A case of chronic myeloid leukemia in a diagnostic radiographer

Background: Occupational radiation exposure causes certain types of cancer, specifically hematopoietic diseases like leukemia. In Korea, radiation exposure is monitored and recorded by law, and guidelines for compensation of radiation-related diseases were implemented in 2001. However, thus far, no occupation-related disease was approved for compensation under these guidelines. Here, we report the first case of radiation-related disease approved by the compensation committee of the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service, based on the probability of causation. Case presentation: A 45-year-old man complained of chronic fatigue and myalgia for several days. He was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. The patient was a diagnostic radiographer at a diagnostic radiation department and was exposed to ionizing radiation for 21 years before chronic myeloid leukemia was diagnosed. His job involved taking simple radiographs, computed tomography scans, and measuring bone marrow density. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first approved case report using quantitative assessment of radiation. More approved cases are expected based on objective radiation exposure data and the probability of causation. We need to find a resolution to the ongoing demands for appropriate compensation and improvements to the environment at radiation workplaces.

Generally, a balance shaft for 4 cylinder diesel engine is an important component for the compensation of the inertia force due to dynamic unbalance at driving status. But in domestic vehicle industry, its development technique is limited to only manufacturing skills instead of design techniques. Therefore, on this study in order to present the basic design technique the dynamic characteristics of balance shaft are analysed using module experiments which are the vibration test and the driving torque test. Also the analytical model for multi-body dynamics analysis is composed. The composed analytical model is verified by comparison with the result of module experiments.

자동차부품의 내구품질은 자동차의 품질을 결정하는 중요한 요소 중의 하나로 내구품질이 우수한 자동차를 위해서는 기술 확보가 필요하다. 국산 자동차에 대한 초기품질은 세계 최고 수준에 이르고 있지만, 내구성능은 업계 평균이하 수준에 머무르고 있는 실정이어서 이에 대한 대책 마련이 시급하다. 또한 새시부품 및 모듈의 내구성능 향상은 자동차 전체의 내구성능 향상을 위해 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다. 본 고에서는 새시코너모듈의 내구성능 향상을 위한 간략한 평가기술 있는 군산대학교 자동차부품 기술혁신센터(KATIC)의 다축내구시험기 및 시험평가 사례를 기술하였다. 자동차 부품 내구성능평가 방법에 관련 장비들은 향후 자동차부품 및 일반기계부품 개발업체에서 잘 활용할 수 있을 것이다. Chassis corner module vibration durability test technology using multi-axial road simulator is presented. To study the chassis corner module vibration durability test, it requires that test equipments, test procedures and typical technology are developed. In this paper, some test technology for chassis corner module test are described. Also, the test equipment, rig and test procedure are introduced and test is performed using multi-axial road simulator installed Kunsan National University Automotive Technology Innovation Center(KATIC). Test results of chassis corner module are satisfied with the development specification required High fidelity and high performance testing systems, for example, multi-axial simulation table, linear and rotary actuator, etc., are equiped in the KATIC.

자동차부품의 내구성능은 중요한 성능 중의 하나로 세계 최고수준의 자동차를 만들기 위해서는 반드시 확보해야 할 기술이다. 국산 자동차에 대한 초기품질은 세계 최고 수준에 이르고 있지만, 내구성능은 최하위권에 머무르고 있는 실정이어서 이에 대한 대책 마련이 시급하다. 또한 세시부품 및 모듈의 내구성능 향상은 자동차 전체의 내구성능 향상을 위해 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다. 본 고에서는 자동차 부품 및 모듈의 내구성능 향상을 위한 평가 과정과 함께 부품 내구성능 평가장비를 보유하고 관련 부품의 내구성능을 평가하고 있는 군산대학교 자동차부품기술혁신센터(KATIC)의 시험평가장비 및 사례를 기술하였다. 자동차 부품 내구성능평가 방법과 관련 장비들은 향후 자동차부품 및 일반기계부품 개발업체에서 잘 활용할 수 있을 것이다. In this article, 6 Axis Vibration durability test technology for automotive components is presented. Test equipments and procedures which used in Kunsan National University Automotive Technology Innovation Center(KATIC) are introduced. High fidelity and high performance testing systems, for examples, chassis corner module road simulator, multi-axis simulation table, linear and rotary actuator, etc., are equiped in the center. Especially MAST for 6 Axis vibration durability test is introduced. MAST test procedure and examples is presented.
A case of azoospermia in a non-destructive testing worker exposed to radiation

