An analysis of smartphone overuse recognition in terms of emotions using brainwaves and deep learning

        Kim, Seul-Kee,Kang, Hang-Bong Elsevier 2018 Neurocomputing Vol.275 No.-

Abstract

The overuse of smartphones is increasingly becoming a social problem. In this paper, we analyze smartphone overuse levels, according to emotion, by examining brainwaves and deep learning. We assessed the asymmetry power with respect to theta, alpha, beta, gamma, and total brainwave activity in 11 lobes. The deep belief network (DBN) was used as the deep learning method, along with k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and a support vector machine (SVM), to determine the smartphone addiction level. The risk group (13 subjects) and non-risk group (12 subjects) watched videos portraying the following concepts: relaxed, fear, joy, and sadness. We found that the risk group was more emotionally unstable than the non-risk group. In recognizing Fear, a clear difference appeared between the risk and non-risk group. The results showed that the gamma band was the most obviously different between the risk and non-risk groups. Moreover, we demonstrated that the measurements of activity in the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes were indicators of emotion recognition. Through the DBN, we confirmed that these measurements were more accurate in the non-risk group than they were in the risk group. The risk group had higher accuracy in low valence and arousal; on the other hand, the non-risk group had higher accuracy in high valence and arousal.

Highlights

The smartphone addiction risk group (13 subjects) and non-risk group (12 subjects) watched videos portraying the concepts of relaxed, fear, joy, and sadness.

The risk group was more emotionally unstable than the non-risk group in EEG. • Poster Session : PS 0666 ; Rheumatology ; The Effect of Urate-Lowering Therapy on the Radiographic Changes in Patients with Gout

( Seul Kee Lee ),( In Young Kim ),( Hye Min Jeong ),( Hyung Jin Kim ),( Jae Joon Lee ),( Hoon Suk Cha ),( Eun Mi Koh ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the radiographic changes in patients with gout in association with the control of serum uric acid level. Methods: Sixty one patients who had at least one erosive change on baseline radiography were included. Follow up radiography was taken at least 5 years apart from baseline radiograph. The primary endpoint was changes in the radiographic damage scores based on modifi ed Sharp/van der Heijde (mSvH) score in association with the control of serum uric acid level. Patients were divided by three groups which consist of improved, no change, aggravated patients for subgroup analysis. Results: The mean age was 55±13 years and 60 (98%) patients were male. Disease duration was 11±7 years and mean serum uric acid level was 8.8±1.9 mg/dL at baseline. Follow up duration between two radiographies was 10.8±3.6 years. All patients were receiving urate-lowering therapy. The change in the mean mSvH score between baseline and follow visit was not statistically signifi cant (6.77 vs. 6.69, respectively). The number of patient in improved, no change, aggravated groups was 22, 14, and 25 and the baseline plain radiographic damage score was 12.1, 4.85, and 3.7 respectively. As expected, the change in damage scores was positively correlated to AUC of uric acid level (r = 0.32, p=0.01). The patients with longer disease duration at baseline were more likely to have improvement in the follow up radiograph. (r = -0.46, p=0.004). In improved group, only the change of damage scores was negatively associated with disease duration at baseline (r = -0.48, p = 0.024). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that radiographic damage in gout may be reversible to some extent and that the magnitude of improvement depends on the degree of serum uric acid control.

Predictive factors for surgical outcome in anterior clinoidal meningiomas : Analysis of 59 consecutive surgically treated cases

        Kim, Ju-Hwi,Jang, Woo-Youl,Jung, Tae-Young,Kim, In-Young,Lee, Kyung-Hwa,Kang, Woo Dae,Kim, Seul-Kee,Moon, Kyung-Sub,Jung, Shin Williams & Wilkins Co 2017 Medicine Vol.96 No.15

Abstract

Despite the advances in the microsurgical technique and anatomical understanding of the anterior and middle skull base, anterior clinoidal meningiomas are still challenging lesions to resect completely and safely due to their intimate relationship with vital neurovascular structures. We report predictive factors for tumor recurrence and postoperative complications based on surgical outcome of patients with anterior clinoidal meningiomas treated at our institution.

Fifty-nine consecutive patients with anterior clinoidal meningioma who were surgically treated between March, 1993, and July, 2015, were reviewed retrospectively. For microsurgical tumor removal, orbitocranial or orbitozygomatic (78.0%), extended pterional (15.3%) and subfrontal approach (6.8%) were performed.

