        학술지 논문 영문 초록의 담화 구조와 언어 특징:EAP 교육을 위한 탐색

        The present study aimed to investigate some differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean researchers and international scholars and to provide Korean researchers with guidelines for writing accurate, self-contained, informative and coherent abstracts. To this end, intra- and inter-lingual analyses of English abstracts were carried out in terms of rhetorical structures, linguistic features, and disciplinary areas. The results reveal that (1) international and Korean researchers show some differences of rhetorical and discourse features in their English abstracts and (2) some types of errors in terms of grammatical-syntactic and lexico-semantic aspects are frequently committed by Korean researchers. The results of this investigation suggest that Korean researchers should be aware of common rhetorical structures and linguistic features of English abstracts and graduate students should be provided with EAP courses to practice writing English abstracts relevant to their major areas.

        초등학생을 위한 영어 체험 학습 프로그램 개발

        The exposure to English and the intensity of English class under the 7th English curriculum hardly enable students' communicative competence to meet the objectives of the curriculum. To compensate for the lack of exposure and intensity in English education, the present study aims to develop English experience learning programs for elementary school students, which can be applied as a supplementary program after school or during vacation. Some previous programs from throughout the country were analyzed and a questionnaire survey for teachers, students, parents and educational administrators was conducted to devise appropriate programs. The syllabus of the program was constructed from language-based activities and task-based activities. The fanner activities are based on situations and topics, and the latter consist of field trips and outdoor activities. Feedback from the application of the programs presented in the study will help improve them. Further research is needed for the development of programs for English teachers, which are required to increase the opportunity to use English and the understanding of English culture.

        서울 소재 문화재와 관광지 영어 설명문의 오류 분석

        According to the national English curriculum (MOE, 2015), the objectives of English language education in Korea include the development of English communicative competence, the understanding of foreign culture, and the introduction of the Korean culture to the world. These objectives require us to provide foreign tourists with the correct information on cultural properties and tourist sites available for visiting in Korea. The present study aimed to identify and classify common errors in English expository texts as seen on cultural properties and tourist sites, and to contribute to the improvement of the texts. The study analyzed 22 English texts on cultural properties and tourist sites located in Seoul. The results are as follows: First, 254 sentence-level errors were found while 21 discourse-level errors were identified. Second, 175 global errors were found whereas 100 local errors were found. Third, looking at the source of errors, 203 errors were found in the texts of cultural properties while 72 errors were from those of tourist sites and exhibitions. In conclusion, the expository texts on cultural properties and tourist sites for foreign tourists should be translated by translation specialists with a high level of English proficiency and a good knowledge of Korean history, culture, and tourist sites.

        초등영어 수업시수 확대가 학생들의 영어 성취도에 미치는 영향

        Primary schools in Korea have offered English classes once a week while the 5th and the 6th graders receive two classes per week. However, the instructional hours have been considered insufficient to improve students' communicative ability and satisfy their needs for English learning. Accordingly, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has piloted a new program that increases the instructional hours of primary school English classes for the 3rd to the 6th graders. Under the current system, the 3rd and the 4th graders take English classes. As part of the research on the program, the present study investigated whether instructional hours of English classes would be effective in terms of students' English achievement. The findings show that the students in the experimental group with increased instructional hours generally performed better on the English achievement test than their counterparts.

      • 상병증상 처리 분석에 관한 조사연구

        This study is an analysis of treatment of the symptoms of diseases. From August of 1970 to March of 1971, 70 persons who live in Poocheon-Koon, Kyeonggido, 79 persons who live in Pyeukje-Myeon, Kyeonggido, 93 patients who were admitted to the Ewha Woman's University Hospital and Wonjoo Union Christian Hospital in Kangwon province, and 70 persons who live in Dai-hyeon-Dong were surveyed by a few specially trained students of the College of Nursing of Ewha Woman's University. 1) Background Tatal number of the people surveyed was 312, of which 33.0% were men and 67.0% were women. With regard to age, the largest percentage of the people were in their thirties. The main occupation was farming-21.2% The education rate was ; graduated from primary school-43.9% The religion was ; none-55.8% 2) The various methods of treatment of the symptoms of diseases The first method of treating the symptoms was to go to the pharmacy and take some drugs-68.2% (of the total of 312). The second method of treating the symptoms was to go to the oriental pharmacy, take the drugs and be treated by accupuncture-43.7% (of 258 persons). The third method was to go to the hospital and be treated-50.6%. (of 158 persons). The fourth method was to use herb mediciam; 47.7% (of 88 persons). The fifth method was to go to an exorcism, or Divination-85.5% (of 62 persons). 3) About the cost of the various means of treatment The cost of using the Hospital; ₩ 1,677±309, Use of Pharmacy; ₩ 794±284, Use of Oriental Pharmacy; ₩971±294, Use of exorcism, divination; ₩ 2942±421, and lastly, the use of herb medicine; ₩ 1,922±361. 4) The kinds of diseases, which are commonly treated with folk-medicine The diseases, of type no. 9 (disease of degestive system) were 43.0% of the total cases, the second most common disease was type no. 8 (disease of respiratory system)-16.3%, and the third most common disease was type no. 6 (disease of neurosis and sensory organ) -12.2%. These are the three most common deseases of a total of 18. The contents of folk-medicine were herbs, animal intestines and general food eaten raw or boilde for a long time. 5) Others Most people like modern medicine -47.4% of the total survey, and the next most popular form of treatment was oriental medicine -36.2%, while other preferences equlled only -16.3%. Number of times the home was visited by public health nurses: often visited -32.1%, rarely visited-27.4%, never visited-13.8%, no response -27.0%. The reasons for the visit were health education -24.4%, Familly planning -18.6%, Vaccination done -18.6%, no response -39.8%. In conclusion, the important responsibilities of the clinical and public health nurses while working together with medical workers are the prevention of disease, case finding, patient teaching, nursing care of the patient, and follow-up care after discharge. In these various ways the public heaith workers, especially the clinical and public health nurses will contribute to the betterment of the health of the community people.

      • 초등학교 영어교육에서의 이야기 분석과 활용

        English educationin elementary school lays the foundation for the English education in middle school. The objective of primary English education is to keep primary pupils interested in English, motivatied and self-confident in English learning. This objective can be achieved through various methods, i.e., using storytelling, game, song, chant, rhyme, role play, etc. Of the many methods, storytelling is a very useful method in the primary English education. The present study summarised previous researches on the discourse analysis of English narratives including stories, the developmental process of children's discourse types, and the developmental process of children's narratives. Finally, it presented ways of using narratives or stories in the primary English education.
