      • Arginine-Rich Manganese Silicate Nanobubbles as a Ferroptosis-Inducing Agent for Tumor-Targeted Theranostics

        Wang, Shuaifei,Li, Fangyuan,Qiao, Ruirui,Hu, Xi,Liao, Hongwei,Chen, Lumin,Wu, Jiahe,Wu, Haibin,Zhao, Meng,Liu, Jianan,Chen, Rui,Ma, Xibo,Kim, Dokyoon,Sun, Jihong,Davis, Thomas P.,Chen, Chunying,Tian, American Chemical Society 2018 ACS NANO Vol.12 No.12

<P>Ferroptosis, an iron-based cell-death pathway, has recently attracted great attention owing to its effectiveness in killing cancer cells. Previous investigations focused on the development of iron-based nanomaterials to induce ferroptosis in cancer cells by the up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the well-known Fenton reaction. Herein, we report a ferroptosis-inducing agent based on arginine-rich manganese silicate nanobubbles (AMSNs) that possess highly efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion ability and thereby induce ferroptosis by the inactivation of glutathione-dependent peroxidases 4 (GPX4). The AMSNs were synthesized <I>via</I> a one-pot reaction with arginine (Arg) as the surface ligand for tumor homing. Subsequently, a significant tumor suppression effect can be achieved by GSH depletion-induced ferroptosis. Moreover, the degradation of AMSNs during the GSH depletion contributed to <I>T</I>1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement as well as on-demand chemotherapeutic drug release for synergistic cancer therapy. We anticipate that the GSH-depletion-induced ferroptosis strategy by using manganese-based nanomaterials would provide insights in designing nanomedicines for tumor-targeted theranostics.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Interaction of Coping Styles and Psychological Stress on Anxious and Depressive Symptoms in Chinese Breast Cancer Patients

        Wang, Xi,Wang, Shu-Sen,Peng, Rou-Jun,Qin, Tao,Shi, Yan-Xia,Teng, Xiao-Yu,Liu, Dong-Gen,Chen, Wei-Qing,Yuan, Zhong-Yu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Purpose: This study aimed to assess possible interactive effects of coping styles and psychological stress on depression and anxiety symptoms in Chinese women shortly after diagnosis of breast cancer. Methods: Four hundred and one patients with breast cancer were face-to-face interviewed by trained research staff according to a standardized questionnaire including information on socio-demographic characteristics, psychological stress, coping styles, and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Interactive effects were assessed by hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: There were significant associations of the four domains of psychological stress with anxiety and depressive symptoms except for the relationship between "worrying about health being harmed" and depressive symptoms. "Abreaction coping behavior" and "escaping coping behavior" significantly increased the level of both anxiety and depressive symptoms; whereas an "active coping style" reswulted in significant decrease. The interaction of "active coping behavior" with "worrying about health being harmed" significantly increased the risk of the anxiety symptoms, while adopting "self-relaxing coping behavior" was associated with significant decrease. The interaction of "worry about daily life and social relationship being restricted" with "escaping coping behavior" significantly increased the risk of the depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that certain coping styles might moderate the association of psychological stress with anxiety and depressive symptoms in Chinese women with breast cancer.

      • Research on the Efficiency and Influencing Factors of Korea's Foreign Direct Investment in RCEP Partners

        Wang Xin-Yue,Xi Chen,Li Chen,Qing Wang 한국무역학회 2022 Journal of Korea trade Vol.26 No.4

Purpose – In this paper, we, taking South Korea's foreign direct investment in RCEP partners as an example, will examine its investment efficiency in these countries and analyze the main influencing factors, making suggestions for further liberalizing and facilitating its investment in and even for promoting its trade and economic cooperation with them. Design/methodology – In this study, we look at the panel data of South Korea and the other 13 RCEP countries (Brunei excluded) from 2000 to 2019 and apply the stochastic frontier analysis to measure its foreign direct investment efficiency and explore the influencing factors in RCEP countries. We examine the investment potential of South Korea in these places. Findings – We find that South Korea's average investment efficiency in RCEP countries reached 0.62, indicating large investment potential. We also find that its investment efficiency in RCEP partners was heterogeneous. Our study reveals that South Korea’s foreign direct investment is significantly positively correlated with the market size and population of the two countries, as well as with whether the host country has a coastline and rich natural resources, while negatively with geographic distance. It shows that free trade agreements, economic freedom, and regulatory quality play significant roles in improving investment efficiency. Originality/value – Through theoretical and empirical analysis, we deal with the efficiency and influencing factors of South Korea's direct investment in RCEP partners, proposing new drivers for facilitating its trade and investment in these countries and comprehensively evaluating the efficiency and revealing the trend of its FDI in these countries. In this paper, we put forward a solid theoretical basis for empirical analysis of the future economic and trade development between South Korea and its RCEP partners and give objective insights for further improving its foreign direct investment efficiency and tapping its investment potential.

