Recently, the design of indoor rest zones at a department store is changing a lot. Different colors, finishing materials, effective production of lighting, introduction of natural elements, interesting furniture arrangement, and use of VMD not only give a pleasant and natural indoor atmosphere to the rest zones but also provide various services. In this respect, this study aims to analyze how the spatial design characteristics of indoor rest zones at department stores appear and address problems. As a result of analysis based on case research, first, it is necessary to make good use of Viod part at department stores. Second, most of the rest zones at department stores should be designed differently from retail spaces to improve territoriality and cognitivity of space. Third, differentiated and friendly space planning should be made because rest zones at department stores are not differentiated from the finishing materials, color, and lighting elements. Fourth, it is necessary to consider various designs for the furniture placed in rest zones. Fifth, when introducing natural elements to the rest zones, various natural elements such as tree, water, stone, earth, etc should be introduced in a harmonious way.

Following many changes in consumption behavior or needs of modern people, department stores have not only the role of distribution but also have spaces where people can sit down to have conversations, wait and collect information. Therefore, a careful planning for users to conveniently use rest spaces within department stores is required. In this study, theoretical parts on resting spaces in department stores had been looked to analyze arrangement characteristics. Among rest spaces of department stores, characteristics of arrangement of entrances, hallways, side of escalators, elevator halls, and powder rooms are analyzed to have the purpose of suggesting development plans. The results of analysis in this study are as follows: First, horizontal arrangement types of resting spaces in the department store are showed with complex types in most cases. Second, vertical arrangement types of rest spaces are a separated type and mixed type. Third, there are a variety of plan types compared to existing space. Particularly, rest spaces are placed to access conveniently such as elevators and escalators hall rather than independent rest space.

Recently, the spatial design of resting spaces in department stores has been changed. The design elements such as colors, materials lighting, natural elements, furniture arrangement, and VMD are not only providing a pleasant and natural indoor atmosphere in resting spaces but also providing various services to customers. In this study, it aims to analyze how the spatial design characteristics of resting spaces in department stores are appeared. The results are as follow. First, the spatial characteristics of the resting spaces in department sores came up as five factors; accessibility, recognition, comfort, convenience, and esthetics. As the result, the accessibility is the most important factor in resting spaces. Second, the resting spaces was well located near by the elevators and escalators providing easy accessibility to customers to floor, Third, the resting spaces need to improve the spatial design for emphasizing the recognitions by using colors, materials and lighting. Fourth, the resting spaces were provided different atmosphere by their location. Fifth, the various forms of furniture, curved. zigzagged, and cubed, were placed in the resting spaces for comport use. Sixth, the aesthetic was the least important factor of all. To improve this problem, the resting spaces need to provide cultural contents by installing art pieces, moving picture facilities, and VMD. Seven, most of the resting spaces had similar floor plan type that they did not perform their role successfully. The resting spaces need to provide both individual rooms and unique open spaces for giving a choice to use when customers visit them.

Subway stations in Seoul play fundamental roles since they offer easy accessibility to major tourist attractions from beginning to end of travel for foreign tourists. And yet, it is hard to find the ways for them in subways because present subway stations have high pedestrian density and complex spatial structure, and they are situated in the underground. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a guideline to be used in the design for subway stations by exploring preceding studies and literature and, through field study, by finding out the behavioral characteristics shown in the paths to destinations of subways users. The results from the investigation and analysis are as follows; First, the failure to subway way-finding mainly stems from the long pedestrian passage, the frequent changes of direction, inadequacy of signage, and the similarity and complexity of perceived environmental information. Second, it turned out that psychological reactions of users after the failure of subway wayfinding are workings of defense mechanisms such as anger, confusion, resignation and fear, which even lead to the avoidance of the space itself or visit to the space. To improve this situation, this study suggests placement of sufficient helping guides and improvement of spatial structure to reduce crowdedness and emphasizes the importance of signage development which complements visibility and attention. Third, unlike those in Japanese subways, current designs of guidance signs in subway of Seoul don"t have unified positions of arrows, sizes of letters and typefaces. Thus, even in the subway stations of a same line, there are different designs of guidance signs, for which reason, it takes a long time to convey necessary information to the subway users and, what is worse, those designs make users feel confused. Therefore, it is recommended that, to address the problems arising out of non-unified designs, the signage system for all subway stations should be modified and complemented by standardization of designs with production of manual for the unity of designs and marking methods.

While we are entering the aging society, demands of silver town with dwelling facilities, recreational facilities and medical facilities are increased. Also, unlike the past, health and leisure of the aged are emphasized and those leisure facilities are increased in silver town of modern times. The purposes of this research are to analyze problems of common space"s color of urban silver town for the aged and suggest improvements of common space"s color plan of facilities for the aged by them. Floor, wall, ceiling, baseboard, handrail, sign material, etc. were measured for common spaces, lobby, corridor, restaurant, multipurpose room and library. Measured value was converted to RGB color with Chooser3.0 of Pantone and it was recorded by Munsell value by using Munsell Conversion. As the results of research, proper color plan is conducted by spatial purposes in common space of silver town and there was few cold colors the aged cannot recognize while warm colors were generally used. And, boundary among the strings is appeared well, so it was analyzed positively. But, most of facilities showed uniformed color plan. Therefore, studies on the alternatives improving various colors and cognitive ability by considering characteristics of the aged should be necessary.
