The relationship between flow and happiness for volunteers of leisure service
( Se-hyuk Park ),( Soo-a Han ),( Seiyeong Park ) 한국체육학회 2016 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2016 No.1
Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between flow and happiness for volunteers in leisure service program. Method: Data were collected from volunteers (N=192) from 8 leisure service programs by using the convenience sampling technique in Seoul and Kyungki-Do, Korea. The leisure service programs were all provided by churches. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Results: Confirmatory factor analyses for flow construct revealed similar factor structures to those reported in previous sport and leisure research. Consistent with the elaborated model, volunteers`` happiness was predicted by flow subcomponents (challenge-skill balance, clear goal, concentration on task, sense of control, loss of self-consciousness, autotelic experience, and unambigous feedback). Findings also indicated that volunteers`` perceived happiness from volunteerism explain volunteers`` intention to continue volunteerism at the respective organization. It implies that volunteers`` perceived happiness from volunteerism and flow are antecedents of intention to continue volunteerism at the respective organization. Conclusions: A large literature documents positive physical and mental health consequences of volunteerism. However, previous research has never explored the construct of flow experience and its effects on happiness for volunteers. Thus, it is important to make volunteers enjoy volunteerism to experience flow and happiness. The findings of the current study may provide theoretical framework in managing volunteers in leisure service organizations.
