Unexpected epileptogenic effect of lethal doses of pentobarbital: a case report
Giudicelli-Bailly Amélie,Badia Chiara Della,Augsburger Marc,Quintard Hervé,Giraud Raphaël,De Stefano Pia 대한신경집중치료학회 2023 대한신경집중치료학회지 Vol.16 No.1
Background: Barbiturate poisoning is rare but potentially fatal. Case Report: We reported a case of barbiturate poisoning in a 28-year-old woman who recovered from lethal pentobarbital deliberate self-poisoning. The initial blood pentobarbital concentration was 61 mg/L, corresponding to a potentially lethal dose. Despite the ingestion of a high dose of pentobarbital, the electroencephalogram revealed an unattended pattern compatible with possible nonconvulsive status epilepticus. Following resuscitation maneuvers, appropriate care, and antiseizure medication, the patient awakened after 7 days. The evolution was excellent without neurological deficits at 2 months. Conclusion: Despite the expected and known effects of high-dose pentobarbital in reducing and suppressing cortical activity in the brain, the present case demonstrates that lethal dose of pentobarbital may have an epileptogenic effect. Our hypothesis was that the mechanism of the origin of such a picture is a relatively abrupt decrease in toxic doses of pentobarbital, resulting in a withdrawal phenomenon.
A First Case of Human Trichuriasis from a Roman Lead Coffin in France
Benjamin Dufour,Maxence Segard,Matthieu Le Bailly 대한기생충학열대의학회 2016 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.54 No.5
A paleoparasitological study was carried out on 2 lead coffins recovered from the Roman site of Jaunay-Clan (near Poitiers, France). For the first time, this particular type of burial gave positive parasitological results, and eggs of the whipworm Trichuris trichiura were identified in 1 individual. In the present case, thanatomorphose associated with funerary practices may explain the scarcity of the recovered eggs. However, human whipworm has now been observed in 9 individuals dated to the Roman period. The very high frequency of Trichuris sp. eggs in Roman archaeological sites (up to 80%) suggests that fecal peril, hygiene, and waste management were problematic during this period. Finally, due to the fact that very few analyses have been conducted on human bodies dated to the Roman period, more analyses must be performed in the future to provide further information about diseases in the Roman world.

Assessing the Parasitic Burden in a Late Antique Florentine Emergency Burial Site
Kevin Roche,Elsa Pacciani,Raffaella Bianucci,Matthieu Le Bailly 대한기생충학열대의학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.57 No.6
Excavation (2008-2014) carried out under the Uffizi Gallery (Florence, Italy) led to the discovery of 75 individuals, mostly buried in multiple graves. Based on Roman minted coins, the graves were preliminarily dated between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th centuries CE. Taphonomy showed that this was an emergency burial site associated with a catastrophic event, possibly an epidemic of unknown etiology with high mortality rates. In this perspective, paleoparasitological investigations were performed on 18 individuals exhumed from 9 multiple graves to assess the burden of gastrointestinal parasitism. Five out of eighteen individuals (27.7%) tested positive for ascarid-type remains; these are considered as “decorticated” Ascaris eggs, which have lost their outer mammillated coat. Roundworms (genus Ascaris) commonly infest human populations under dire sanitary conditions. Archaeological and historical evidence indicates that Florentia suffered a period of economic crisis between the end of 4th and the beginning of the 5th centuries CE, and that the aqueduct was severely damaged at the beginning of the 4th century CE, possibly during the siege of the Goths (406 CE). It is more than plausible that the epidemic, possibly coupled with the disruption of the aqueduct, deeply affected the living conditions of these individuals. A 27.7% frequency suggests that ascariasis was widespread in this population. This investigation exemplifies how paleoparasitological information can be retrieved from the analysis of sediments sampled in cemeteries, thus allowing a better assessment of the varying frequency of parasitic infections among ancient populations.

Abstract

The influence on interfacial energy of multiwall unfunctionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) trapped at the interface of an immiscible blend of polyamide 12 (PA12) and acrylate‐ethylene (EA) copolymer is investigated with the help of the Palierne model combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. It is found that the interfacial energy is unaffected by the interfacially trapped CNTs. The reduced droplet size observed in the presence of CNTs can neither be ascribed to a classical compatibilizer effect due to lower interfacial energy leading to enhanced breakup during processing, nor to the minute changes of the continuous phase viscosity induced by the CNTs. Another explanation based on steric hindrance is proposed. A network CNT layer that acts as a rigid shell is formed, which prevents coalescence of colliding droplets.

Paleoparasitological analysis was carried on 4 Merovingian skeletons, dated from the late-5th to the late-9th centuries, and recovered in the church of Saint-Martin-au-Val in Chartres (Center region, France). The corpses were buried in stone sarcophagi, which were still sealed at the time of excavation. Parasite marker extraction was conducted on sediment samples taken from the abdominal and pelvic regions, but also on samples taken from under the head and the feet as control samples. Microscopic observation revealed the presence of 3 gastrointestinal parasites, namely the roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), the whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and the fish tapeworm (genus Diphyllobothrium). This analysis contributes to a better knowledge of the health status and the lifestyle of ancient medieval populations during the Merovingian period, for which very few paleoparasitological data were available, up until now. It demonstrates the presence of the fish tapeworm for the first time during this period.
선물프리미엄 이례현상에 있어서 고빈도 이자차이율과 장기기억 특성
( Richard T Baillie ),한영욱 ( Young Wook Han ) 한국금융공학회 2013 금융공학연구 Vol.12 No.1
This paper considers high frequency time series for the US and German 30 day Eurobond interest rate differential. The data are used to address the issue of the order of integration of the forward premium, which is at the heart of the controversy concerning the forward premium anomaly. Extraction of the intraday periodicity in the high frequency forward premium presents unusual difficulties due to the very persistent autocorrelation in both the first two conditional moments. Parametric ARFIMA-FIGARCH long memory model in both the first two conditional moments is found to represent high frequency forward premium quite well, and are similar to results from semi parametric local Whittle estimation. There is strong evidence of long memory effects in both the first two moments of the forward premium at very short spans of high frequency data. The empirical results are consistent with long memory being an intrinsic property of the markets. The results indicate that the “lack of balance” in the Fama type forward premium regression and the consequent rejection of uncovered interest rate parity (UIP) may well be an inherent feature of the DM-$ currency mankets.
