The purpose of the study focused on the water quality and pollutant source, and the proposal of solution to the problem predicted and data base in the water supply plan in future. The study was investigated and surveyed from January, 1987 to December, 1988 through the field study. The results were as follows ; 1) The main pollution source of the Kum river is a municipal sewage of Tae-jeon, Chong-ju region. The main pollutants of municipal sewage is caused by the nightsoil of mankind and livestook. 2) Of the pollutant generated, livestock contributed 43.7% as BOD, 74% as SS and mankind served 16.6% as BOD, 37.6% as SS. 3) Trend of pollution for the recent five years in Kum river was decreased at tributary stream such as K.3 and K.5 sites because of extended treatment facilities. But the main stream trended to increase due to the effluent reduction of Tae-chong Dam. 4) The average concentration of BOD_5 and COD of the Kum river as a broad water supply source was each 4.9㎎/L and 5.1㎎/L, E.Coli was 4.8×1000MPN which was corresponded to the third grade of water quality in the light of the criteria. 5) In order to eliminate the ammonia and practice the disinfection, excessive injection of chloride gas is dangerous to produce the THM by the inert organics for 2-3 days. 6) As a alternative plan to solve the problem of Chon-ju water supply, multipurpose Dam need to constructed at site(Yong-dam Myon) which has a good quality and a plenty of water. 7) In the case of use the water of the Kum river, it is recommended to a partial treatment physico-chemically at intake water plant, or the raw water of the Kum river will required to purify the water completely at water treatment plant of Chon-ju.
