Effects of housing conditions on stress, depressive like behavior and sensory-motor performances of C57BL/6 mice

        İsmail Abidin,Hatice Keser,Elif Şahin,Hilal Öztürk,Harun Başoğlu,Ahmet Alver,Selcen Aydin-Abidin 한국실험동물학회 2024 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.40 No.1

Background: The effects of housing conditions on animal physiology, behavior or stress are still debated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of three different housing systems, individually ventilated cages (IVC), classical small cages with floor surface area of 500 cm2 (CC500) and classical large cages with floor surface area of 800 cm2 (CC800) on body weight, sensory-motor performances, depression-like behavior, plasma corticosterone and brain oxidative stress parameters in C57BL/6 mice. The mice housed in one of the cages from birth to 6 months of age. Hang wire and adhesive removal tests were performed to evaluate somatosensory and motor performances. The extent of depression was determined by the forced swim test. Blood corticosterone levels were measured. In addition, brain malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels were analyzed. Results: The depression-like behavior of the groups was similar. Although there were no significant differences in hang wire test among groups, CC500 group required longer durations in adhesive removal test. The body weight and plasma corticosterone levels of CC800 group were significantly higher than other groups. The oxidative stress parameters were highest in CC500 cage. Conclusions: Our study showed that the least stressful housing condition was IVC cage systems. Interestingly, the number of mice in the classical cages had a significant effect on stress levels and sensory-motor performance. Power and time turning: The capital, the state and the kampung in Jakarta

Abidin Kusno 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2015 도시과학국제저널 Vol.19 No.1

This paper seeks to show how a city such as Jakarta both shape and is shaped by three overlapping forces within which it is embedded. They are the creative destruction of capitalism, the violence of state categories in managing population, and the force of the vernacular environment or kampung in constituting the power of the city. Each force has its temporal rhythm with different cadences in chronological time. The interaction of these three forces constitutes a web of structure that shapes the power of the city. I end with an urban imagining of the current (city) government who works in the field of these three forces.

      • Empirical study on mobile satellite link using portable GPS receiver

Abidin, Wan Azilan W. Z.,Fujisaki, Kiyotaka,Tateiba, Mitsuo 통신위성우주산업연구회 2006 Joint Conference on Satellite Communications Vol.2006 No.-

In order to give a high quality mobile satellite (MS) services, it is of vital importance to tackle the issue of signal degradation due to factors such as multipath fading and shadowing effect. The advancement of the Global Positioning System(GPS) technology nowadays allows the commercially available, portable GPS receivers to be manipulated in the study of the MS link quality evaluation system. Apart from being low in cost, these receivers are simple to manage which will greatly reduce the time and cost of doing research. In this paper, the measurement methodology utilizing a portable GPS receiver used to extract important MS propagation parameters is explained and discussed. It describes in detail how the experiment was set up and how the measurement was conducted. We presented results obtained from the empirical data and made comparison between various MS environmental conditions that show the feasibility of using GPS in this research. The outcome of this research work will be used as part of a MS link evaluation system going to be developed based on raw propagation data obtained from portable the GPS receivers.

      • Second-Hand Smoke in Public Spaces: How Effective has Partial Smoke-Free Legislation Been in Malaysia?

Abidin, Emilia Zainal,Hashim, Zailina,Semple, Sean Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.11

Background: This study was performed to gather data on second-hand smoke (SHS) concentrations in a range of public venues following the implementation of partial Smoke-Free Legislation in Malaysia in 2004. Materials and Methods: $PM_{2.5}$ was measured as a marker of SHS levels in a total of 61 restaurants, entertainment centres, internet caf$\acute{e}$s and pubs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Results: Under the current smoke-free laws smoking was prohibited in 42 of the 61 premises. Active smoking was observed in nearly one-third (n=12) of these. For premises where smoking was prohibited and no active smoking observed, the mean (standard deviation) indoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentration was 33.4 (23.8) ${\mu}g/m^3$ compared to 187.1 (135.1) ${\mu}g/m^3$ in premises where smoking was observed The highest mean $PM_{2.5}$ was observed in pubs [361.5 (199.3) ${\mu}g/m^3$]. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of high levels of SHS across a range of hospitality venues, including about one-third of those where smoking is prohibited, despite 8 years of smoke-free legislation. Compliance with the legislation appeared to be particularly poor in entertainment centres and internet caf$\acute{e}$s. Workers and non-smoking patrons continue to be exposed to high concentrations of SHS within the hospitality industry in Malaysia and there is an urgent need for increased enforcement of existing legislation and consideration of more comprehensive laws to protect health.

New extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 66 and 68 from codes over Rk,m

        Abidin Kaya,Nesibe Tufekci 대한수학회 2017 대한수학회보 Vol.54 No.1

In this work, four circulant and quadratic double circulant (QDC) constructions are applied to the family of the rings $R_{k,m}$. Self-dual binary codes are obtained as the Gray images of self-dual QDC codes over $ R_{k,m}$. Extremal binary self-dual codes of length 64 are obtained as Gray images of $\lambda$-four circulant codes over $R_{2,1}$ and $R_{2,2}$. Extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 66 and 68 are constructed by applying extension theorems to the $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ and $R_{2,1}$ images of these codes. More precisely, 10 new codes of length 66 and 39 new codes of length 68 are discovered. The codes with these weight enumerators are constructed for the first time in literature. The results are tabulated.

Analysis of Bank Efficiency Between Conventional Banks and Regional Development Banks in Indonesia

Zaenal ABIDIN,R.Mahelan PRABANTARIKSO,Rhisya Ayu WARDHANI,Endri ENDRI 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.1

The research aims to analyze the level of efficiency by grouping banks during the period 2017 - 2018 into category 1 and category 2 banks and then dividing them as Regional Development Banks (BPD) and Non-BPD Conventional Commercial Banks (BUK) within each category. The research objects are banks within the categories BPD and BUK comprised 18 BPDs and 35 BUKs. The research methodology uses 3 stages, first, using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) we measure the level of bank efficiency; second, using the Tobit regression model we evaluate the effect of financial performance on DEA efficiency, and third, using the Mann-Whitney test we determine whether there is a difference in the efficiency of category 1 and 2 banks. The results showed that there was a decrease in the efficiency of category 1 and 2 banks but on average, the efficiency of category 1 banks is higher than category 2 banks. The estimation results of the Tobit regression model show that only the ROA variable affects the efficiency level of category 1 banks, while category 2 banks are influenced by NPL and ROA variables. In the Mann-Whitney test, it was proven that there were differences in efficiency between BUK and BPD in category 1 and 2 banks.
