Indians and Rural Displacement: Exclusion from Region Building in Malaysia
Anantha Raman Govindasamy 서울대학교행정대학원 2010 Asian Journal of Political Science Vol.18 No.1
Building regions often creates socio-economic imbalances that exclude low-incomeearners from the benefits of development. In Malaysia, an example of this is theterritorial and cultural displacement of Indian plantation workers by rapid economicgrowth and urbanisation. Since 1980, nearly 300,000 Indians have been forced to movefrom the long-term relative security of their plantation estate communities, and haverelocated into urban squatter settlements, when plantation land has been subdivided forhousing and industrial estates. This article examines the loss of income, social role andcultural identity which accompanied the loss of physical place. Using a case study fromKamiri Estate in Perak, it also outlines the Indian community’s attempts to politicallyengage and negotiate a level of regional belonging.
