        Soil contamination with heavy metal(loid)s has increasingly become a serious global environmental issue in recent years with considerable efforts made to remediate the contaminated soils. Interest in using biochar as a soil amendment is increasing because of its capacity to adsorb metal(loid)s and organic pollutants. This study investigated the effect of hairy vetch (HV) and poultry manure biochars (PMBC) (2% w/w) at 450 and 700℃ on the availability of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) to earthworms ( Eisenia fetida) in a highly contaminated As soil. The bioavailability of As and Cd to earthworms was determined bymortality and avoidance tests. Biochars reduced the extractable As and Cd by 45-89% in treated soils. Weight loss of worms was observed in all the treatments. The mortality percentage reduced by 70-80% in biochars compared to control. Biochars PMBC 700, and HVBC 450 greatly reduced the metal(loid) accumulation in worm tissues compared to control. In the avoidance test, earthworms preferred the low-temperature biochars compared to the high-temperature soils. The worms partially selected both the treatments when placed between the control and biochars which may be due to presence of metal(loid)s in biochars. The availability of metal(loid)s to earthworms varied between the biochars (feed stock and temperature), therefore, care must be taken during the selection of amendments to remediate contaminated soils.

        This study investigated the influence of organic amendments [vermicompost (5% w/w), and hairy vetch and poultry manure biochars (2% w/w) at two temperatures (450 and 700℃)] andred soil (RS-2% w/w) on the availability of arsenic (As) to radish plants ( Raphanus sativus), earthworms ( Eisenia fetida) and microorganisms in a highly contaminated As (1341.54 mg As kg.1) soil. The bioavailability of As to earthworms was determined by mortality test and to microorganisms by microbial biomass carbon (MBC) experiment. In the plant growth experiment, there was no significant difference in dry matter content among the biochars, vermicompost and red soil and also between biochars at different temperatures. Although the extractable As increased in all the treatments after the completion of the experiment, biochars, significantly reduced the uptake of As compared to the control. Poultry manure biochar decreased As at a higher rate when compared to hairy vetch biochar, and the reduction percentage was significantly higher at higher temperature. Red soil and vermicompost also reduced the availability of As to radish but the percentage of reduction was similar to hairy vetch biochar at 450℃. Also, red soil in combination with biochars reduced the availability of As but the percentage of reduction was similar to biochars at 450℃. At the end of the mortality experiment, weight loss of worms was observed in all the treatments. The mortality percentage in worms reduced by 70-80% in biochars and RS compared to control and vermicompost treatments. The HVBC 450 and PMBC 700 markedly reduced As accumulation in worm tissues compared to control, red soil and vermicompost treatments. Microbial activity varied between the treatments and higher MBC was noticed in soils treated with biochars at low temperatures. This study shows the effectiveness of biochar and red soil in the remediation of As.contaminated soils. Results may vary, depending on the types of biochar and its pyrolysis temperature. A field experiment is currently underway to confirm the results obtained from the glass house and laboratory studies.

        충격공진법을 이용한 콘크리트 슬래브 내의 개재물 검출

        콘크리트 비파괴검사법인 충격공진법의 유용성과 적용 한계를 살펴보기 위하여 실험 및 이론적 연구를 수행하였다. 실험적 연구를 위하여, 다양한 개재물이 포함된 콘크리트 슬래브 공시체를 제작한 후 충격공진법을 적용하여 개재물의 존재 및 매설 위치를 찾아보았다. 공시체들 중 몇 경우에는 개재물의 위치를 정확하게 검출할 수 있었으나, 나머지의 경우에는 검출하지 못하였다. 후자의 경우에 있어서 그 실패 원인을 규명하고, 나아가 본 기법의 유용성을 결정하는 주요 인자들을 알아보기 위하여 유한요소 해석을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 충격공진법의 물리적 이해 증진과 향후 발전에 기여할 것이다. The usefulness and limitations of the impact-resonance method, which is a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method for concrete, are studied by both experimental and theoretical methods. For the experimental study, several concrete slab specimens with various inclusions embedded were fabricated, and tested by the impact-resonance method. Some of the inclusions have been detected and accurately located, but some have not. The reasons for the failure in the latter cases have been investigated theoretically by using finite element analyses, from which the primary factors determining the success of the method have also been identified. This study will serve to enhance the understanding of the underlying physics and to improve the usefulness of the impact-resonance method as applied to concrete NDE.
