      • Development of new Drugs from Natural extracts for the treatment of Periodontal Disease

        Chung, Chong-Pyoung 경희대학교 동서의학연구소 1999 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON EAST-WEST MEDICINE Vol.1999 No.1

Chong-Pyoung Chung Dept.of Periodontology, College of Dentistry, Seoul National Universtiy, Seoul, Korea. Development of new Drugs from Natural extracts for the treatment of periodontal Disease. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 65-75, 1999. -Over the past decades, interesting progress has been made about the development of new drugs from natural extracts for the treatment of periodontal disease. Among many research directions regarding natural extracts, antimicrobial and antiinflammatory function on these have been investigated to evaluate the possibility of development of new drugs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the screening and tracking of a strong candidate for new drugs from several natural extracts for treatment of periodontal disease. The antimicrobial and antiinflammatory effects on Magnolia cortex and several natural extracts were evaluated. Their antimicrobial activity against serveral periodontopathic microflora including P. gingivalis, P. intermedis, As, etc,and also whether these agents showed cell cytotoxic effect, anticollagenolytic activity and inhibition of cytokine production on the gingival fibroblast was looked into. Among several natural extracts, Magnolia cortex were the strongest to the antimicrobial activity to several periodontopathic microflora. But, Magnolia cortex was shown to moderate form of cell cytotoxicity for gingival fibroblasts compared with other natural etracts. To investigate the anticollagenolytic and inhibitory effects on IL-1 and PGE2 production, Magnolia cortex, Zizyphus fructus and several extracts were tested with monocyte, crude collagenase, and human gingival fibroblast. Among the several natural extracts studied, Zizypus fructus was the strongest anticollagenolytic activity and also highly effective in inhibiting IL-1 and PGE2 production compared with other natural extracts. And its effects were comparable to that of Prednisolone. Magnolia cortex and Zizypus fructus showed synergistic strong antimicrobial, highly anticollagenolytic effect and strong inhibition of IL-1βand PGE2 production without any antagonistic effects. To evaluate the regenerative effects of several natural extracts including safflower extract in vitro, and in vivo, their stimulatory effects on PDL fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and rat calvarial defect were investigated. Magnolia cortex and safflower extracts significantly stimulated and increased the growth and survival rate of osteoblasts, PDL fibroblasts, and also significantly increased new bone formation in rat calvarial defect. In vivo, experimental studies on the regenerative effects of the mixture of Magnolia cortex with Safflower extract and Magnolia cortex with Zizypus fructus extract were performed on experimental periodontitis of beagle dogs. Magnolia cortex with safflower extract and Magnolia cortex with Zizypus fructus were highly effective on the inhibition of inflammation and disease progression of periodontal disease. These results suggested that Magnolia cortex and several related natural extracts might be used to prevent, inhibit periodontal disease progression.

Exploring Effective Translation Activities at College Level with Reference to Reading Aloud: A Case Study

        Chong,Cinthia Myonghui 한국통번역교육학회 2019 통번역교육연구 Vol.17 No.3

The current study aims to apply and examine a reading aloud activity as an effective and efficient translation activity. This study utilized repeated reading aloud and self-voice recordings to practice a target language. The reading aloud activity allowed the participants to experience success repeatedly so that they could: (i) gain perspective on the overall progress that they made during the repeated reading aloud activities and voice-recordings, and (ii) gain an awareness of their own language skills by rating themselves from an objective standpoint to some degree. Considering the data results, it can be assumed that reading aloud activity may provide translation learners with regular experiences of success and would help to increase their self-confidence to use the target language. Overall, the reading aloud activity seemed to be an effective method for translation learners, for the following purposes: (i) to practice a target language, (ii) to increase language skills of the target language, and (iii) to enhance self-confidence in using the target language.

