Background: The effectiveness of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, visible light, or infrared light therapy for the treatment of acne is the subject of ongoing scientific debate. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate changes in sebum production and the expression of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), following exposure of cultured human sebocytes to UVA radiation and light at wavelengths of 650 nm and 830 nm. Methods: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays were performed to measure the gene expression levels of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α), MMPs (MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-9), and AMPs (psoriasin, hBD-2, hBD-3, and LL-37) in cultured sebocytes after exposure to UVA radiation (2 J/cm2, 3 J/cm2, and 5 J/cm2) and light at wavelengths of 650 nm (14 J/cm2, 29 J/cm2, and 87 J/cm2) and 830 nm (5 J/cm2, 10 J/cm2, and 30 J/cm2). Expression of inflammatory cytokine proteins and sebum production were measured using enzyme- linked immunoassays and a lipid analysis kit, respectively. Results: Exposure of cultured sebocytes to UVA radiation and light at wavelengths of 650 nm and 830 nm did not show a significant increase in the expression of inflammatory cytokines, MMPs, or AMPs. Sebum production was not significantly decreased after exposure to UVA radiation and light at both wavelengths. Conclusion: We propose that UVA radiation, visible light, and infrared light can be used to target Propionibacterium acnes for the treatment of acne, without an increase in the expression of inflammatory biomarkers and sebum production. CaCl<sub>2</sub> 용융염에서 TiO<sub>2</sub> 펠렛의 전기화학적 환원반응 특성

본 연구에서는 $850^{\circ}C$의 $CaCl_2$ 용융염계에서 전해환원공정을 통해 $TiO_2$로부터 금속티타늄을 제조하였다. Ni-$TiO_2$ 조합전극을 환원전극으로 그라파이트를 산화전극으로 사용하였으며, 셀전위를 제어하면서 $TiO_2$의 전해환원 특성을 관찰하였다. XRD 분석을 통해 $TiO_2$가 $CaTiO_3$, $Ti_2O$, $Ti_6O$와 같은 다양한 반응 중간생성물을 거쳐 Ti 스폰지로 환원되는 것이 밝혀졌다. 또한 SEM 분석을 통해 $TiO_2$ 전해환원 반응동안 펠렛의 바깥표면부터 환원반응이 시작되어 펠렛중심으로 진행이 되는 것이 확인되었다. 전해환원 반응도중 환원된 티타늄금속은 초기에는 다공성 스폰지 구조를 보이나 고온에서 반응이 진행됨에 따라 점차 소결에 의해 수축되어 다공성 구조가 사라지는 현상을 보였다. A porous $TiO_2$ pellet was electrochemically converted to the metallic titanium by using a $CaCl_2$ molten salt system at $850^{\circ}C$. Ni-$TiO_2$ and graphite electrodes were used as cathode and anode, respectively. The electrochemical behaviour of $TiO_2$ pellet was determined by a constant voltage control electrolysis. Various reaction intermediates such as $CaTiO_3$, $Ti_2O$ and $Ti_6O$ were observed by XRD analysis during electrolysis of the pellet. Once $TiO_2$ pellet was converted to a porous metallic structure, the porous structure disappeared by sintering and shrinking with increasing the reaction time at high temperature.

N/A Background : Sensitive skin has been described as a skin type showing higher reactivity than normal skin and developing exaggerated reactions when exposed to internal stimulants and external irritants. The lactic acid sting test is widely accepted as a marker of sensitivity and employed for the selection of subjects experiencing invisible sensory irritation. Objective : To carry out an epidemiological study to assess the prevalence and possible related factors of sensitive skin in a regional population, and to examine the relationship between sensitive skin and subjective irritation using the lactic acid sting test. Methods : A total of 514 people responded to self-assessment questionnaires composed of questions about the self-perception, related factors, symptoms and signs of sensitive skin, We assessed subjective irritation using the lactic acid sting test in 54 volunteers. Results : The results are summarized as follows 1. The incidences of self-reported sensitive skin were 55.7% for woman, 38.9% for men and 51.0% for all responders. 2. The family history and seasonal variation of sensitive skin were significantly more common in sensitive skin group. 3. The face especially the cheek area was the most sensitive portion of body, cosmetics were common irritants. 4. The lactic acid stinging scores were significantly higher in the sensitive skin group. Conclusion : Our survey indicated that sensitive skin is a common problem for people and a complex problem with genetic, individual, environmental implications and the lactic acid sting test is a valuable method to define skin sensitivity.
Carrier frequency of SLC26A4 mutations causing inherited deafness in the Korean population

