From the soteriological point of view, early Buddhist concept of nirv??a contains many ambiguities. Early Buddhism cannot give clear answers on such questions as how we can reach nirv??a and what kinds of state nirv??a is. Within the early Buddhist canon, reaching nirv??a is explained through diverse ways with different cultural, religious, and philosophical background. In fact, we can hardly see any clear clarification of the state of nirv??a, except occasional silence and metaphor within the early Buddhist canon. This essay will deal with the way to reach liberation, or salvation, through the concept of nirv??a with a remainder of clinging (sopadhi?e?anirv??a). Among the diverse ways to reach nirv??a suggested in the early canon, it will discuss the way of asceticism, the way of wisdom, and the way of meditation from the different cultural religious and philosophical point of view. If possible, it will try to identify among the most Buddhist way to reach nirv??a and how it is related to the concept of nirv??a with a remainder of clinging. In addition, it will also deal with the state of nirv??a in terms of nirv??a withouot a remainder of clinging (anupadhi?e?anirv??a). Although the early canon does not really give a clear answer, yet gives a clue to deduce how this state can be understood originally. In fact the later sectarian Buddhist schools, excluding the Sautr?ntikas, seem to accept the idea that the state of Tath?gata after death cannot be regarded as mere non-existence. It will trace how the negative and nihilistic concept of nirv??a became positive and optimistic existent within the Sarv?stiv?dins, the Therav?dins.
Mahakapi Jataka의 변천- 동물우화에서 인간적 합리적 이야기로-
황순일 ( Soon Il Hwang ) 인도철학회 2013 印度哲學 Vol.0 No.38
From the remaining stone reliefs in Barhut and Sanchi as well as a mural painting survived in the cave 17 in Ajanta, the Mahakapijataka seems to have been very popu-lar among Indian Buddhists from the 1st century BCE to the 3rd or 4th century CE. The story of this great monkey king has been preserved in the Jataka in the Pali canon in-cluding the exegetical explanation from the Theravada Buddhist perspective. Fortunately, this story was also adapted as an elaborate and polished morality tale, stylis-tically similar to the Pancatantra and the Hitopadesa in Hindu tradition, by Arya Sura in his Jatakamala. This col-lection of Buddhist morality tales becomes popular later both in Tibet and in Mongolia as well. In this paper, I am going to analyze the similarities and differences between the three different versions: the verses in the Pali Jataka, the core of the story, the Theravada exe-getical explanation, popular in Southern Buddhism, and the Arya Sura`s stylistic adaptation, spreading around Northern India, Tibet and Mongolia. In this process I hope to show how the simple storyline focusing on leadership and self-sacrifice becomes complex religious and morality tales appeared in the Theravada exegetical tradition and the Arya Sura`s Jatakamala.
특집 : 범어 원전의 개발과 읽기 ; 비구(比丘)와 필추(苾芻)를 둘러싼 빨리어와 범어의 다양한 뉘앙스
황순일 ( Soon Il Hwang ) 인도철학회 2010 印度哲學 Vol.0 No.30
Within the Chinese translation of the Indian Buddhist texts, there are two different sound readings of the word bhikhu in GandharI, bhikkhu in Pali and bhiksu in Sanskrit. They are bigu(比丘) and pilchu(苾芻) in Korean pronunciation. While the former was usually appeared in the old translation of the Buddhist texts, the letter was wide spread within the new translation after Xuanzang, one of the most famous translators in the history of Buddhism. This difference can be explained through the assumption that Buddhist texts written in Prakrit languages transmitted into China during the early period, while Buddhist texts written in Sanskrit transmitted into China later period. In terms of Korean pronunciation, the word bigu(比丘) sounds like bhikhu in GandharI, whereas the word pilchu(苾芻) sounds like bhiksu in Sanskrit. Thus the letter replaced the former during the time of Xuanzang in China. While Chinese languages are known as ideograms and isolating language, Indic languages are known as phonograms and inflectional language. Which means there are inflections in the end of the words in Indic language. Through the delicate changes in inflections and word forms, we can access to the hidden nuances in the Indian Buddhist texts written in Indic languages. We can see some cases in the use of the plural vocative. In Pali, it preserves the frozen phonetic of bhikkhave in the Eastern Prakrit in order to show the Pali canon is the word of the Buddha. In the Abhidharmakosabhasya, Vasuabandhu seems to have a fun to use both bhiksavan in Sanskrit and bhikso Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit.
