초외생성 검정을 이용한 금융발전과 경제성장 간제어인과관계 분석: 아시아 5개국을 중심으로 / 논평 / 일반토론

그랜저 인과관계에 근거한 기존의 연구와는 달리 본 논문은 제어인과관계와 초외생성의 개념을 이용하여 금융발전과 경제성장 간의 인과관계를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 한국, 싱가포르, 말레이시아, 인도네시아, 태국 등 아시아 5개국 데이터를 이용하여 실증분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과 한국과 싱가포르의 경우에는 금융발전에서 경제성장으로 일방적인 인과관계가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 금융발전이 경제성장을 야기한다는 견해를 뒷받침하는 것이다. 한편 말레이시아의 경우에는 경제성장에서 금융발전으로 일방적인 인과관계가 존재하는 것으로 나타났으며, 인도네시아와 태국의 경우에는 금융발전과 경제성장 간에 양방향 인과관계가 존재하는 것으로 분석되었다. 결국 금융발전과 경제성장 간 인과관계의 방향은 아시아 5개국간에 서로 상이하다는 사실을 발견할 수 있었다. 금융발전과 경제성장 간 인과관계 방향에 대한 상이한 결과를 평가함에 있어서는 미시경제학적 분석이 요구되고 있으며, 이러한 점에서 금융발전과 경제성장 간의 관계에 대한 미시경제학적 접근은 앞으로 중요한 연구과제가 될 것이다. Unlike earlier empirical studies, all of which relied essentially on the Granger-causality test, this study utilizes the concepts of control causality and superexogeneity to examine the causality between financial development and economic growth in five Asian Countries; Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. I find that for the case of Korea and Singapore the financial development control causes the economic growth, providing empirical evidence supporting the view that ``financial development causes economic growth`` in these countries. In the case of Malaysia, on the other hand, I find that the economic growth control causes the financial development. For Indonesia and Thailand, mutual causality between financial development and growth is found. Therefore, overall finding as to the direction of the causal relationship in the finance-growth nexus from five Asian countries is mixed. In evaluating the mixed results for the causal direction in the linkage between financial development and economic growth, I realize that I am in need of the microeconomic analysis of the linkage between financial development and economic growth. In this regard, a clearly promising area of research is microeconomic analysis of the linkage between the financial development and economic growth.
