The article analyzes the main stages in the development of bilateral economic relations between the USSR/Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) since the 1950s. It is shown how China gradually replaced Russia as the main trade, economic and technological partner of the DPRK. However, despite a significant decrease in trade turnover between Russia and the DPRK in the last 15 years, there are several strategic and economically important tangency points between the two countries. The main current investment projects of cooperation are reflected, as well as projects related to the use of the DPRK’s labor resources, concentrated mainly in the Russian Far East. The characteristic is given of the largest bilateral investment project in transportation infrastructure (Khasan–Rajin Railway). Future cooperation projects are presented that are related to the participation of Russia and both the DPRK and the Republic of Korea. Among them are the projects of connecting the Trans-Siberian and Trans-Korean Railways, as well as energy projects. The possibilities are analyzed of trilateral cooperation (Russia–DPRK–Republic of Korea) within the framework of special economic zones both in the DPRK and in the Far East of Russia. The factors, both positive and negative, affecting the implementation of trilateral cooperation are analyzed.
