Christian Mission in a Five Hundred Year Context

20세기는 인류 역사에 있어서 놀라운 시기였는데 그 이유는 세계 역사를 주도했던 ‘유럽인의 대이주’ (Great European Migration, 이하 GEM)가 이 시기에 막을 내렸기 때문이다. GEM은 20세기에 정점을 이루었다가 더 이상 진전되지 않았고 이어서 오히려 전세가 역전되기 시작했다. GEM은 16세기 초반부터 20세기 중반까지 지속되었다. GEM이 세계 종교에 미친 가장 기이한 현상은 바로 기독교의 자리매김이었다. GEM이 시작된 16세기만 하더라도 기독교는 유럽의 종교였으며 많은 유럽 사람들의 종교이기도 했다. 그러나 20세기에 들어서 서구 세계 특히 유럽이 쇠퇴하고 유럽을 제외한 나머지 세계 특히 아프리카가 성장하면서 전세계 기독교 문화와 기독교 인구의 분포에 큰 변화가 생겼다. 오늘날 기독교 신앙을 고백하는 사람들은 대부분 아프리카, 아시아, 라틴아메리카 그리고 태평양 연안의 섬나라 사람들이다. 그리고 이들 기독교인 숫자는 과거 기독교 국가였던 유럽 기독교인보다 훨씬 더 많으며 북아메리카의 신자들보다도 더 많다. 기독교는 이제 아프리카 아시아 그리고 라틴아메리카 사람들이 그 대부분을 차지하는 비서구 세계의 종교이다. 맨 처음의 기독교가 이스라엘이라는 비서구 세계에서 시작되었듯이 이제 기독교는 다시 한 번 비서구 사회의 종교가 되었다. 그리고 기독교는 본래의 모습으로 돌아가게 되었다. 세계 교회의 균형이 서구 세계에서 비서구 세계로 이동했다. 그리고 유럽과 북아메리카를 기독교의 ‘본향’으로 간주했던 생각은 이제 구시대적인 사상이 되고 말았다. 교회에는 기독교를 받아들인 사회의 다양한 부분이 포함되어 있다. 이러한 다양한 부분을 ‘인종’ 이라는 이름으로구분짓기 보다는 다양한 삶의 양식이며 다양한 문화로 받아들여야 한다, 이렇게 다양한 사회의 부분은 지금도 지어져 가고 있는 새로운 성전의 벽돌이며 예수 그리스도를 머리로 하는 몸의 각 부분이다, 인류는 서로 함께 할 때만이 그리스도의 장성한 분량에까지 자라갈수 있는 것이다. The twentieth century was an extraordinary period in human history because a vast movement of population, the Great European Migration, that had shaped world history ended. In the twentieth century this movement of population reached its peak, then came to a halt and went into reverse. The Great European Migration lasted from about the beginning of the sixteenth century until the middle of the twentieth. The strangest religious aspect of the Migration was in the position of Christianity. When the Great European began in the sixteenth century, Christianity was the religion of Europe and a largely European religion. By the end of the twentieth a massive recession in the West, especially in Europe, and a massive accession in the rest of the world, and especially Africa, had transformed the cultural and demo-graphic distribution of Christianity. The majority of those who profess the Christian faith are now Africans, Asians, Latin Americans and Pacific Islanders; and they substantially outnumber the professed Christians of Europe, the old Christendom, and its North American outcrop. Christianity is now a predominantly non-western religion, the profession principally of African and Asian and Latin American people. Christianity had once more become, as in its beginnings, a non-Western religion and it has reverted to type. The balance of the Church has shifted and the idea of a “home base” in Europe and North America is no longer an operating concept. There are now an infinite number of segments of partially converted social reality within the Church. They are not simply many races, but many lifestyles, many cultures. Each is a building block in a new temple that is in precess of building and an organ in a functioning body of which Christ is the brain. Only together will they reach the fullness of Christ which is the completion and the perfection of humanity.
