While the Web grows rapidly, many people, especially young people, use it for the purpose of information retrieval, exchange of information, game playing, etc. On the other hand, a lot of web sites are operated to provide educational material to those who are interested in it. There are also internet broadcasting service channels for education. Most of students using the Web are mainly interested in games and hobby-related information services, but not interested in sites providing educational information and study material. Therefore, it may be nice to provide them with edutainment(education+entertainment) material through the Web. Crossword puzzle problems may have such features, since it is a kind of games, and it provides chances to study a language. We present in this paper the study and implementation results of how to generate English crossword puzzle problems by computer programs. One of important topics in AI is CSP(Constraint Satisfaction Problem) to which the crossword puzzle problems are related. Since there are several constraints in the crossword puzzle, we need to study traditional methods how to represent the problems, what kinds of search algorithms are appropriate, and what kinds of heuristics are helpful. In this paper, we present the summary of traditional approaches to the problems, discuss the design issue, show the implementation of an English crossword puzzle problem generator in which frames are generated automatically with probability, and solutions for them are found. The solutions become eventually the crossword puzzle problems to the public. Several combinations of different models and different algorithms are discussed along with their results.
