중국 로컬자동차의 기술혁신에 관한 연구: 치루이, 지리, 창청의 엔진개발을 중심으로

본 연구는 중국 자동차산업의 발전을 기술혁신의 측면에서 분석한다. 중국 로컬자동차의 엔진개발 사례와 엔진관련 특허 내용을 조사한 결과 기술추종형 추격은 명확히 발생하고 있으나, 자체 기술의 개발 능력은 아직 부족하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 치루이의 경우 분석 대상 3개 사 가운데 가장 먼저 기술추격을 시작하였으나, 2002년 이후 뚜렷한 기술발전을 보이지 못하였다. 다만 특허 측면에서 가장 많은 특허 수량을 보유하였고, 타사에 비해 엔진 분야에서의 경쟁력도 있었다. 지리와 창청은 2000년대 중반부터 기술추격에 나섰는데, 역엔지니어링 방식으로 도요타의 구식 엔진을 개량한 모델을 선보였다. 지리의 경우 그 과정에서 저비용 혁신의 사례를 보여주기도 하였다. 두회사 모두 글로벌 브랜드에 비해 크게 뒤처지지 않는 엔진을 개발하였으나, 핵심 부품은 글로벌 부품업체를 통해 조달하였고, 이들의 도움이 없었다면 현재의 제품을 생산하는데 어려웠을 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 중국 로컬자동차 산업은 기술추종형 추격이 이루어지고는 있으나, 단기적으로 외부기술의 내부화에 따른 단계생략형 추격이 발생하기는 쉽지 않을 전망이다. This paper tried to analyze Chinese auto industry in the perspective of technology innovation by investigating the cases of engine developing processes and the patent contents on the engines. Local auto makers performed obviously technological following catchup processes especially in their engine developing projects; however they have not reached to creative imitation using their own technology. Chery, as a first moving local brand to catchup global makers, has not performed successfully for developing their second generation engines comparing to early 2000s when starting reverse engineering with the help of global company; however fortunately Chery has possess relatively a lot of patents especially belonging to engines comparing to other companies. Geely and Greatwall started to technological catchup at mid-2000s and made their own engines from copying outdated engines of Toyota by reverse engineering processes. They tried to add effective technologies into the regenerated engines by helping of global auto parts makers not their own technologies. So the technological followingcatchup have performed in the Chinse auto industry, however, the leapfrogging catchup would not be expected to accompany in the near future.
