Two stacks of 25 mm thick black locust boards were air-dried during summer in Daejeon. Boards were stacked with conventional stickers and moisture pallets made of plywoods and stickers. In early stage the drying rates of the moisture pallet stack were lower than those of the sticker stack. but after 90 days the moisture content difference between two stacks was only 0.8 %. It implies that the moisture pallet stacking is effective to reduce surface checking usually occurring at the beginning of drying. but unfortunately which hasn’t been proven with thin black locust boards of 25mm thick. Number of the boards with end checks in the sticker stack were twice as many as in the moisture pallet stack. Steady-state moisture diffusion coefficient of 15mm thick black locust boards were measured by vapormeter cup method and compared with those of white oak. Steady-state diffusion coefficient of black locust in radial direction is cose to that in tangential direction. while those values are. respectively, 1/7 and 1/4 of oak ’ s.

Liquid ammonia treatment known as the most effective Wood plasticization method, was applied to two typical domestic species, Pinus densiflora, Castanea crenata. Small specimens of 30mm width, 300mm length and two thicknesses, 5 or l0mm, were used. For 5mm thick Specimens, Pinus densiflora was quite well plasticized after 4 hour liquid ammonia treatment, while Castanea crenata was not plasticized even after 24 hour treatment. Specimens of l0mm thick Pinus densiflora were hardly plasticized, but those with kerfs were bent somewhat easily. With the increase of liquid ammonia treatment time the thermal conductivity of Pinus densiflora increased, while that of Castanea crenata didn't. Steaming has been used for bending wood for a long time, but the steam-bent wood is subject to spring-back and a relatively large radius of curvature. Liquid ammonia is known as an excellent wood plasticizer swelling both crystal and amorphous cellulose. Liquid ammonia technique for wood plasticization was developed and applied for bending alder and padauk pieces, which were used as parts of wooden furniture. The study confirmed that liquid ammonia bent wood can be used for various wood working design.<br/>

To make value-added products from small-diameter larch logs it is necessary to reduce the color variation between boards. The effect of heat treatment on the color variation was investigated. Four hundred air-dried larch squares were visually classified into six groups. The largest color difference index between them was 8.8. When they were kiln-dried lower than 120℃, their average color difference indexes decreased to less than 6.0 compared with the air-dried. However statistical analyses revealed that kiln-drying largely increased the variation of the indexes of the color elements. Heat-treatment above 150℃ increased the color difference indexes with the increase of temperature. The variation of color difference indexes within a group at 190℃ were less than the groups at 150℃ and 170℃. It implies that heat treatment at 190℃ could make the color of larch squares uniform.

Furniture ststistics in Korean households and consumer preference to furniture styles were surveyed by a direct visit method. Four major cities in this country were selected From each city two hundred housewives living in apartments were sampled. They were generally considered to represent the middle class of this country.<br/> Most furnitures in households had been purchased later than 1990. Only half of the respondents were satisfied with their furnitures. It was found that consumers primarily emphasized on furniture design when purchasing it. Aout half of the respondents were possessing solid-wood furniture and 15% wanted to buy it. Most respondents well recognized the use of built-in furniture and DIY furniture.<br/> <br/>

Three major domestic softwoods, Korean red pine, Korean pine and larch, were heat-treated at 220℃ and for various treatment times for color changing. A new heat treatment equipment was developed for this study and was revealed working well for changing the colors of the three softwoods. The color difference index of 15 was obtained after 8 hours for Korean red pine and Korean pine, and 10 hours for Larch. The correlations of brightness, redness and yellowness with treatment time were different between species.

One - inch thick keruing and radiata pine specimens were steamed at 120 ° C prior to drying to determine the effect of steaming on moisture diffusion in wood. Drying rate data, which were collected at four temperature levels, were used to calculate diffusion coefficients and activation energies. The diffusion coefficients of presteamed keruing were 1.4 to 2.0 times bigger than those of the untreated. while the diffusion coefficients of steamed radiata pine were about the same as those of the untreated. Presteaming decreased the activation energies of radiate pine. but unexpectedly increased those of keruing.
