The main purpose of this study is to explain major characteristics of foreign bank branches in Korea and to further analyze any changes of their activities due to the recent abolishment of preferential banking policies for them. To understand the recent business activities of foreign bank branches in Korea, this study performed two analyses; (1) financial statement analysis in comparison to those of domestic commercial banks and (2) an analysis of different features and aspects among foreign bank branches by nation of origin for more objective understanding of their business activities. The findings from both analyses confirmed that there are common characteristics of high profitability compared to domestic commercial banks and some unique differences of the banking activities by the nation of origin as well. The differences in banking activities by nation of origin seem to decrease while differences in those within the subgroups tend to increase according to the different strategies of each bank.
