The prospect of using sub-lethal imidacloprid or pirimicarb and a parasitoid wasp, Lysiphlebus fabarum, simultaneously, to control Aphis gossypii on cucumber plants

        Ali Almasi,Arash Rasekh,Mehdi Esfandiari,Majeed Askari Seyahooei,Masumeh Ziaee 한국응용곤충학회 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.21 No.1

The broad-spectrum insecticides greatly influence the control of cotton aphids; however, due to frequent chemicalcontrol, Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) has developed resistance against several classes of syntheticinsecticides. In this study, we explored the sub-lethal effects of imidacloprid and pirimicarb, two commonly usedinsecticides for aphid control, on a parasitoid wasp, Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Braconidae: Aphidiinae),when simultaneously used to control melon aphid on cucumber plants, as part of a comprehensive study forintegrated pest management. Bioassays of imidacloprid and pirimicarb were performed to calculate LC50 withthird instars of A. gossypii. The LC50 of these insecticides (110.55 and 250.89 μg/lit, respectively) were used toexpose the wasp larvae, pupae, and adult parasitoids on a cucumber leaf. The percent mortality, percent adultemergence, and sex ratio were calculated during each exposure test. Moreover, the body size, egg load, andmature egg size of wasps surviving the insecticide treatments, as well as the sex ratio of the second generationwas evaluated. Regardless of the host aphid mortality, none of the insecticides caused mortality of larval stage ofthe parasitoid. The insecticide application on pupal stage revealed that the percentage of mortality, sex ratio, body size, and egg load of surviving wasps, as well as the sex ratio of their offspring was adversely affected byimidacloprid, but not by pirimicarb. The present study suggests pirimicarb as a preferred insecticide, with lessharmful effects on the fitness components of L. fabarum, for integrated pest management of cotton aphids.

Interactions between host plant, Aphis fabae, and its natural enemies, Orius albidipennis and Lysiphlebus fabarum in a tritrophic system

        Ahmad Rashedi,Ali Rajabpour,Arash Rasekh,Nooshin Zandi-Sohani 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.3

The interactions between two natural enemies (NEs) were studied in a tritrophic system to evaluate the efficacy of simultaneous releases of a parasitoid, Lysiphlebus fabarum Marshal (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and a predator, Orius albidipennis Reuter (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) against Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae). Three experiments were performed to evaluate the prey preference of a predator to parasitized versus unparasitized aphid hosts; to investigate the emission of volatile synomones by the host plant, Vicia fabae, and to determine its behavioral effect on the NEs; and to determine behavioral effect of volatile infochemicals between NEs. Results showed that the female predatory bug did not show significant preference between parasitized and unparasitized aphids, but the male bug had significant preference for parasitized mummies. Olfactometry trials documented that both NEs were significantly attracted to volatile cues released by the host plant infested with the aphid. Each of the NEs avoided odors which indicated the presence of another intraguild competitor. Therefore, simultaneously releases of the NEs are not recommended.

Life table parameters of the coccinellid Hyperaspis polita, a native predator in Iran, feeding on the invasive mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis

        Fatemeh Seyfollahi,Mehdi Esfandiari,Mohammad Saeed Mossadegh,Arash Rasekh 한국응용곤충학회 2016 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.19 No.3

Hyperaspis polita Weise (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is one of the most important predators of the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea: Pseudococcidae), in southern Iran. The development, survivorship, longevity, reproduction, and life table parameters of this predator were evaluated at 25, 30, and 35 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 14 L:10 D. The duration of total pre-adult stage in males and females decreased from 32.63 and 30.06 at 25 °C to 19.96 and 19.37 days at 35 °C, respectively. The oviposition period of females was significantly affected by temperature that was, 47.73, 68.66 and 27.65 days with average egg production of 207.37, 505.50, and 151.03 at 25, 30, and 35 °C, respectively. According to the age-stage, two-sex life table, the highest values of the intrinsic rate of increase rm were obtained at 30 (0.112 d−1) and 35 °C (0.120 d−1) with no significant difference. The finite rate of increase (λ) was the highest at 30 (1.130 d−1) and 35 °C (1.146 d−1) with no significant difference. The net reproductive rate was the highest at 30 °C (R0 = 204.240 offspring) and the mean generation time was shortest at 35 °C (T = 29.87 d). The results indicate that suitable temperature for population development and fecundity of H. polita is around 30 °C, which could be a result of adaptation of this coccinellid predator to the warm climate of southwestern Iran.
