Petrochemical piping usually carries out high flammable and explosible gas under high pressure and high temperature, so it always has a risk of being damaged and failed. When damaged is worried in pipe components such as T-section, it is usual practice to conduct the system stress analysis to check the high stress is probable cause of damage. In this study, system stress analysis was conducted under three conditions of a process piping system with two T-sections. i.e, design condition, steady operating condition and start-up process condition. Since some damage was detected in a T-section, it should be confirmed that the cause of the damage is high system stress caused by thermal distortion of the piping. Results show that the cause of the damage cannot be the system stress but the other causes such as material defect or improper internal process fluid. Advantages and disadvantages of the system stress analysis method for root cause analysis are also discussed.
