Ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) is used to improve the surface roughness and hardness and enhance the wear resistance of the material. The purpose of this study is to determine the adhesion properties of the surfaces of UNSM-treated steel to aluminum. To characterize the adhesion between the UNSM-treated surface and the aluminum, a wear test was conducted using the pin-on-disc method. Consequently, abrasive wear was evident in the UNSM-treated specimen and tested aluminum fin. However, on the aluminum pin surface worn against the non-UNSMed specimen, traces of the material being torn off were observed along with abrasive wear, indicating that some of the material of the aluminum pin was fused to the non-UNSMed surface during wear testing. EPMA revealed that a large amount of aluminum was present on the worn surface of the non-UNSMed specimen. However, only an extremely small amount of aluminum was observed in the UNSM-treated specimen. In conclusion, UNSM treatment was effective in preventing adhesion of the material in contact with aluminum because friction was reduced by the improved surface roughness resulting from the UNSM treatment.
