adenocarcinoma: fludarabine-(5′-phosphoramidate)-[anti-IGF-1R] in dual-combination with dexamethasone-(C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti-EGFR]

        Cody P. Coyne,Lakshmi Narayanan 한국약제학회 2019 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.49 No.1

Selective “targeted” delivery of chemotherapeutic agents represents a molecular strategy for achieving enhanced margins-ofsafety and greater potency compared to conventional small-molecular weight chemotherapeutics. Greater margins-of-safety are possible because extensive un-intentional diffusion of therapeutics across intact cell membranes of normal healthy cells residing within tissues and organ systems is minimized or avoided. Simultaneous, independent “targeted” delivery of one or more therapeutics at multiple sites on the external surface membrane of neoplastic cells has not been described extensively. Fludarabine-(5′-phosphoramidate)-[anti-IGF-1R] and dexamethasone-(C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti-EGFR] were synthesized by reacting fludarabine or dexamethasone-C21-monophosphate with a carbodiimide reagent and imidazole for synthesis of covalent fludarabine-(5′-phosphoramidate)-[anti-IGF-1R] and dexamethasone-(C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti- EGFR] immunopharmaceuticals. The pharmaceutical molar-incorporation-indexes for fludarabine-(C5-phosphoramidate)- [anti-IGF-1R] and dexamethasone-(C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti-EGFR] were 3.67:1 and 6.95:1 respectively. Simultaneous dual-combination selective “targeted” delivery with fludarabine-(5′-phosphoramidate)-[anti-IGF-1R] with dexamethasone-( C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti-EGFR] produced the most profound enhancement in anti-neoplastic cytotoxitity at the pharmaceutical-equivalent concentations of 10− 9 M (14.7% ± 0.80 SE) and 10− 8 M (54.0% ± 0.9 SE) respectively. Simultaneous dual “targeted” anti-neoplastic cytotoxicity can potentially be evoked ex-vivo and in-vivo with fludarabine- (5′-phosphoramidate)-[anti-IGF-1R] and dexamethasone-(C21-phosphoramidate)-[anti-EGFR] through the synergistic and additive efficacy achieved through the combined mechanisms-of-actions associated with; (1) covalently bound therapeutic moieties; (2) anti-trophic receptor IgG-immunoglobulin; and (3) activation of three host immune responses.

Time Dependent Heat Transfer of Proliferation Resistant Plutonium

        Cody Lloyd,Ravi Hadimani,Braden Goddard 한국원자력학회 2019 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.51 No.2

Increasing proliferation resistance of plutonium by way of increased 238Pu content is of interest to thenuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards community. Considering the high alpha decay heatof 238Pu, increasing the isotopic fraction leads to a noticeably higher amount of heat generation withinthe plutonium. High heat generation is especially unattractive in the scenario of weaponization. Uponweaponization of the plutonium, the plutonium may generate enough heat to elevate the temperature inthe high explosives to above its self-explosion temperature, rendering the weapon useless. In addition, elevated temperatures will cause thermal expansion in the components of a nuclear explosive devicethat may produce thermal stresses high enough to produce failure in the materials, reducing theeffectiveness of the weapon. Understanding the technical limit of 238Pu required to reduce the possibilityof weaponization is key to reducing the current limit on safeguarded plutonium (greater than 80 at. %238Pu). The plutonium vector evaluated in this study was found by simulating public information onLightbridge’s fuel design for pressurized water reactors. This study explores the temperature profile andmaximum stress within a simple (first generation design) hypothetical nuclear explosive device of fourunique scenarios over time. Analyzing the transient development of both the temperature profile andmaximum stress not only establishes a technical limit on the 238Pu content, but also establishes a timelimit for which each scenario would be useable.