Background: Interest in radiation-related health problems has been growing with the increase in the number of workers in radiation-related jobs. Although an occupational level of radiation exposure would not likely cause azoospermia, several studies have reported the relation between radiation exposure and azoospermia after accidental or therapeutic radiation exposure. We describe a case of azoospermia in a non-destructive testing (NDT) worker exposed to radiation and discuss the problems of the related monitoring system. Case presentation: A 39-year-old man who was childless after 8 years of marriage was diagnosed with azoospermia through medical evaluations, including testicular biopsy. He did not have any abnormal findings on biochemical evaluations, other risk factors, or evidence of congenital azoospermia. He had been working in an NDT facility from 2005 to 2013, attaching and arranging gamma-ray films on the structures and inner spaces of ships. The patient’s thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) badge recorded an exposure level of 0.01781 Gy for 80 months, whereas results of his florescence in situ hybridization (FISH) translocation assay showed an exposure level of up to 1.926 Gy of cumulative radiation, which was sufficient to cause azoospermia. Thus, we concluded that his azoospermia was caused by occupational radiation exposure. Conclusion: The difference between the exposure dose records measured through TLD badge and the actual exposure dose implies that the monitor used by the NDT worker did not work properly, and such a difference could threaten the health and safety of workers. Thus, to protect the safety and health of NDT workers, education of workers and strengthening of law enforcement are required to ensure that regulations are strictly followed, and if necessary, random sampling of NDT workers using a cytogenetic dosimeter, such as FISH, should be considered.

Slam testing of a door module is one of the most significant fatigue-related testing process to meet the qualified performance guideline that is stipulated by major car makers. And every testing procedure of the slam testing is done as slamming the moving part of a door module by hydraulic actuators in practice. Current testing situation is required considerable efforts on the way to prepare the slam testing and even more, even a single specimen result sacrifices at least two weeks or more physically. In this paper, a accelerated similarity testing methodology of a door module is proposed using vibration test equipment instead of the honest testing procedure, that is purely slamming the target system repeatedly up to a failure mode. The response of a door plate module during slam testing indicates that fundamental resonance behaviors of the specimen accumulates the fatigue damage on hot spot of the door plate module. So, The accelerated similarity alternatives of the slam testing is proposed by the block cycle excitation of which spectrum is consisted of resonance frequencies of a target system. Also, the calibration of block cycle testing is conducted through the comprehend the fact of failure mode obtained by the multi-axial vibration testing.
A Case of Tracheal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in a Worker Exposed to Rubber Fumes

Background: Primary tracheal tumors occur infrequently, accounting for less than 0.1% of all tumors. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the second most common type of malignancy of the trachea after squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Little has been reported on the risk factors for tracheal ACC. The purpose of this study is to describe a case of tracheal ACC in a patient who had been exposed to rubber fumes, and to review the relationship between tracheal ACC and rubber fumes. Case report: A 48-year-old man who had been experiencing aggravation of dyspnea for several months was diagnosed as having ACC of the trachea on the basis of a pathologic examination of a biopsy specimen obtained via laser microscopy-guided resection. The patient had been exposed to rubber fumes for 10 years at a tire manufacturing factory where he worked until ACC was diagnosed. His job involved preheating and changing rubber molds during the curing process. Conclusion: ACC of both the trachea and the salivary glands show very similar patterns with regard to histopathology and epidemiology and are therefore assumed to have a common etiology. Rubber manufacturing is an occupational risk factor for the development of salivary gland tumors. Further, rubber fumes have been reported to be mutagenic. The exposure level to rubber fumes during the curing process at the patient’s workplace was estimated to be close to or higher than British Occupational Exposure Limits. Therefore, tracheal ACC in this case might have been influenced by occupational exposure to rubber fumes.
