      • Increase in the Rate of HPV Positive Oropharyngeal Cancers During 1996-2011 in a Case Study in Turkey

        Background: Primary aim of this study is to assess whether or not there is an increase at rate of HPV positive oropharyngeal cancers during 1996-2011 in Turkey, for comparison with prior reports from Western countries. Materials and Methods: A total of 138 newly diagnosed patients with oropharyngeal cancer were identified, 39 of which had no primary tumor specimen available and 18 patients with invalid HPV status, therefore HPV status for remaining 81 patients was evaluated. The presence and type of HPV DNA were determined with formalin-fixed paraffin embedded specimens, using an HPV DNA-based multiplex PCR assay. Associations between HPV status and clinicopathological characteristics were evaluated using a two-sample t-test for the continuous variables and the categorical variables were compared by chi-square test. Overall survival (OS) periods were calculated with Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The proportion of HPV-positive cancer has continued to increase during 2004-2011 as compared with 1996-2003. Notably, 33% (6/18) of the cases were HPV-positive in 1996-1999, 43% (9/21) in 2000-2003, 55% (11/20) in 2004-2007 and 70% (16/23) in 2008-2011. Thus, when we compared the results obtained during the 2004-2011with results of 1996-2003 period, we found that increase at HPV-positivity ratio was statistically significant (38% vs 64% p=0.012). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that HPV positive oropharyngeal cancers are increasing in Turkish patients as in the Western world.

        Kolaviron protects against cognitive deficits and cortico-hippocampal perturbations associated with maternal deprivation in rats

        Prolonged separation of pups from their mother in early postnatal period can interfere with normal growth and development, resulting in different behavioral changes similar to features of schizophrenia in man. This study explored the cytoprotective action of kolaviron, a biflavonoid, on the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of maternally deprived Wistar rats. Eight months old female rats were time-mated, and after delivery their pups were randomly assigned into four groups; group A received 0.5 ml of normal saline, group B received kolaviron orally (200 mg/kg/bw) on postnatal days (PND) 21–35, group C were maternally deprived on PND 9 for 24 hours, while group D were also maternally deprived on PND 9 for 24 hours, and then received kolaviron orally (200 mg/kg/bw) on PND 21–35. Behavioral studies (open field test, Morris water test, and Y-maze test) were conducted after the experiment prior to sacrifice. Some of the rats were anesthetized with ketamine and perfusion-fixed with 0.1 M phosphate buffered saline and 4% paraformaldehyde, while others were sacrificed by cervical dislocation for enzyme studies. The hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were excised from the brain and processed for tissue histology, histochemistry, and enzymatic analysis. Results revealed behavioral deficits, oxidative stress, degenerative changes, and astrocytosis in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of maternally deprived rats, but intervention with kolaviron caused significant improvement in neurobehavior, morphology, and neurochemistry in these brain areas. We concluded that kolaviron could protect the brain against neurological consequences of nutritional and environmental insults arising from maternal separation in early postnatal period.

        Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis: Ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings

        Objective: The aim of the present study is to assess carpal tunnel syndrome's (CTS’s) ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and compare them with healthy controls. Methods: Thirty-nine PsA and twenty-eight healthy volunteers were examined in this study. Demographic and clinical features were recorded. CTS-6, a diagnostic algorithm, was used to estimate the probability of CTS. Electrodiagnostic study (EDS) was applied to all wrists included in the report, where the diagnosis of CTS was made by EDS. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve was measured at pisiform bone level by US and MRI. Results: Regarding to the demographic characteristics, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups. Twelve of 39 (30.76%) PsA patients had CTS, whereas CTS was not detected in the control group (p=0.001). US and MRI showed increased median nerve CSA in PsA patients compared to healthy controls (p=0.005, p<0.001; respectively). Also, US and MRI showed increased median nerve CSA in CTS patients compared to others (p=0.002, p<0.001; respectively). The Pearson correlation coefficient between MRI and US measurements of the CSA was 0.85 (p<0.001). Conclusion: CTS frequency in PsA patients is found higher than healthy controls. The relationship between CTS diagnosed by EDS and CSA measured by both US and MRI was observed in PsA patients.

      • Permethrin exposure affects neurobehavior and cellular characterization in rats’ brain

        This study investigated the neurotoxic effects of permethrin on the cerebellum, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of Wistar rats and its effects on some behavioral patterns. Fifteen adult male Wistar rats were grouped into three categories: Group A received 0.1 mL normal saline (control), and Groups B and C received mixed feed with 500 ㎎/㎏ and 1,000 ㎎/㎏ of 0.6% permethrin, respectively, for 14 days. The animals were assessed for memory, anxiety and exploratory locomotion and thereafter anesthetized and transcardially perfused with normal saline and 4% paraformaldehyde (PFA). Cerebellum, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were excised from the whole brain and processed for tissue histology, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Oxidative status and lipid peroxidation were also assessed using catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde as biomarkers. Results revealed dose-dependent decrease in body weights but increase in cerebellar and prefrontal weights, depletion of endogenous antioxidant markers, cognitive deficits, reduced locomotor activities, degenerative changes in the microarchitecture at high doses and presence of chromatolytic cells at both low and high doses of permethrin. Astrocytes were activated while synaptophysin expression was downregulated. Permethrin causes dose-dependent neurotoxicity on the morphology, neurochemistry and oxidative status of different brain regions, and these could affect behavioral performance and other neurologic functions.
