The purpose of this paper is to manifest that the Unity thesis and the Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotle's ethics should be understood reciprocally, and to show where and how they meet each other. The first step that I take is to make a distinction between 'the characteristic dimension' and 'the critical dimension' intrinsic to all of the individual virtues as well as 'the one-dimensional' and 'many-dimensional' aspects of the mean, and to find out the interconnection between the Unity thesis and the Doctrine of the Mean. Next, by contrasting with the natural virtue, I will show that the ethical virtue should be understood teleologically. As a consequence, it will be proved that what the Unity Thesis asks us is the overall understanding of End(telos) as a whole and this is the task of the practical wisdom(phronesis). At the same time, the mean will be revealed as a certain state directed to the End as a whole understood by the practical wisdom rather than the mere sum of the middles which might be obtained in any individual virtue. 본고의 목적은, 아리스토텔레스의 ‘덕의 통일성 테제’와 ‘중용론’의 연계지점을 밝힘으로써 양자의 의미를 통합적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 모든 개별적 덕에 내재된 ‘특징적 차원’과 ‘판단의 차원’의 경계, 그리고 중용의 ‘1차원적’ 측면과 ‘다차원적’ 측면의 경계를 명료화한다. 이 과정에서 ‘덕의 통일성 테제’와 ‘중용론’의 상호 연관성이 드러날 것이다. 또한 “자연적 덕(the natural virtue)”과 “성품적 덕(the ethical virtue)”의 비교·대조를 통해, 성품적 덕이 목적론적으로 이해되어야 하는 이유를 제시한다. 이상의 논의를 통해, ‘통일성 테제’가 함의하는 바는 목적(telos)에 대한 “전반적인 통찰”이고, 이는 결국 “실천지(phronēsis)”에 대한 요구임이 드러날 것이다. ‘중용’ 역시, 개별적 덕 각각에서 찾아지는 중간 지점들의 단순 합산이 아니라, 실천지가 파악한 총체적 목적에 의해 규정되는 하나의 지점임이 확인될 것이다.