The median follow-up duration was 54.1 months. Gross total resection (GTR, Simpson's grade I or II) was achieved in 38 patients (64.4%). The overall recurrence rate (new lesion in GTR cases and re-growth in non-GTR cases) was 18.6%. GTR (Hazard ratio [HR] 0.014, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.001–0.256; P = .004), absence of internal feeder (HR 0.058, 95% CI 0.004–0.759; P = .030) and benign pathology (WHO grade I, HR 0.056, 95% CI 0.005–0.674; P = .023) were independent prognostic factors for recurrence-free. Fourteen patients (23.7%) developed permanent complications. The most common complication was cranial nerve injury (n = 6; 10.2%), followed by postoperative hemorrhage/infarction, hydrocephalus and infection. Larger size (≥ 40 mm) was significant as an independent predictive factor for permanent complication (HR 0.139, 95% CI 0.030–0.653; P = .012). Old age (≥60 years, P = .056) and peritumoral edema (thickness ≥ 5 mm, P = .303) did not reach statistical significance in multivariate analysis.

In surgical resection of anterior clinoidal meningiomas, various clinicoradiological factors were related with resection degree, complication, and progression rate. Although our results showed acceptable resection degree and morbidity, mortality, and recurrence rate, compared to the results of past, anterior clinoidal meningioma remain as neurosurgical challenges because of their close contact to critical vascular and neural structures.

Nanostructured Si/C Fibers as a Highly Reversible Anode Material for All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

        Kim, Kee-Bum,Dunlap, Nathan Arthur,Han, Sang Sub,Jeong, Je Jun,Kim, Seul Cham,Oh, Kyu Hwan,Lee, Se-Hee The Electrochemical Society 2018 Journal of the Electrochemical Society Vol.165 No.9

This study demonstrates the application of Si/C composite fibers as anode materials for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Using polyacrylonitrile as the carbon precursor, Si/C fibers were prepared through electrospinning and subsequent heat-treating processes. To investigate the correlation between fiber diameter and electrochemical performance, we prepared three electrodes (A, B, C), containing Si/C fibers with similar to 2 mu m, similar to 1 mu m and similar to 0.1 mu m diameters, respectively. Our results revealed that although the composition of all three electrodes was nearly the same, the Si/C fiber based electrodes exhibited better capacity retention when their fiber diameters were smaller. Normalized to the total mass of electrode composite, the solid-state half-cell prepared with the smallest diameter (similar to 0.1 mu m) Si/C fibers achieved a reversible specific capacity of similar to 700 mAh g(-1) (normalized to electrode mass) over 70 cycles. We believe that this report can serve as an informative approach toward the utilization of electrospun Si/C fibers as anode materials for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. • Enhanced Cancer Vaccination by In Situ Nanomicelle-Generating Dissolving Microneedles

        Kim, Nak Won,Kim, Sun-Young,Lee, Jung Eun,Yin, Yue,Lee, Jong Han,Lim, Su Yeon,Kim, E Seul,Duong, Huu Thuy Trang,Kim, Hong Kee,Kim, Sohyun,Kim, Jung-Eun,Lee, Doo Sung,Kim, Jaeyoon,Lee, Min Sang,Lim, Yo American Chemical Society 2018 ACS NANO Vol.12 No.10

Efficient delivery of tumor antigens and immunostimulatory adjuvants into lymph nodes is crucial for the maturation and activation of antigen-presenting cells (APCs), which subsequently induce adaptive antitumor immunity. A dissolving microneedle (MN) has been considered as an attractive method for transcutaneous immunization due to its superior ability to deliver vaccines through the stratum corneum in a minimally invasive manner. However, because dissolving MNs are mostly prepared using water-soluble sugars or polymers for their rapid dissolution in intradermal fluid after administration, they are often difficult to formulate with poorly water-soluble vaccine components. Here, we develop amphiphilic triblock copolymer-based dissolving MNs in situ that generate nanomicelles (NMCs) upon their dissolution after cutaneous application, which facilitate the efficient encapsulation of poorly water-soluble Toll-like receptor 7/8 agonist (R848) and the delivery of hydrophilic antigens. The sizes of NMCs range from 30 to 40 nm, which is suitable for the efficient delivery of R848 and antigens to lymph nodes and promotion of cellular uptake by APCs, minimizing systemic exposure of the R848. Application of MNs containing tumor model antigen (OVA) and R848 to the skin of EG7-OVA tumor-bearing mice induced a significant level of antigen-specific humoral and cellular immunity, resulting in significant antitumor activity.
[FIG OMISSION]