A Case Study on Reading Aloud Using English TV News

        Chong,Cinthia M 영상영어교육학회 2021 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.22 No.1

This study deals with the effectiveness of reading aloud using English TV news to increase the number of opportunities and improve self-confidence in producing English utterances for EFL learners. Reading aloud using English TV news contents was adopted to induce a certain number of English utterances, and self-voice recording via smartphones was conducted to provide an objective perspective on learners’ progress during the activity. The data from the pre- and post-survey questionnaires show that the reading-aloud activity using English TV news during a single semester increased EFL learners’ self-confidence in producing English utterances. Post-survey results indicate respective increases of 39 percent, 29 percent, and 20 percent in reading a text aloud, delivering a presentation, and speaking in comparison to presurvey results. Furthermore, learners with no overseas English learning experience showed significantly more positive reactions toward the reading-aloud activity than those with overseas English learning experience. The effectiveness is noticeable as it increases self-confidence to a level close to that of learners with overseas learning experience. This study provides insights into reading aloud activity using English TV news on EFL learners with no overseas learning experience and on their selfconfidence in practicing English speaking skills.

        Verb-Raising and Case-Agreement

Yu, Chong Taek 대한언어학회 1993 언어학 Vol.1 No.-

Chong-Taek Yu(1993). Verb-Rasing and Case-Agreement. Linguistics. Vol 1. This paper follows the Johnson's (1989) assumption that verbal inflection is always mediated by verb raising. All the verb heads-main verb, modal, be/have and participle heads-raise to the inflectional head positions and amalgamate with the fusible affixes. While the verb heads undergo a head-to-head movement, VP-internal subject(SU) and object(OB) raise to the Spec positions of AgrP by means of the Mutually Agreement-resisting Properties(MAP). This paper assumes that MAP makes SU and OB skip over the minimal domain. The raising SU and OB are always assigned agreement Case(AC). Even Genitive NP and indirect object(10) in the double object construction are also assigned AC, but direct object(DO) in it and prepositional object are assigned governed Case(GC). Besides, this paper proposes that the Stowell's (1981) CRP be refined in relation to Case agreement.

The Deletion of Q-Feature of C

        Yu, Chong-Taek 대한언어학회 1999 언어학 Vol.7 No.2

Yu, Chong-Taek. 1999. The Deletion of Q-Feature of C. Linguistics 7-2, 143-162. The Q-feature of C checks the Q-feature of a non-wh- or (a) wh-phrase(s) through the Attract or Agree in syntax, deleting there right after the new whole syntactic structure was copied into phonology. The Q-feature of a non-wh-phrase is covertly Attracted from inner C to outer C in C^omax. All the non-wh- or wh-phrases move covertly or overtly to C or Spec-CP for checking their Q-features. An EQ seems to have double Specs-CP-inner Spec and outer Spec. English never permits more than one lexical wh-phrase in the same CP. Nevertheless, the Q-feature of C can Attract the Q-features of multiple wh-phrases. (Howon University)

Quantitative comparison of mRNA expression of glucosyltransferase(GTF) between xylitol-resistant(X^(R)) and xylitol-sensitive(X^(s)) mutans streptococci

        Kim, Chong-Chul,Lee, Mi-Na,Kim, Young-Jae,Lee, Sung-Hoon 大韓小兒齒科學會 2006 大韓小兒齒科學會誌 Vol.33 No.1

Since the long-term exposure of mutans streptococci to xylitol is known to select for xylitol-resistant(X^(R)) natural mutants, the occurrence and survival of such X^(R) strains were performed in batch culture methods. The aim of the study was to compare the differentiation and quantification of mRNA expression of the gtf genes of X^(R) and X^(S) mutans streptococci. Using a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, the expression of each gtf was determined. In X^(R) strains, the relative levels of transcription of gtfB and gtfC were decreased while that of gtfD was increased, suggesting the presence of independent promoters. It also suggested that mutation related to production of glucosyltransferase occurred under the exposure of xylitol could explain the caries-preventive mechanisms of xylitol.
