An Advanced ANN Model for Predicting the Rotational Behaviour of Semi-rigid Composite Joints in Fire Using the Back-Propagation Paradigm

        Khalifa S. Al-Jabri,M. Al-Alawi2 한국강구조학회 2010 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.10 No.4

This paper describes an artificial neural networking (ANN) model developed to predict the behaviour of semi-rigid composite joints at elevated temperature. Three different semi-rigid composite joints were selected, two flexible end-plates and one flush end-plate. Seventeen different parameters were selected as input parameters representing the geometrical and mechanical properties of the joints as well as the joint’s temperature and the applied loading, and used to model the rotational capacity of the joints with increasing temperatures. Data from experimental fire tests were used for training and testing the ANN model. Results from nine experimental fire tests were evaluated with a total of 280 experimental cases. The results showed that the R2 value for the training and testing sets were 0.998 and 0.97, respectively. This indicates that results from the ANN model compared well with the experimental results demonstrating the capability of the ANN simulation techniques in predicting the behaviour of semi-rigid composite joints in fire. The described model can be modified to study other important parameters that can have considerable effect on the behaviour of joints at elevated temperatures such as temperature gradient, axial restraints, etc.

The prevalence of radix molaris in the mandibular first molars of a Saudi subpopulation based on cone-beam computed tomography

        AL-Alawi, Hassan,Al-Nazhan, Saad,Al-Maflehi, Nassr,Aldosimani, Mazen A.,Zahid, Mohammed Nabil,Shihabi, Ghadeer N. The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2020 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.45 No.1

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of radix molaris (RM) (entomolaris and paramolaris) in the mandibular first permanent molars of a sample Saudi Arabian subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A total of 884 CBCT images of 427 male and 457 female Saudi citizens (age 16 to 70 years) were collected from the radiology department archives of 4 dental centers. A total of 450 CBCT images of 741 mature mandibular first molars that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. The images were viewed at high resolution by 3 examiners and were analyzed with Planmeca Romexis software (version 5.2). Results: Thirty-three (4.5%) mandibular first permanent molars had RM, mostly on the distal side. The incidence of radix entomolaris (EM) was 4.3%, while that of radix paramolaris was 0.3%. The RM roots had one canal and occurred more unilaterally. No significant difference in root configuration was found between males and females (p > 0.05). Types I and III EM root canal configurations were most common, while type B was the only RP configuration observed. Conclusions: The incidence of RM in the mandibular first molars of this Saudi subpopulation was 4.5%. Identification of the supernumerary root can avoid missing the canal associated with the root during root canal treatment.

Evaluation of the performance of encapsulated lifting system composting technology with a GORE(R) cover membrane: Physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis

        Mutaz Al-Alawi,Loubna El Fels,Ramadan Benjreid,Tamas Szegi,Mohamed Hafidi,Barbara Simon,Miklos Gulyas 대한환경공학회 2020 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.25 No.3

Composting is among the most effective integrated waste management strategies used to recycle sewage sludge (SS) waste and generate a useful product. An encapsulated lifting system is a relatively new industrial-scale composting technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of composting dewatered stabilized SS mixed with green waste using this new technology. The composting process was monitored by changes in the physico-chemical properties, UV-visible spectra, and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The composting temperature was steady in the thermophilic range for 24 and 12 d in the intensive and maturation phases, respectively, which fulfilled the disinfection requirement. Moreover, the temperature increased rapidly to 76.8°C within three days, and the thermophilic temperatures peaked twice and lasted longer than in traditional composting, which accelerated SS degradation and decreased the composting period necessary to obtain mature compost. FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed a diminished in methyl group derived from methylene C-H aliphatic groups because of organic matter degradation by microorganisms and an increased number of aromatic chains. The new technology may be a viable and sustainable alternative for SS management that converts waste into compost that is useful as a soil amendment.

      • Experimental performance investigation of compound parabolic cavity receiver having single absorber tube

        Omar Al-Nabhani,Saud Al-Kalbani,Azzam Al-Alawi,Afzal Husain Techno-Press 2022 Advances in energy research Vol.8 No.3

The current study presents experimental research on a parabolic trough collector with tube and cavity receivers. The primary concentrating parabolic reflector is designed for an aperture area of 2×2 m2 with mirror-polished stainless steel sheet reflectors. The cavity receiver consists of a compound parabolic secondary reflector and a copper tube. Both the conventional tube receiver and the cavity receiver tube are coated with black powder. The experiments are carried out to compare the efficiency of the cavity receiver with the tube receiver for fluid temperature rise, thermal efficiency, and overall losses. The experiments showed significantly higher fluid temperature rise and overall efficiency and lower thermal losses for the cavity receiver compared to the tube receiver within the parameters explored in this study.

