      • Injury mechanisms of the shoulder: Quantitative analysis of tendons and ligaments

Bey, Michael John University of Michigan 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

The shoulder is one of the most frequently injured joints in the human musculoskeletal system, yet the etiology of shoulder injuries is not always well understood. This thesis is a compilation of studies that investigate specific mechanisms of injury associated with pathologic conditions of the shoulder. For each study, our approach was to quantify joint and tissue mechanics in a cadaveric shoulder model to lend insight into a particular mechanism of injury. Chapter 2 describes an investigation into the effect of inferior humeral subluxation on the creation of SLAP lesion injuries, and this study demonstrated that inferior subluxation of the humeral head significantly facilitates the generation of type II SLAP lesions. Chapter 3 is a fundamental investigation of the glenohumeral and coracohumeral ligaments' role on resisting external humeral rotation. This study demonstrated that the coracohumeral and inferior glenohumeral ligaments serve as the primary restraints to external rotation in the late-cocking position of the overhand throwing motion. Chapter 4 describes the validation of a novel, MRI-based technique for quantifying intratissue strains, a technique representing a significant advancement over conventional strain-measuring techniques. This approach demonstrated a displacement accuracy of 41 μm and a strain accuracy of within ±0.6% for strains believed to be within the physiologic range. Chapter 5 describes application of the MRI-based strain measurement technique to quantifying intratendinous strains of the intact rotator cuff. This particular study suggests that the inferior region aspect of the supraspinatus tendon may be susceptible to damage during overhead activities. Chapter 6 extends the cadaveric model developed in Chapter 5 by investigating the effect of a simulated partial-thickness, articular-surface rotator cuff tears. This investigation demonstrated that a partial-thickness tear had a significant effect on rotator cuff tendon strain at nearly all glenohumeral joint positions. Chapter 7 summarizes the findings from Chapter 2–6 and suggests additional areas of study. Taken together, these chapters provide scientific and clinically relevant information which should improve our understanding of particular mechanisms of soft tissue injuries about the glenhumeral joint. In addition, these studies will stimulate new research hypotheses to further advance the scientific basis for clinical practice.

      • Aaron Douglas and Hale Woodruff: The social responsibility and expanded pedagogy of the Black artist

Bey, Sharif The Pennsylvania State University 2007 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This study examines the expanded pedagogy and formal instruction of Aaron Douglas and Hale Woodruff, two African-American artists who came to prominence during the New Negro Movement, in the 1920s. The decades following the New Negro Movement marked a new era for the art education of African-American students when renowned African-American artists began to prepare future generations of artists and art educators. Douglas and Woodruff spent their tenures teaching the visual arts at historically Black universities in Nashville, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia, respectively. They both had a profound influence on this new era of art education, in which they were situated in a Black experience in the segregated United States. I specifically explore to what extent and for what goals racial consciousness and Black content were a part of the instruction, artwork, and lives of Douglas and Woodruff. The majority of the data examined for this study was discovered in special collections in the archives of the libraries at Fisk and Atlanta Universities. Artist statements, letters, curricular materials, class and lectures notes, exams, interviews, artwork, and testimony of their former students were all closely examined to understand the political, cultural, aesthetic, and pedagogical influence of these two teaching artists. The data convincingly conveys that Douglas and Woodruff were influential figures outside of the classroom. My findings indicate that various political factors and the limitations of classroom instruction within these institutions did not allow Douglas and Woodruff to teach content which affirmed the historical and cultural significance of African-Americans in the United States, but their lives and artwork served as pedagogy which instilled racial pride, tenacity, and perseverance that was absent in the curriculum. I conclude the study with my speculation, as an art educator at a historically Black university, on the relevance of Douglas's and Woodruff's methods of educating African-American art students in the 1930s and 1940s to current students. Understanding how these two art educators effectively used their pedagogical, creative, and professional influence to earn the support of the Black community while navigating a White-male dominated field is critical to empowering and educating today's Black youth.

