Mechanical buckling analysis of hybrid laminated composite plates under different boundary conditions

        Adim Belkacem,Hassaine Daouadji Tahar,Rabahi Abderrezak,Benhenni Mohamed Amine,Zidour Mohamed,Abbes Boussad 국제구조공학회 2018 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.66 No.6

In this paper, we study the Carbon/Glass hybrid laminated composite plates, where the buckling behavior is examined using an accurate and simple refined higher order shear deformation theory. This theory takes account the shear effect, where shear deformation and shear stresses will be considered in determination of critical buckling load under different boundary conditions. The most interesting feature of this new kind of hybrid laminated composite plates is that the possibility of varying components percentages, which allows us for a variety of plates with different materials combinations in order to overcome the most difficult obstacles faced in traditional laminated composite plates like (cost and strength). Numerical results of the present study are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and results of the first-order and the other higher-order theories issue from the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the buckling behavior of hybrid laminated composite plates and allows to industrials the possibility to adjust the component of this new kind of plates in the most efficient way (reducing time and cost) according to their specific needs.

      • Effects of thickness stretching in FGM plates using a quasi-3D higher order shear deformation theory

        Adim, Belkacem,Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine Techno-Press 2016 Advances in materials research Vol.5 No.4

In this paper, a higher order shear and normal deformation theory is presented for functionally graded material (FGM) plates. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending, shear and thickness stretching parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations for the present theory is reduced, significantly facilitating engineering analysis. Indeed, the number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only five, as opposed to six or even greater numbers in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a hyperbolic variation of ail displacements across the thickness and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. Equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and free vibration analysis are obtained for simply supported plates. The obtained results are compared with three-dimensional and quasi- three-dimensional solutions and those predicted by other plate theories. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded plates.

      • Theoretical analysis of composite beams under uniformly distributed load

        Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Adim, Belkacem Techno-Press 2016 Advances in materials research Vol.5 No.1

The bending problem of a functionally graded cantilever beam subjected to uniformly distributed load is investigated. The material properties of the functionally graded beam are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness, according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. First, the partial differential equation, which is satisfied by the stress functions for the axisymmetric deformation problem is derived. Then, stress functions are obtained by proper manipulation. A practical example is presented to show the application of the method.

Mechanical behaviour of FGM sandwich plates using a quasi-3D higher order shear and normal deformation theory

Tahar Hassaine Daouadji,Belkacem Adim 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.61 No.1

This paper presents an original hyperbolic (first present model) and parabolic (second present model) shear and normal deformation theory for the bending analysis to account for the effect of thickness stretching in functionally graded sandwich plates. Indeed, the number of unknown functions involved in these presents theories is only five, as opposed to six or even greater numbers in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a hyperbolic variation of ail displacements across the thickness and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. It is evident from the present analyses; the thickness stretching effect is more pronounced for thick plates and it needs to be taken into consideration in more physically realistic simulations. The numerical results are compared with 3D exact solution, quasi-3-dimensional solutions and with other higher-order shear deformation theories, and the superiority of the present theory can be noticed.

      • Bending analysis of an imperfect FGM plates under hygro-thermo-mechanical loading with analytical validation

        Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Adim, Belkacem,Benferhat, Rabia Techno-Press 2016 Advances in materials research Vol.5 No.1

Flexural bending analysis of perfect and imperfect functionally graded materials plates under hygro-thermo-mechanical loading are investigated in this present paper. Due to technical problems during FGM fabrication, porosities and micro-voids can be created inside FGM samples which may lead to the reduction in density and strength of materials. In this investigation, the FGM plates are assumed to have even and uneven distributions of porosities over the plate cross-section. The modified rule of mixture is used to approximate material properties of the FGM plates including the porosity volume fraction. In order the elastic coefficients, thermal coefficient and moisture expansion coefficient of the plate are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. The elastic foundation is modeled as two-parameter Pasternak foundation. The equilibrium equations are given and a number of examples are solved to illustrate bending response of Metal-Ceramic plates subjected to hygro-thermo-mechanical effects and resting on elastic foundations. The influences played by many parameters are investigated.

      • An analytical approach for buckling of functionally graded plates

        Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Adim, Belkacem Techno-Press 2016 Advances in materials research Vol.5 No.3

In this paper, an efficient and simple refined theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates. The theory, which has strong similarity with classical plate theory in many aspects, accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The mechanical properties of functionally graded material are assumed to vary according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Governing equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy. The closed-form solutions of rectangular plates are obtained. Comparison studies are performed to verify the validity of present results. The effects of loading conditions and variations of power of functionally graded material, modulus ratio, aspect ratio, and thickness ratio on the critical buckling load of functionally graded plates are investigated and discussed.

      • A novel higher order shear deformation theory based on the neutral surface concept of FGM plate under transverse load

        Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Benferhat, Rabia,Adim, Belkacem Techno-Press 2016 Advances in materials research Vol.5 No.2

The static analysis of the simply supported functionally graded plate under transverse load by using a new sinusoidal shear deformation theory based on the neutral surface concept is investigated analytically in the present paper. No transversal shear correction factors are needed because a correct representation of the transversal shearing strain is given. The mechanical properties of the FGM plate are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law formulation except Poisson's ratio, which is kept constant. The equilibrium and stability equations are derived by employing the principle of virtual work. Results are provided for thick to thin plates and for different values of the gradient index k, which subjected to sinusoidal or uniformly distributed lateral loads. The accuracy of the present results is verified by comparing it with finite element solution. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the displacements and stresses of functionally graded plates.

      • A high-order closed-form solution for interfacial stresses in externally sandwich FGM plated RC beams

        Chedad, Abdebasset,Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Abderezak, Rabahi,Belkacem, Adim,Abbes, Boussad,Rabia, Benferhat,Abbes, Fazilay Techno-Press 2017 Advances in materials research Vol.6 No.4

In this paper, an improved theoretical solution for interfacial stress analysis is presented for simply supported concrete beam bonded with a sandwich FGM plate. Interfacial stress analysis is presented for simply supported concrete beam bonded with a sandwich plate. This improved solution is intended for application to beams made of all kinds of materials bonded with a thin plate, while all existing solutions have been developed focusing on the strengthening of reinforced concrete beams, which allowed the omission of certain terms. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam. A numerical parametric study was performed for different simulated cases to assess the effect of several parameters. Numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters. The results of this study indicated that the FGM sandwich panel strengthening systems are effective in enhancing flexural behavior of the strengthened RC beams.

      • Bending analysis of an imperfect advanced composite plates resting on the elastic foundations

        Daouadji, Tahar Hassaine,Benferhat, Rabia,Adim, Belkacem Techno-Press 2016 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.5 No.3

A two new high-order shear deformation theory for bending analysis is presented for a simply supported, functionally graded plate with porosities resting on an elastic foundation. This porosities may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication, while material properties varying to a simple power-law distribution along the thickness direction. Unlike other theories, there are only four unknown functions involved, as compared to five in other shear deformation theories. The theories presented are variationally consistent and strongly similar to the classical plate theory in many aspects. It does not require the shear correction factor, and gives rise to the transverse shear stress variation so that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness to satisfy free surface conditions for the shear stress. It is established that the volume fraction of porosity significantly affect the mechanical behavior of thick function ally graded plates. The validity of the two new theories is shown by comparing the present results with other higher-order theories. The influence of material parameter, the volume fraction of porosity and the thickness ratio on the behavior mechanical P-FGM plate are represented by numerical examples.
