Objectives : The aim of this study was to examined the mediating role of empowerment in relations to job and organizational factors, and job satisfaction and organizational commitment in hospital organizations. Methods : Job variety, clarity, significance, and fitness were examined as the job factors, and security, reward justice, and organizational support as the organizational factors. Data were collected from 8 national university hospitals with 1,289 data points used for the final analysis. Results : All the job factors were found to positively influence empowerment, as were all the organizational factors, with the exception of reward justice . As hypothesized, empowerment had significant effects on both job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and was the most influential variable of all those examined. Conclusions : In the relations to job satisfaction, empowerment completely mediated job significance, security and organizational support, and partially mediated all other variables, with the exception of reward justice. In the relations to organizational commitment, empowerment completely mediated job variety and job fitness, and partially mediated all other variables, with the exception of reward justice. The theoretical and practical implications of these results have been discussed.

The objectives of this research are 1) to access different images held by three consumer groups (patients in university hospital, patients in corporation hospital, persons who are not currently visiting hospitals) on two types of hospitals(university hospitals and corporation hospitals), and 2) to investigate the personal factors affecting images of two types of hospitals. The data for this analysis were collected by questionnaire survey. A total of 403 interviews were conducted. Of these cases, 43 percent are male and 57 percent are female. The major statistical methods used for the analysis are paired t-test, factor analysis and multiple regression. The three consumer groups show a consensus that corporation hospitals are better than university hospitals in some aspects, such as kindness, facilities, and equipments. However, these groups disagree in certain images on two types of hospitals, such as popularity, credibility, and readiness for emergency. The images on two types of hospitals are varied by the respondents' sociodemographic characteristics such as age, sex, and by the type of hospital they are currently visiting.

Objectives: The research objective is to elucidate factors explaining why National university hospitals (NUH) are deficient in financial reporting compared to Private university hospitals (PUH). Methods: Six matching cases based on hospital region and bed size were selected from NUH and PUH. Financial and operating data for each hospital for 2002 were examined. The comparative method uses actual matched data. The deficient factors are derived from employee surveysand focus group interviews. Results: NUH have larger financial deficits (costs exceed revenue) in comparison with PUH. Personnel volume and structure is the biggest deficit factor in NUH, more so than personnel salary. The low revenue per patient also contributes to the deficit. In addition, some factors - such as tax effect after taxable corporation translation and implementation of public service - contribute to the deficit in NUH. However, disease severity of the patients is similar and does not account for the differences between NUH and PUH. Conclusion: Seven out of 13 factors are selected by employees of the hospitals to explain the deficits in NUH. The factors include personnel volume and structure, patient insurance type, and specific public affairs.

Objectives: This study is to identify the difference of hospital choice factors between internal and external customers at metropolitan and non-metropolitan hospitals. Methods: The questionnaires are used to collect data from internal customers(hospital employees) and external customers (patients). That is classified with 4 latent variables- such as, physical, human, accessibility, and connection factors. Total used cases are 98 patients and 96 employees on 2 hospitals-Hospital S, located in Seoul and 116 patients and 97 employees in Hospital C, located in non-metropolitan province. Multi group analysis and mean analysis in structural equation model (SEM) is used for analysis of difference between groups. Results: The hospital choice factors are different significantly between internal and external customers of Hospital C, while there is no gaps in Hospital S. And there is a gap of choice factor between external customers of Hospital S and Hospital C, but not between internal customers of the two hospitals. The internal customers in Hospital S have more accurate information about patient’s hospital choice factors than those in Hospital C. Specially, the internal customers in Hospital C are aware of that the human factor is more important choice factor than other factors. Conclusions: There are many hospital choice gaps between customers or hospital locations. So each hospital need to make more accurate measurement about customer need/behavior for higher customer satisfaction.
