The purpose of this paper is to find the effective teaching method for English writing in Korean colleges. As the internet age has come, we need to write in English desperately to get more information and communicate with foreigners. Since 1945 there have been various approaches to teaching English writing, but most of them are for L₁ writing in America and England. From L₁ writing studies, some L₂ writing approaches were developed for L₂ writers, which are controlled composition approach, current-traditional rhetoric approach, the process approach and English for academic purpose. From the process approach and the author's teaching experience in English writing, she investigated the effective teaching method for college students on the basis of paragraph and essay level, writing process, communication, feedback, peer editing and writing evaluation.

The element of teaching English writing has been neglected in Korean classrooms. After the year 2000, however, research results involving L1 writing application have been applied to L2 writing curriculums. The result of the research uncovered two concepts; the writing process and communication. The introduction of creative writing in English poses numerous problems for the teachers. Such problem involves the students’ lack of grammatical knowledge. Therefore, a research experiment involving the enhancement of students’ syntactic maturity was conducted during the course of the second semester at a university in Korea. Using T-unit analysis, she measured and compared the students’ syntactic maturity. The results of the experiment prove that sentence combining practice is a very effective method for improving students’ syntactic maturity.
Qualitative Research for the Second Language Teachers

The researchers and second language teachers who try to find better ways of teaching have to know how to find the problems before solving them. Up to the present, most research method for second language teaching is the quantitative research over the world. However, the author thinks that this research method is not enough to understand the process of second language teaching. We have to find the other way of research to make up the quantitative research method.