Overexpression of a maize MYB48 gene confers drought tolerance in transgenic arabidopsis plants

        Yan Wang,Qianqian Wang,MingLi Liu,Chen Bo, Xi Wang,Qing Ma,Beijiu Cheng,Ronghao Cai 한국식물학회 2017 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.60 No.6

MYBs are a vital family of transcription factorsthat play critical roles in plant development and stressresponse. However, knowledge concerning the functions ofMYBs in the non-model plants is still limited. In this study,we isolated a R1-type MYB gene from maize (Zea mays L.),designated as ZmMYB48. Quantitative RT-PCR analysisdemonstrated that ZmMYB48 expression was induced bydrought and ABA treatments. Subcellular localization analysisrevealed that ZmMYB48 protein was targeted to the nucleusin tobacco leaf epidermal cells. Transactivation assay in yeastdemonstrated that ZmMYB48 had transcriptional activationability. Heterologous overexpression of ZmMYB48 inArabidopsis remarkably improved plant tolerance to droughtstress, as determined through physiological analyses ofsurvival rate, relative water content, malonaldehyde content, relative electrolyte leakage and proline content. Moreover, overexpression of ZmMYB48 enhanced the expression ofstress/ABA-responsive genes such as P5CS1, RD22, RD29Band ABI1. In addition, ZmMYB48-overexpressing plantsaccumulated higher content of ABA than WT plants underdrought stress. These results demonstrate that ZmMYB48might act as a positive regulator that participates in thedrought stress response through ABA signalling.

Fumigant Activity of Volatiles from Streptomyces alboflavus TD-1 against Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon

        Zhifang Wang,Changlu Wang,Fengjuan Li,Zhenjing Li,Mianhua Chen,Yurong Wang,Xi Qiao,Hong Zhang 한국미생물학회 2013 The journal of microbiology Vol.51 No.4

The fumigant activity of volatiles generated by Streptomyces alboflavus TD-1 against Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon was investigated. The results showed that the mycelial growth, sporulation, and spore germination of F. moniliforme were significantly suppressed, and that membrane permeability was disrupted in the presence of the volatiles. Gas chromatography-mass Spectrometry analysis revealed 31 kinds of volatile organic compound from the volatiles. Among them, two earthy-smelling substances, namely, 2-methylisoborneol (50.97%) and trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalinol (3.10%)were found. The most abundant compound, 2-methylisoborneol,exhibited inhibitory activity against F. moniliforme by fumigation. All these results suggested that S. alboflavus TD-1 can be a promising starter for the inhibition of F. moniliforme through fumigant action.

      • FNC, a Novel Nucleoside Analogue, Blocks Invasion of Aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cell Lines Via Inhibition of the Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway

        Zhang, Yan,Wang, Chen-Ping,Ding, Xi-Xi,Wang, Ning,Ma, Fang,Jiang, Jin-Hua,Wang, Qing-Duan,Chang, Jun-Biao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.16

Chemotherapy is the primary therapy for malignant lymphoma (ML). However, the clinical outcome is still far from satisfactory. Consequently, an understanding of the mechanism of modulating cancer cell invasion, migration and metastasis is important for the development of more effective chemotherapeutic agents. FNC, 2'-deoxy-2'-${\beta}$-fluoro-4'-azidocytidine, a novel cytidine analogue, has demonstrated significantly inhibitory effects on proliferation of several non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cell lines. A previous study indicated that FNC effectively inhibited the growth of Raji and JeKo-1 cells in dose-time dependent effects with $IC_{50}$ values of $0.2{\mu}M$ and $0.097{\mu}M$, respectively. This study was focused on investigating the anti-invasive properties of FNC on NHL cells and its potential mechanisms of action. Cell adhesion and transwell chamber assays were utilized to investigate the anti-invasive effects of FNC on Raji and JeKo-1 cells. Real-time PCR and Western blotting were employed to qualify the expression of ${\beta}$-catenin, the glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-$3{\beta}$), E-cadherin vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). The results revealed that FNC remarkably inhibited the adhesion, migration and invasion of two human aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma cell lines in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-catenin, MMP-2, MMP-9, VEGF mRNA and protein levels were decreased after FNC treatment, while GSK-$3{\beta}$ and E-cadherin increased. Our studies thus provide evidence and a rationale that FNC may offer an effective chemotherapeutic agent by regulating the invasion and metastasis of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma via inhibition of the Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling pathway.

Genetic dissection of leaf-related traits using 156 chromosomal segment substitution lines

        Xi Liu,Linglong Liu,Yinhui Xiao,Shijia Liu,Yunlu Tian,Liangming Chen,Zhiquan Wang,Ling Jiang,Zhigang Zhao,Jianmin Wan 한국식물학회 2015 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.58 No.6

A two-line super-hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety [Liangyoupei9 (LYP9)] demonstrated superiority over its both parents, viz. elite inbred lines 93-11 and Pei-ai64S (PA64S), as well as other conventional hybrids, and had long been exploited in China. However, the genetic basis of its leaf-related traits, supposed to be an important component for yield potential, remains elusive. Here, initially a set of chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) was constructed, in which the genome of Pei-ai64S has been introgressed into the background of 93-11. This set was developed by marker aided selection, based on 123 polymorphic SSR markers. The introgressed chromosomal segments presented in the 156 CSSLs covered 96.46% of Pei-ai64S genome. Afterwards, the CSSLs were deployed to assess the genetic basis of leaf size (length and width) and chlorophyll content of top three leaves across five different environments. The CSSLs showed transgressive segregation for all of the traits, and significant correlations were detected among most of the traits. A total of 27 quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified on ten chromosomes, and three QTL cluster affecting related traits were found on chromosome 3, 6, and 8, respectively. Remarkably, two key QTLs, qALW3-1 and qALW3-2, both controlling the antepenultimate leaf width, were identified in all five environments, and their effect were further validated by CSSLs harboring the two QTL alleles. Our results indicate that developing CSSLs is a powerful tool for genetic dissection of quantitative traits. Meanwhile, the QTLs controlling leaf-related traits uncovered here provide useful information for marker-assisted selection in improving the performance of leaf morphology and photosynthetic ability.
