        Effect of ultrasonic agitation on push-out bond strength and adaptation of root-end filling materials

        Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic agitation of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium silicate-based cement (CSC), and Sealer 26 (S26) on adaptation at the cement/dentin interface and push-out bond strength. Materials and Methods: Sixty maxillary canines were divided into 6 groups (n = 10): MTA, S26, and CSC, with or without ultrasonic activation (US). After obturation, the apical portions of the teeth were sectioned, and retrograde cavities were prepared and filled with cement by hand condensation. In the US groups, the cement was activated for 60 seconds: 30 seconds in the mesio-distal direction and 30 seconds in the buccal-lingual direction, using a mini Irrisonic insert coupled with the ultrasound transducer. After the materials set, 1.5-mm thick sections were obtained from the apexes. The presence of gaps and the bond between cement and dentin were analyzed using low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy. Push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. Results: Ultrasonic agitation increased the interfacial adaptation of the cements. The S26 US group showed a higher adaptation value than MTA (p < 0.05). US improved the push-out bond strength for all the cements (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The US of retrograde filling cements enhanced the bond to the dentin wall of the root-end filling materials tested.

      • Sentry@Home - Leveraging the Smart Home for Privacy in Pervasive Computing

        This article introduces a privacy framework for Smart Homes, supporting individuals roaming freely in pervasive computing environments. Such environments typically are equipped with different kinds of sensors and tracking devices for context-aware service provisioning. While on the one hand, people want to take advantage of the comfort and added value of personalized context-aware services, privacy and traceability becomes a serious concern on the other hand. The question arises, how we can build up trust into inherently untrusted services in a potentially hostile environment? How can it be guaranteed that eventually all sensitive data is deleted or safely stored away? The Sentry@HOME concept, as part of our User-centric Privacy Framework, addresses these concerns. It is designed to become an integral part of the user’s home environment; seamlessly embedded into the Smart Home software infrastructure.. The Smart Home itself then can be leveraged to act as a privacy proxy for a tracked individual. On behalf of the user it constitutes the central privacy enforcement point for all privacy-relevant accesses to private or sensitive data. We are confident that our contribution, the combination of Smart Homes and a privacy-aware infrastructure, substantially adds to the success of personalized pervasive computing systems.

      • New Legal and Financial Realities in the COVID-Era and Their Effect in Translation

        The activity of translators is proving key for the transmission of a large volume of information in the legal and financial fields that has been needed and is still required in many companies, governments, associations, etc. and in different languages very quickly so that citizens, communities, businessmen, clients, employees, public officials and authorities around the world can carry out activities of a daily nature. This information is collected in different textual realities such as company regulations, legislation, communications and administrative documents that are key due to the legal effects and consequences that they entail. What are exactly these new realities and how have they affected the work of financial and legal translators? Should this have an impact in the contents of our classes so as to make our students aware of these new realities? How should it be done? These are some of the questions we will answer during this presentation with the aim to provide an overview of the latest changes in the field of financial and legal translation due to this unprecedented situation that we have been facing for many months now. We will show different practical examples that will highlight some of the latest innovations in the field.

      • Personal Privacy Management for Common Users

        In this work, we introduce the Privacy Manager, a user interface designed to allow non-expert users to manage privacy in the envisioned era of pervasive computing. The Privacy Manager is part of the implementation of the User-centric Privacy Framework, which was introduced as a novel mechanism to enable personal privacy for the inhabitants of the smart home. The Privacy Manager interface incorporates a set of application parts designed especially to meet the requirements of user friendliness, and privacy awareness, with the goal of making privacy management an affordable task for common users. Our first prototype allows to: i) customize permissions for the disclosure of their personal data, ii) control active and passive interactions with services, iii) define obligations to be negotiated on the usage of the data, upon transmission, iv) be aware of privacy related issues such as granted and denied permissions, v) apply alternative privacy mechanisms to access control, as white lying and obfuscation, vi) adhere to enterprise privacy policies based on a contractual relationship with an enterprise or organization. Providing people with tools to control their privacy is critical to guarantee the success of pervasive computing.

        Comparison of limited- and large-volume cone-beam computed tomography using a small voxel size for detecting isthmuses in mandibular molars

        Purpose: This study was performed to compare the ability of limited- and large-volume cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to display isthmuses in the apical root canals of mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: Forty human mandibular first molars with isthmuses in the apical 3 mm of mesial roots were scanned by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and their thickness, area, and length were recorded. The samples were examined using 2 CBCT systems, using the smallest voxels and field of view available for each device. The Mann-Whitney, Friedman, and Dunn multiple comparison tests were performed (α=0.05). Results: The 3D Accuitomo 170 and i-Cat devices detected 77.5% and 75.0% of isthmuses, respectively (P>0.05). For length measurements, there were significant differences between micro-CT and both 3D Accuitomo 170 and i-Cat(P<0.05). Conclusion: Both CBCT systems performed similarly and did not detect isthmuses in the apical third in some cases. CBCT still does not equal the performance of micro-CT in isthmus detection, but it is nonetheless a valuable tool in endodontic practice.

        Efficacy of reciprocating instruments and final irrigant activation protocols on retreatment of mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars: a micro-CT analysis

        Objectives This study evaluated the efficacy of 3 reciprocating systems and the effects of 2 instruments for irrigant activation on filling material removal. Materials and Methods Forty mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars were prepared up to size 25.06 and obturated. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) examination #1 was performed. Teeth were then divided into 4 groups (n = 10), according to the retreatment protocol: (1) manual, (2) Reciproc Blue, (3) WaveOne Gold, and (4) X1 Blue. Micro-CT examinations #2 and #3 were performed after filling removal and repreparation, respectively. Next, all teeth were divided into 2 new groups (n = 20) according to the irrigant activation protocol: XP Clean (XP Clean size 25.02) and Flatsonic (Flatsonic ultrasonic tip). Micro-CT examination #4 was performed after irrigant activation. Statistical analysis was performed with a significance level set at 5%. Results WaveOne Gold removed a significantly greater amount of filling material than the manual group (p < 0.05). The time to reach the WL was similar for all reciprocating systems (p > 0.05). X1 Blue was faster than the manual group (p < 0.05). Only manual group improved the filling material removal after the repreparation stage (p < 0.05). Both activation protocols significantly improved the filling material removal (p < 0.05), without differences between them (p > 0.05). Conclusions None of the tested instruments completely removed the filling material. X1 Blue size 25.06 reached the working length in the shortest time. XP Clean and Flatsonic improved the filling material removal.
