As the global demand for the carrageenophyte Kappaphycus is steadily increasing, its overall productivity, carrageenan quality, and disease resistance are gradually declining. In the face of this dilemma, wild Kappaphycus populations are viewed as sources of new cultivars that could potentially enhance production; therefore, assessment of their diversity is crucial. This study highlights the morphological and genetic diversity of wild Kappaphycus species obtained from two sites in the Philippines. Nucleotide alignments of available 5' region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) and cox2-3 spacer sequences of Kappaphycus confirmed the presence of K. alvarezii in Guiuan, Eastern Samar and K. striatus in Bolinao, Pangasinan. Based on the concatenated sequences of the COI-5P and the cox2-3 spacer, nine novel haplotypes were observed along with other published haplotypes. However, there was no relationship between haplotype and morphology. These newly recognized haplotypes indicate a reservoir of unutilized wild genotypes in the Philippines, which could be taken advantage of in developing new cultivars with superior traits. DNA barcodes generated from this study effectively expand the existing databank of Kappaphycus sequences and can provide insights in elucidating the genetic diversity of Kappaphycus species in the country.
Correlates of Bone Mineral Density and Sagittal Spinal Balance in the Aged

Objective To investigate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and sagittal spinal balance in the Korean elderly population. Methods The retrospective study included subjects aged 60 years and above, who had whole-spine lateral radiography and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) within a year’s gap between each other. Sagittal vertical axis (SVA) for evaluation of sagittal spinal balance and five spinopelvic parameters were measured through radiography. The presence of compression fracture was identified. Correlations of BMD T-scores with SVA and with the spinopelvic parameters were assessed using Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). Linear regression analyses were performed between SVA and the clinical and radiologic variables. Results One hundred twenty-two subjects (42 males and 80 females; mean age, 69.93±5.5 years) were included in the study. BMD, femur or spine, was not correlated with SVA or any spinopelvic parameters in both genders (PCC<±0.2), except that spine BMD in men was associated with sacral slope. Univariate regression analysis revealed association between SVA and lumbar lordosis, pelvic tilt, and compression fractures in both genders; it was also associated with age and pelvic incidence in females and with sacral slope in males. Multivariate linear regression model showed lumbar lordosis and compression fracture as variables affecting SVA in both sexes; pelvic incidence was another factor affecting SVA in women only.Conclusion BMD was not associated with sagittal spinal balance in the aged. Sagittal spinal balance was explained partly by lumbar lordosis and compression fracture. Further study is warranted to understand progression of sagittal imbalance with age.

Membrane technology has been applied to separate polysaccharides from Agaricus subrufescens (ASPs). The membrane-retained fractions and unfractionated preparations have been tested for in vitro immunological activity. Both the microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF1) membranes were able to separate high-molecular weight polysaccharides from fruiting body (ASP-FB) and submerge-fermented mycelium (ASP-SmF) extracts. All fractions showed immunostimulatory effects on RAW 264.7macrophages, measured by TNF-α, iNOs gene expression,and NO production. In contrast, antibody and proliferation levels in B lymphoblastoid SKW 6.4 cells were significantly increased after treatment with ASP-FB, but did not with ASP-SmF preparations. The ASPs- and LPS-induced stimulation could be differentiated by the finding that polymyxin B, a specific inhibitor of LPS, did not significantly affect the immunoactivating response and proliferation activity of ASPs on macrophages and B cells, respectively. Furthermore, the ASP-FB treatment was unable to induce IL-6 production by B cells unlike LPS activation, sustaining distinct signaling pathways for ASP-FB and LPS. The overall results provided additional information about the action of ASPs on the immune system and support the membrane method to separate and concentrate highmolecular weight ASPs for immunopharmacological and biotechnological applications.
