The present study was conducted to elucidate some characteristics of soy protein hydrolysates. The soy protein was obtained from defatted soy power by the treatment of n-hexan. The hydrolysates of soy protein were prepared from hydrolysis by bromelian and pepsin with the two kinds of samples of precooking for 30 min in steam oven and noncooking, and fractionated through Bio-gel P-4 column chromatography. Fractions of hydrolysates separated on the Bio-gel column chromatography were carried out to SDS-PAG electrophoresis, resulting to show some different bends from 66kD to 14.2kD of molecular weight. In addition, the fractions showed different activities of superoxide dismutase. From these results, it was found that the hydrolysates could be available to use in a lot of food industrial fields as new functional food materials because the hydrolysates had different characteristics in electrophoresis and could increase the activity of superoxide dismutase.
Production of the α-glycosidase inhibitor 1-deoxynojirimycin from a various strains

1-deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ), a potent a-glycosidase inhibitor, has therapeutic applications in treatments of HIV, Gaucher’s disease, and diabetes. 1-DNJ has been extracted from natural sources (mulberry leaves) for therapeutic purposes; however, 1-DNJ ingredients are in limited supply and are costly to obtain on a large scale. Since certain strains of Bacillus and Streptomyces species reportedly produce 1-DNJ, they may serve as potential sources for high-yield 1-DNJ production. In this study, we obtained evidence for four bacteria that produce 1-DNJ in large quantities by high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Investigation of the effect of mulberry leaves powder concentration(1~5%), using the 1-DNJ high-production bacteria, provided evidence for microbial mass production of 1-DNJ.
Existing test data for the Act on Registration & Evaluation, etc. of Chemical Substances

Objectives In this study, the possibility of using existing test data provided in Korea and elsewhere for the registration of chemical substances was examined. Data on 510 chemical substances that are among the first subject to registration under the “Act on the Registration and Evaluation, etc. of Chemical Substances (K-REACH)” were analyzed. Methods The possibility of using existing data from 16 reference databases was examined for 510 chemical substances notified in July 2015 as being subject to registration. Results Test data with the reliability required for the registration of chemical substances under the K-REACH constituted 48.4% of the required physicochemical characteristics, 6.5% of the required health hazards, and 9.4% of the required environmental hazards. Conclusions Some existing test data were not within the scope of this research, including data used for registration in the European Union (EU). Thus, considering that 350 of these 510 species are registered in EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & Restriction of Chemicals, more test data may exist that can be utilized in addition to the data identified in this study. Furthermore, the K-REACH states that non-testing data (test results predicted through Read Across, Quantitative Structure- Activity Relationships) and the weight of evidence (test results predicted based on test data with low reliability) can also be utilized for registration data. Therefore, if methods for using such data were actively reviewed, it would be possible to reduce the cost of securing test data required for the registration of chemical substances.
