Multi-dimensional interpolation method is developed and applied for a metal forming process which has irregular variable domain boundary and unstructured data positioning. Interpolation based on regular data positioning is relatively easy and well known. But formal distribution of given data is rare inreality. Copped with the problem which has irregular boundary and data position, variable domain is discretized with unstructured mesh and interpolation is performed using the relevant elements and proper shape functions. The proposed scheme can be generalized to n-dimensional problem such as multi-variable process design.

In this paper, a rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to simulating a ring rolling process. A warm or hot ring rolling process for a ball bearing outer race with profiled inner diameter and an automobile part with profiled outer diameter are studied by experiments and predictions. The predictions are compared with the experiments in terms of major dimensions, showing that they are quantitatively close to each other.