ORAL BIOLOGY RESEARCH : Original Article ; Altered bacterial adhesion with changes in roughness of titanium surfaces after implant cleaning

( Seul Kee Kim ),( Jae Kwan Lee ),( Se Hwan Park ),( Beom Seok Chang ),( Si Young Lee ),( Heung Sik Um ) 조선대학교 구강생물학연구소 2016 Oral Biology Research (Oral Biol Res) Vol.40 No.1

Although various instruments have been devised to treat peri-implantitis, none has become the technique of choice. Recently, a new implant cleaning bur was introduced. We compared the surface roughness and bacterial adhesion on implants after surface cleaning with various instruments. Two types of titanium disks - resorbable blasting media (RBM) and sandblasting with large grit and acid etching (SLA) - were used. Following treatments were administered: (1) no treatment; (2) tetracycline; (3) implant cleaning bur; (4) air polisher with glycine powder; and (5) copper alloy ultrasonic scaler tip. We measured the titanium surface roughness after cleaning. We also observed surface changes with scanning electron microscopy, and evaluated the bacterial adhesion related to changes in surface roughness. The surface roughness of RBM disks decreased significantly only in the third group. SLA disks in the third and fifth groups showed significantly decreased roughness. No significant difference in bacterial adhesion was found on treated RBM surfaces. The third and fifth groups also had significantly decreased bacterial adhesion on the SLA surfaces. The implant cleaning bur reduced the roughness of RBM and SLA titanium implants, and decreased the adhesion of bacteria on SLA surfaces, which may help prevent the recurrence of peri-implantitis.

      • Impact failure analysis of corrugated steel plate in LNG containment cargo system

        Kim, Myung-Sung,Kwon, Sun-Beom,Kim, Seul-Kee,Kim, Jeong-Hyeon,Lee, Jae-Myung Elsevier 2019 Journal of constructional steel research Vol.156 No.-

Abstract

In the present study, the failure characteristics of the primary barrier of a GTT Mark-III type liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo containment system (CCS) under cyclic impact loads were analyzed using a comprehensive failure model. The three types of failure modes that mainly occur in a thin-walled structure, namely, localized necking, ductile failure, and shear failure, were considered to evaluate the different failure phenomena for large and small corrugations of the primary barrier consisting of 304 L stainless steel. To validate the numerical analysis approach, a series of impact tests were conducted, and the reaction force history along with the permanently deformed configuration of the thin-walled structure was compared to the simulation results of structural impact failure. Through the comparative study, it was confirmed that the simulation outcomes were in good agreement with the experimental results. The proposed failure analysis model was used to quantitatively predict the structural impact failure of the primary barrier under severe impact (or sloshing) loads, and the estimated structural life was proposed based on the failure index concept.

Highlights

Failure prediction model for primary barrier of LNG CCS was proposed.

Localized necking, ductile failure and shear failure were adopted.

Reaction force profile and deformation shape of primary barrier were investigated.

Failure criteria contour of primary barrier was quantitatively evaluated.

The proposed model showed good agreement with experimental results.

Persistence of Genetically Modified Potatoes in the Field

        Kim, Chang-Gi,Kim, Do-Young,Moon, Ye-Seul,Kim, Hyo-Jeong,Kim, Dae-In,Chun, Young-Jin,Park, Kee-Woong,Jeong, Soon-Chun,Kim, Soo-Young,Kim, Hwan-Mook 한국식물학회 2010 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.53 No.6

Volunteers from genetically modified (GM) potatoes may pose an environmental problemif allowed to grow in the field after the annual crop is harvested. We tested whether they are more likely to produce volunteers than non-GM potatoes. Specifically, we compared the number of volunteers, number of tubers per plant, tuber size, and their vertical distribution in the soil. More volunteer plants came from non-GM potatoes than from GM potatoes, but the number and size of tubers were similar between the two. Vertical distribution of the tubers differed significantly, with most non-GM tubers being found in shallower soil (<2 cm deep). Our results suggest that spontaneous GM volunteers may emerge and produce tubers to a degree similar to that of the non-GM plants. No viable volunteers emerged from GM tubers in the next growing season, probably deterred by winter frost and a period of low soil temperatures (below $-2^{\circ}C$) at our study site. However, in regions with warmer climates, such GM volunteers may survive Winter and produce more plants the following year.