      • Preserving our seed: Exploring the role of urban African American churches and faith-based organizations in sex education

Bey, Adrienne M. Clark University of Delaware 2005 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This qualitative study explored the roles that African American faith leaders saw for their churches and organizations, if any, in supporting the development of healthy intimate relationships among African American youth and young adults, in a small urban community that had the fifth highest AIDS rate per capita in the United States. Data were collected from senior clergy, youth ministry leaders, and executive directors of twenty churches and faith based organizations. The roles that participants reported for themselves in addressing issues of sexuality and youth in the African American community were found to be clear for some churches, but more ambiguous for most churches. The research findings suggested that the role of churches as a forum for sex education was more complex than initially anticipated. Churches were found to play multiple roles in the African American community. The faith leaders' views of their churches' multiple roles in their communities determined the challenges that churches addressed and the strategies they pursued. Whether to focus on individual interventions, the congregation, the church community, or a community at large, or all, or some combination of these, were decisions that faith leaders had to make when dealing with issues of youth and sexuality. The research findings also suggested that the majority of faith leaders and their churches in this study were not amenable to directly handling issues of sexuality and youth. Because of the challenges and barriers they believed to be inherent in the African American community, some churches found these challenges insurmountable. Most churches believed that parents were the best educators for young people about sexual health issues. However, it was found that most churches in this study lacked adequate programming and resources to effectively deal with issues of sexuality, youth, and their families in a holistic way. Implications for practice and further research were also presented.

      • The Artist-Developer: A Case Study of Impact Through Art-Centered Community Development in Neighborhoods of Color

        Densmore-Bey, Aisha S Harvard University ProQuest Dissertations & Theses 2023 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247342

In this dissertation, I explore the community development work of three prominent African American artists who have used arts-based real estate development to create positive change in their neighborhoods. Through a multiple case study approach, I investigate the real estate, design, and artistic actions that led to the creation of these projects and if there were social benefits that followed. These benefits include social cohesion, adherence to social health determinants, minimization of displacement, and the perception of a strong cultural identity for each neighborhood. By comparing the work of all three artists, I aim to gain insights from community partners, residents, and those within the organizations. The first chapter of my dissertation highlights the importance of arts in city and neighborhood development and government policies to aid vulnerable communities. The second chapter reviews scholarly literature on the relationship between artists, neighborhood change, and development. In the third chapter, I discuss my research methods and evaluate the benefits and limitations of the case study approach. Chapter four investigates each artist and their organization, exploring their creative practices, the motivations behind their projects, and the real estate actions that made them possible. I examine neighborhood dynamics and the perceived impacts of these projects, discussing the opportunities and challenges they present. In the fieh chapter, I critically analyze the effects of these projects. In the final chapter, I draw conclusions and highlight areas for further research. While these arts-based development projects have positively impacted their neighborhoods, it is essential to note the challenges of maintaining an arts-led community organization. Ultimately, these projects cannot please everyone, but their benefits are far-reaching including improved social cohesion and cultural preservation. .

      • Prosocial Behavior and Neurodegenerative Disease

Lwi, Sandy Jing Bey ProQuest Dissertations & Theses University of Cali 2017 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247340

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive and dramatic changes in behavior and emotional responses. In particular, patients with bvFTD have deficits in empathy, including the ability to relate and respond to the emotions of others. These deficits are important precursors for prosocial behaviors -- actions intended to benefit people other than oneself -- and were thus hypothesized to be impaired in patients with bvFTD. Thus far, no known studies have utilized objective laboratory tests to examine patients' prosocial behaviors. The present study addressed these gaps by using objective laboratory measures (i.e., a donation paradigm) and a multi-method approach by studying the neural and emotional responses (i.e., autonomic and somatic peripheral physiology, facial expressions) associated with prosocial behavior across a sample of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and non-symptomatic aging caregivers. In the present study, 88 participants (17 with bvFTD, 12 with Alzheimer's disease, and 59 non-symptomatic caregivers) viewed a film of others in distress. Participants were then given the option to donate their own money as a measure of prosocial behavior. Results revealed that patients with bvFTD donated significantly less money than non-symptomatic caregivers, while patients with Alzheimer's disease and non-symptomatic caregivers donated comparable amounts. When examining emotional responses and regions of neural degeneration as potential mediators of the relationship between diagnosis and prosocial behavior, neither emotional responses nor neural regions were found to mediate the findings with one exception: lower ventral striatum volume was significantly associated with lower levels of prosocial behavior. This finding aligns with research that suggests that the ventral striatum plays a central role in the reward network of the brain, and how evolutionarily, feeling reward when engaging in prosocial behaviors likely conferred benefits in the context of interpersonal relationships. The study extends our understanding of a neurodegenerative disease that profoundly impacts the lives of patients and their families and contributes important new information to the literature on prosocial behavior.