Purpose: The mutation of the SLC26A4 gene is the second most common cause of congenital hearing loss after GJB2 mutations. It has been identified as a major cause of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss associated with enlarged vestibular aqueduct and Pendred syndrome. Although most studies of SLC26A4 mutations have dealt with hearing-impaired patients, there are a few reports on the frequency of these mutations in the general population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of SLC26A4 mutations that cause inherited deafness in the general Korean population. Materials and Methods: We obtained blood samples from 144 Korean individuals with normal hearing. The samples were subjected to polymerase chain reaction to amplify the entire coding region of the SLC26A4 gene, followed by direct DNA sequencing. Results: Sequencing analysis of this gene identified 5 different variants (c.147C>G, c.225G>C, c.1723A>G, c.2168A>G, and c.2283A>G). The pathogenic mutation c.2168A>G (p.H723R) was identified in 1.39% (2/144) of the subjects with normal hearing. Conclusion: These data provide information about carrier frequency for SLC26A4 mutation-associated hearing loss and have important implications for genetic diagnostic testing for inherited deafness in the Korean population.
반하(Pinellia ternata)에서의 [6]-gingerol 함량과 멜라닌 저해 활성에 영향을 미치는 원산지 판별 마커로의 활용

반하(Pinellia ternata Breitenbach)는 천남성과(Araceae)의 약용식물로 동아시아 일대가 원산지이며, 유럽과 북아메리카 일부지역에도 널리 분포하고 있는 식물이다. 반하의 괴경(tuber)은 약재로 사용되어 구토, 염증, 외상을 치료하는 목적으로 사용되고 있다. 보고된 약리학적 작용으로는 항경련, 항종양, 살충, 세포독성 등이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 반하는 약리학적으로 유용한 약용식물로 잘 알려져 있음에도 불구하고, 원산지를 판별할 수 있는 신뢰성이 있고 표준화된 방법이 없는 실정이다. 이를 위한 한국산과 중국산 반하를 판별할 수 있는 유의적인 화합물을 탐색하기 위해 UPLC-PDA와 QTof-MS에 기반을 둔 대사체 표지법을 이용하였다. 한국산으로부터 원산지 판별 화합물로 예상되는 화합물을 반복적인 역상 칼럼크로마토그래피에 기반을 둔 활성유도 분획법을 통해 분리하였다. 그리고, NMR과 MS를 포함한 물리화학적, 분광학적 정보의 결과를 토대로 [6]- gingerol이라는 화합물의 구조를 동정하였다. [6]-gingerol은 원산지를 판별할 수 있는 능력과 melanin 생합성 저해 활성을 지닌 기능성 화장품 소재로서 가치가 있다고 판단되어짐에 따라 유효성분 원산지 판별 화합물로 Fingerprint법에 의해 선정되었다. 더욱이, 한국산과 중국산 반하 유래 [6]-gingerol의 함량 비교를 위해, 유효성이 검증된 분석법을 이용하여 이에 대한 검량곡선을 작성하여 그 함량을 비교하였다. 이것은 한국산 반하판별을 위한 화합물 선정과 성공적인 유효성 검증을 다룬 최초의 보고이다. Pinellia ternata Breitenbach, the natural medicinal plant of the Araceae family, is a perennial plant originated from the East Asia, but also widely distributed in Europe and North America. Its tuber is used as traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases such as vomiting, inflammation, and traumatic injury. Pharmacological studies revealed that P. ternata possesses anticonvulsant, anti-tumor, insecticidal, and cytotoxic activities. Despite being well-known as the useful medicinal plant, there is no reliable, standardized method for origin discrimination. Ultra performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector and quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry based metaboliteprofiling was applied to explore significant metabolite for origin discrimination between Korean and Chinese P. ternata. One compound was isolated from Korean P. ternata using repeated ODS column chromatography by bioactivity guided fractionation, and determined as [6]-gingerol according to the results of spectroscopic data including nuclear magnetic resonance and MS. This compound was selected as cosmeceutical biomarker by fingerprints, and it was associated to melanin inhibitory effect determining its origin authenticity. Furthermore, the calibration curve of biomarker was prepared using validated method for the comparison of content between Korean and Chinese P. ternata. This is the report to address the selection and successful validation of the discriminant metabolite for confirmation of Korean P. ternata.
