For the research of antifungal active constituents from natural products, 226 plants were extracted with ether and methanol, separately, and screened antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Penicillium avellaneum cells. The results demonstrated that 30 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 20 samples in methanol extracts against C. albicans. Against P. avellaneum, 19 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 11 samples in methanol extracts, respectively. The antifungal activity of natural products against C. albicans were showed more sensitive than P. avellaneum, and the polarity of the solvent was not specific in antifungal activity.
Vol.- No.-

The flower of Chrysanthemum morifolium L. has been used as 'Kamguk' in the Korean markets instead of it from C. indicum L. In order to evaluate the quality of Chrysanthemi Flos, the method for isolation and quantitative determination of luteolin as standard compound has been developed. It is analyzed with HPLC using the solvent system of MeOH-water-acetic acid (30:70:5). The amounts of luteolin from Chrysanthemi Flos in Korean markets are in the range of $0.03{\sim}0.04%.$ The amounts of luteolin from the flowers of C. indicum and C. boreale are approximately 0.14% and 0.04%, respectively.

For the search of anticancer compounds from natural products, 43 plants were extracted with benzene and methanol, separately, and the extracts were screened for the cytotoxicity against L1210 and HL60 cancer cell lines. From the results, 22 samples in benzene extracts showed cytotoxicity against L1210 cells and 23 samples against HL60 cells, respectively. However, any methanol extracts did not exhibit cytotoxicity against two cancer cell lines, it suggested that cytotoxic compounds seemed to have low polarity. $ED_{50}$ values less than $5\;{\mu}g/ml$ were observed in 14 and 9 samples in benzene extracts against L1210 and HL60 cancer cells, respectively.

Two constituents were isolated as the antibacterial principles from the methanolic extract of Crassirhizomae Rhizoma against Streptococcus mutans OMZ176 which is known to be a strong cariogenic bacterium. They were identified as flavaspidic acid PB and flavaspidic acid AB by means of physicochemical methods. They exhibited strong antibacterial activity and the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) value was 6.3mcg/ml

To develop anticariogenic agents, Scutellariae Radix was tested for its antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans OMZ176 which is known as a strong cariogenic bacterium. The antibacterial activity was evaluated with disk plate method and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The ethyl acetate fraction showed significant activity. By means of activity-guided fractionation, baicalein and ganhuangenin were isolated as the active principles. The MICs of these compounds were $100{\mu}g/ml$ and $200{\mu}g/ml$, respectively.

Forsythiae Fructus was studied on cytotoxic activities for the purpose of finding out active consituents against L1210 and HL60 cells. To isolate the active ones, the methanolic extract was partitioned into water insoluble and water soluble fractions. Furthermore, the water soluble fraction was fractionated into four parts, n-hexane, benzene, ethylacetate and water fractions. Among these, the water insoluble fraction showed the most potent cytotoxic activities on L1210 and HL60 cells in vitro. The water insoluble fraction was applied to silica gel column chromatography and divided into 5 fractions(fr. 1-5). The active constituents I and II were isolated from fr.2 and 3, respectively, by repeated silica gel column chromatography and recrystallization. The constituents were identified as 3beta-acetylbetulinic acid and betulinic acid by means of physicochemical data. The ED50 values of 3beta-acetylbetulinic acid and betulinic acid were 9.10 and 16.43mcg/ml against L1210 cells and 2.72 and 2.41mcg/ml against HL60 cells, respectively.

The extractability and stability of ginkgoflavonolglycosides under presence of several cellulose preparations were investigated. The enzymes used were macerosin, cellulose C and cellulase NC. The content variation of the glycosides was measured with HPLC method, using caffeic acid as an internal standard. The methanol extract of ginkgo leaf, containing the total flavonolglycosides of 4.46%, was used for the content comparison. By extraction with the enzymes, each or mixed, the peak levels of all the glycosides began to decrease after 1 or 2 hours. After 24 hour extraction, most of the glycosides were degraded to minor components. The flavonolglycosides in ginkgo leaf were also hydrolysed simply by the water extraction. After 24 hour extraction with water at 40oC, the peak levels of major glycosides were distinctly decreased. Rutin was hydrolysed by enzyme treatment or by ginkgo leaf itself. As a result, it was concluded that the commercially available cellulases and the ginkgo leaf itself contain the activities of beta-glycosidase and alpha-rhamnosidase. Kaempferol-3-0-(6''-O-p-coumaroylglucosyl)-rhamnoside and four other ginkgo flavonolglycosides were not hydrolysed under the same condition.