Predicting the Behaviour of Semi-rigid Joints in Fire Using an Artificial Neural Network

        Khalifa S. Al-Jabri,Saleh M. Al-Alawi 한국강구조학회 2007 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.7 No.3

In this paper, we describe an artificial neural networking (ANN) model developed to predict the moment-rotation responseof semi-rigid beam-to-column joints at elevated temperature. Five types of beam-to-column joints, which represent typicaljoints used in construction, were modelled. Three flush end-plate bare-steel joints, one flexible end-plate bare-stel joint andtwo flexible end-plate composite joints were considered. The aplied moment and joint’s temperatures were used as inputeused for training and testing and validating the neural network models. The model’s predicted values were compared with actualtest results. The results indicate that the models can predict the momentrotationtemperature behaviour of semi-rigid beam-to-column joints with very high accuracy. The developed model can be modified easily to investigate other parameters thatinfluence the performance of joints in fire.

      • Red Seaweed (Hypnea Bryodies and Melanothamnus Somalensis) Extracts Counteracting Azoxymethane-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Waly, Mostafa Ibrahim,Al Alawi, Ahmed Ali,Al Marhoobi, Insaaf Mohammad,Rahman, Mohammad Shafiur Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.12

Background: Azoxymethane (AOM) is a well-known colon cancer-inducing agent in experimental animals via mechanisms that include oxidative stress in rat colon and liver tissue. Few studies have investigated AOM-induced oxidative stress in rat liver tissue. Red seaweeds of the genera Hypnea Bryodies and Melanothamnus Somalensis are rich in polyphenolic compounds that may suppress cancer through antioxidant properties, yet limited research has been carried out to investigate their anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant influence against AOM-induced oxidative stress in rat liver. Objective: This study aims to determine protective effects of red seaweed (Hypnea Bryodies and Melanothamnus Somalensis) extracts against AOM-induced hepatotoxicity and oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats received intraperitoneal injections of AOM, 15 mg/kg body weight, once a week for two consecutive weeks and then orally administered red seaweed (100 mg/kg body-weight) extracts for sixteen weeks. At the end of the experiment all animals were overnight fasted then sacrificed and blood and liver tissues were collected. Results: AOM treatment significantly decreased serum liver markers and induced hepatic oxidative stress as evidenced by increased liver tissue homogenate levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde, decreased total antioxidant capacity and glutathione, and inhibition of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase). Both red seaweed extracts abolished the AOM-associated oxidative stress and protected against liver injury as evidenced by increased serum levels of liver function markers. In addition, histological findings confirmed protective effects of the two red seaweed extracts against AOM-induced liver injury. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that red seaweed (Hypnea Bryodies and Melanothamnus Somalensis) extracts counteracted oxidative stress-induced hepatotoxicity in a rat model of colon cancer.

Prioritizing Service Supply-Chain Performance Measures Using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methodologies

Haidar ABBAS,Alamir Al ALAWI,Khadija Al MAKTOUMI 한국유통과학회 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.11

This study focuses on identifying and prioritizing the broader performance measures for the service supply chains by taking the case of Majan Electricity Company, Sohar, in the Sultanate of Oman. For an examination of the uniformity of ultimate objectives and the priorities therein, two strata of respondents with a total of fourteen respondents were approached for their valuable insights. Suitable structured instruments were personally administered to elicit the insightful and worthy responses. The two multi-criteria decision-making techniques, namely, the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process and the Best-Worst Method were used to reach a meaningful prioritization of the identified and refined broader performance measurement dimensions. The results show that there exists a minor gap between the two respondents’ groups in terms of their prioritizations. The major finding points to the difference in terms of the topmost priorities as revealed by the two set of respondents. For one group of respondents, the customer satisfaction matters the most, whereas for the other group, it is the overall profitability that matters the most. This gap against the utopian state assists in concluding that there is a requirement to reorient the employees so as to have a shared and common understanding of the organizational priorities.
