Thermal Evolution of BaO-CuO Flux as Sintering Aid for Proton Conducting Ceramic Fuel Cells
Biswas, Mridula,Hong, Jongsup,Kim, Hyoungchul,Son, Ji-Won,Lee, Jong-Ho,Kim, Byung-Kook,Lee, Hae-Weon,Yoon, Kyung Joong The Korean Ceramic Society 2016 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.53 No.5
The eutectic melt of BaO-CuO flux is known to be a potential sintering aid for $Ba(Zr,Y)O_3$ (BZY) electrolyte for proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). A density of BZY higher than 97% of theoretical density can be achieved via sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using a flux composed of 28 mol% BaO and 72 mol% CuO. In the present study, chemical and structural evolution of BaO-CuO flux throughout the sintering process was investigated. An intermediate holding step at $1100^{\circ}C$ leads to formation of various impurity compounds such as $BaCuO_{1.977}$, $Ba_{0.92}Cu_{1.06}O_{2.28}$ and $Cu_{16}O_{14.15}$, which exhibit significantly larger unit cell volumes than the matrix. The presence of such secondary compounds with large lattice mismatch can potentially lead to mechanical failure. On the other hand, direct heating to the final sintering temperature produced CuO and $Cu_2O$ as secondary phases, whose unit cell volumes are close to that of the matrix. Therefore, the final composition of the flux is strongly affected by the thermal history, and a proper sintering schedule should be used to obtain the desired properties of the final product.
Negative and Positive Persistent Photoconductance in Graphene
Biswas, Chandan,Gü,neş,, Fethullah,Loc, Duong Dinh,Lim, Seong Chu,Jeong, Mun Seok,Pribat, Didier,Lee, Young Hee American Chemical Society 2011 NANO LETTERS Vol.11 No.11
<P>Persistent photoconductance, a prolonged light-induced conducting behavior that lasts several hundred seconds, has been observed in semiconductors. Here we report persistent negative photoconductance and consecutive prominent persistent positive photoconductance in graphene. Unusually large yields of negative PC (34%) and positive PC (1652%) and remarkably long negative transient response time (several hours) were observed. Such high yields were reduced in multilayer graphene and were quenched under vacuum conditions. Two-dimensional metallic graphene strongly interacts with environment and/or substrate, causing this phenomenon, which is markedly different from that in three-dimensional semiconductors and nanoparticles.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2011/nalefd.2011.11.issue-11/nl202266h/production/images/medium/nl-2011-02266h_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl202266h'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Biswas, Goutam,Kim, Wanil,Kim, Kyong-Tai,Cho, Junhwi,Jeong, Dongjun,Song, Keon-Hyoung,Im, Jungkyun Hindawi Limited 2017 Journal of chemistry Vol.2017 No.-
<P>Based on the strong evidences between inflammation and neurodegeneration, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, are considered as effective agents to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. However, the clinical use of NSAIDs in these diseases is limited by low brain distribution. In this study, we had synthesized ibuprofen conjugate which has good brain penetration.<I> S</I>-(+)-Ibuprofen was covalently attached to a molecular transporter having FITC and eight terminal guanidine groups. This conjugate showed good cellular uptake property in live cells. It was also injected into a mouse and the distribution of the compound was examined in each organ. The conjugate was well delivered to mouse brain indicating the conjugate is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Our novel synthetic ibuprofen conjugate will hopefully deliver other NSAIDs into brain and is therefore applicable to the neurodegenerative diseases treatment or prevention.</P>

The effect of exogenous administration of tamoxifen (TAM) on hormonal profile and sexual maturity in Indian native Kadaknath (KN) fowl was investigated. Day-old chicks from the same hatch were randomly divided into 15 groups with 20 chicks in each group (5 treatments${\times}$3 replicates). The chicks were placed in battery brooders with wire-mesh floors and reared under uniform husbandry conditions (14 h light/d, 25-32${^{\circ}C}$) on a standard basal diet. At the age of two weeks (wk), birds from the control group ($T_{1}$) were injected with maize oil intramuscularly (I/M), whereas the other four experimental groups $T_{2}$, $T_{3}$, $T_{4}$ and $T_{5}$ were given tamoxifen (I/M) dissolved in maize oil at the rate of 0.5 mg (0.5 TAM), 1.0 mg (1.0 TAM), 2.5 mg (2.5 TAM) and 5.0 mg (5.0 TAM)/kg body weight, respectively, up to 30 wks on every alternate day. At every 6-wk interval, blood samples were collected from nine birds of each treatment group for estimation of estrogen and progesterone. The same birds were sacrificed for determination of the weight of ovary, oviduct, liver and adipose tissue. There was no significant difference in egg production traits except onset of lay and egg number. Low doses of TAM ($T_{3}$) advanced the onset of egg laying by 15 days over the control. Tamoxifen influenced the hormonal profile (estrogen and progesterone) in a dose dependent manner. However, higher doses of TAM suppressed ovary and oviductal growth. From this study, it may be concluded that lower doses of TAM enhanced sexual maturity while higher doses suppressed ovary and oviductal growth.

<P>Manufacturing a high-pressure sensitive diaphragm type sensor is a complex task. Due to it's complex shape, several parts are designed individually. It involves welding of several parts. As welding involves several parameters it's difficult to control the welding geometry where it is being fused. So it is likely that the physical boundary condition of the welded region will be different from the theoretical boundary conditions. So the change in boundary condition will make the deflection of the diaphragm different. For a precision device, any effect of a change in boundary condition can affect the deflection of the diaphragm largely. Thus, any effect of imperfect welding in a high precision measuring device can hamper the sensitivity of the particular device. A welded diaphragm of steel for a pressure sensor using eddy current sensor to detect it's deflection due to pressure can lose it's effectivity, due to the unpredictable boundary conditions created after the welding. In this paper, we will be trying to find the cause of deviation between the theoretical and experimental results due to the effect of a change in boundary conditions at the welded region.</P>
Effect of Vitamin E on Production Performance and Egg Quality Traits in Indian Native Kadaknath Hen
Biswas, Avishek,Mohan, J.,Sastry, K.V.H. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.3
This experiment investigated the effects of increasing dietary vitamin E (VE) on production performance and egg quality traits of Indian reared Kadaknath (KN) hens. One hundred and eighty (180), day old female KN chicks were randomly distributed to three dietary treatment groups for a period of 30 weeks. Each treatment comprised three replicates, each containing 20 chicks. The basal diet ($T_1$) contained 15 IU VE/kg and the two experimental diets were supplemented with 150 and 300 IU VE/kg (diets $T_2$ and $T_3$, respectively). DL-${\alpha}$-tocopherol acetate was used as the source of VE. All chicks were provided feed and water ad libitum. Production performance in terms of body weight, egg weight and hatchability did not differ significantly (p>0.05), whereas sexual maturity, egg production and fertility differed significantly (p<0.05) in $T_2$ compared to the other two groups. Egg quality traits in terms of albumin weight, yolk weight, shell thickness, albumin index and yolk index did not differ significantly (p>0.05), whereas the Haugh unit score was significantly higher (p<0.05) in $T_2$ than the control ($T_1$) and high dose treatment group ($T_3$). From this study, it can be concluded that lower levels of dietary VE may be beneficial for production performance and Haugh unit score but have no effect on egg quality traits in Indian reared KN hens.