Filtering through the role of NRF3 in kidney disease

        Cody J. Schmidlin,Matthew B. Dodson,Donna D. Zhang 대한약학회 2020 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.43 No.3

Kidney disease affects * 10% of the populationworldwide, resulting in millions of deaths each year. Mechanistically, oxidative stress is a major driver of variouskidney diseases, and promotes the progression fromacute to chronic injury, as well as renal cancer development. NRF2, the master regulator of redox balance, hasbeen shown to protect against kidney disease through itsnegation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, many kidney diseases exhibit high levels of ROS as a resultof decreased NRF2 protein levels and transcriptionalactivity. Many studies have tested the strategy of usingNRF2 inducing compounds to alleviate ROS to prevent orslow down the progression of kidney diseases. Oppositely,in specific subsets of renal cancer, NRF2 is constitutivelyactivated and contributes to tumor burden and overall poorprognosis; therefore, there has been a recent interest instudies investigating the benefits of NRF2 inhibition. Inthis review, we summarize recent literature investigatingthe role of NRF2 and oxidative stress in various kidneydiseases, and how pharmacological modification of NRF2signaling could play a protective role.

Determining the incidence and risk factors for short-term complications following distal biceps tendon repair

        Cody Goedderz,Mark A. Plantz,Erik B. Gerlach,Nicholas C. Arpey,Peter R. Swiatek,Colin K. Cantrell,Michael A. Terry,Vehniah K. Tjong 대한견주관절학회 2022 대한견주관절의학회지 Vol.25 No.1

Background: Distal biceps rupture is a relatively uncommon injury that can significantly affect quality of life. Early complications following biceps tendon repair are not well described in the literature. This study utilizes a national surgical database to determine the incidence of and predictors for short-term complications following distal biceps tendon repair. Methods: The American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was used to identify patients undergoing distal biceps repair between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2017. Patient demographic variables of sex, age, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists class, functional status, and several comorbidities were collected for each patient, along with 30-day postoperative complications. Binary logistic regression was used to calculate risk ratios for these complications using patient predictor variables. Results: Early postoperative surgical complications (0.5%)—which were mostly infections (0.4%)—and medical complications (0.3%) were rare. A readmission risk factor was diabetes (risk ratio [RR], 4.238; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.180–15.218). Non-home discharge risk factors were smoking (RR, 3.006; 95% CI, 1.123–8.044) and ≥60 years of age (RR, 4.150; 95% CI, 1.611– 10.686). Maleness was protective for medical complications (RR, 0.024; 95% CI, 0.005–0.126). Surgical complication risk factors were obese class II (RR, 4.120; 95% CI, 1.123–15.120), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; RR, 21.981; 95% CI, 3.719–129.924), and inpatient surgery (RR, 8.606; 95% CI, 2.266–32.689). Conclusions: Complication rates after distal biceps repair are low. Various patient demographics, medical comorbidities, and surgical factors were all predictive of short-term complications.

      • Backpackers' Virtual Mobility

        Cody Paris,Victor Teye 세계문화관광학회 2008 Conference Proceedings Vol.9 No.0

Mobility is inherently part of the backpacker phenomenon. In the past the mobility has been physical, but recent innovations in communication technology, in particular online social communities, have added a virtual component to the mobility of backpackers. This study explores the complex sociality backpackers now maintain by examining the convergence of the internet and communication technologies and physical travel before, during, and after backpackers' trips. The results of the study suggest that backpackers now maintain a complex sociality made up of face to face interactions, virtual interactions, and co-presence. Backpackers have fully adapted the new communication tools into their travel activities.

      • Canterbury Hill Cave, Collingwood

Cody, Ashley The Speleological Society 1998 Journal of the speleological society of korea Vol.7 No.2

This is but a brief description of a cave which, although well known to local inhabitants, appears to be unknown to the N.Z.S.S. It is reputed to be one of several caves in this region, but we have so far been unable to continue our prospecting here as fully as is needed. The cave is in no way unique nor of an outstanding nature; being within an isolated remnant of a much younger limestone which appears to have once extensively overlain the old Paleozoic basement rocks of the Aorere valley region. It seems probable that it is in the same limestone as the well-known Te Anaroa tourist cave, at Rockville near Collingwood, and that of the Brown River caves south of Bainham.(omitted)
